Merthyr Mawr National Nature Reserve, Merthyr Mawr, Nr Bridgend, South Wales

This lovely sand dune nature reserve was once joined to Kenfig National Nature Reserve, and a continuous belt of sand and dune systems ran all the way along the coast from the Ogmore estuary as far west as the Gower Peninsula. There are interruptions to the beaches now , but Wales still has large and relatively unspoilt coastal and sand dune habitats, which are home to many fascinating plants, insects and birds.

The sand dunes here are unusual ,because they have formed against a Carboniferous Limestone Plateau that runs from East to West along the coast, making the dunes at Merthyr Mawr the second highest in Europe. The reserve also contains examples of the successional stages of dune formation, from bare sand, embryonic dunes to (further inland) stabilised dunes and slacks.

The site is managed by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), and it is designated as a SSSI because of its wealth of plants and insect life. It is also well known as a place where some nationally rare and unusual fungi species grow

Posted for: Smile on Saturday

I'm smiling from ear to ear with this one. We have three Hydrangeas in the garden. Two were there when we bought the house and one we introduced. We have not had flowers in all that time .... until now, five year later!

Hydrangea is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Japan, and Korea

We have no idea what colour this will burst into and given it's embryonic status, all buds are still green, a very pale green offering us no clue.

This little beauty will be a proud entry in my '100 Flowers 2017' collection when it plucks up enough courage to discard its hesitancy and reveal itself with all its wonder.

Have a great day everyone :)

The Embryo sim keeps pulling me back for more photography. The quality of the build is just so lovely--love this steampunk waterwindtower. It made me want to rust the sky :)

What... you don't scan your face at 1am because you can't sleep? Psshaw!

I've seen this done but never tried it so here's my take on a faboo alternative to image making. I must admit it tips the fun scale a smidge and I'm sure you will see more of these as I weave my way though this 366 project. I welcome you to stick your head in the scanner too - guaranteed giggles!

A few of my outtakes looked rather embryonic.. there is something haunting, ethereal, perhaps vaporous about how these turn out and I like it.

I'm looking forward to this 366 journey with those of you who are taking a jab at it. It's my first one after 5 years of being on the Flick :)

Echoes by Pink Floyd "Thank you Yvonne"

Say no word...

Silence is golden… at times!

The miracle of a soulful dusk

echoes in the far-away distance.

The pleasure of an un-deviate paradise

echoes in the green meadows.

The sweetness of an embryonic moment

echoes in soft clouds and translucent fog.

The gentle chill of a buoyant joy,

echoes in a whisper, deep in my soul.

Say no word…

Silence is golden… at times!

Embryonic Journey

So exciting news! I get to make luffly images for the Zibska brand OFFICIALLY! (Yay me!)

Of course I was all chair dancing and HAD to make an image straight away!

I love serendipity in second life and this is a theme that has been a thread in my art even in my first one! My favourite medium to work with has always been the found object - and boy what an object did I find!

Post processing:

Lately I've been feeling a distinct lack of excitement at the prospect of my usual post processing MO, having largely been bored with it.

Traditionally, I consider myself the king of procastication, taking it to the dizzying heights of it actually being an art. But as always, every once in a while, I break the bounds of the procastination-ridden reality and wake up to find myself motivated to try something else. There's generally a catalyst in these cases and in this specific case, it has been Moim Hossain and Jimmy Mcintyre.

I finally had the chance to take a look at the prospect of working with a single image and the ever rewarding Luminescence Masks in Photoshop (taught by Jimmy's tutorials and egged on by Moim Hossain).

Well, this here is the end result. Looks a tad overdone, but my skills in this area are still in an embryonic stage, so I can be excused ;)

OK... since a few of you have wondered what this is... it made me think of a blastocyst or some such early embryonic structure: cells dividing and growing. Alas, my macro lens is not quite that good.

These are gel beads that you immerse in water to let them hydrate and swell to a spherical shape, and they're meant to be used to keep cut flowers moist and fresh. This is a glass bowl filled with the gel beads and water (the water makes the flat connections between the spherical shapes) and I used a flash and diffuser below the bowl to light it.

An embryo would have been cooler...

i pass a lot of weathered barns in the course of my day, but none have this beautiful gradation of red. that's some very defiant paint up there. it astonishes me every time because it seems to be the result of light, but it's not. (and i think the blur is another manifestation of my insecurities...it comforts me, like a visual embryonic fluid.)

The pupil is the sphere that is located in the center of the iris of the eye and that controls the amount of light that enters the eye. It appears black because most of the light entering the pupil is absorbed by the tissues inside the eye. In optical terms, the anatomical pupil is the eye's aperture and the iris is the aperture stop. The image of the pupil as seen from outside the eye is the entrance pupil, which does not exactly correspond to the location and size of the physical pupil because it is magnified by the cornea. On the inner edge lies a prominent structure, the collarette, marking the junction of the embryonic pupillary membrane covering the embryonic pupil.

I've always had an interest in exploring this idea of identity in a medium such as second life - this theme of uniformity and the homogenic is a fascinating one.

PERSONAL DICTIONARY

PARADISE exists and is personal. The map is within each one of us. It is essential to study hard in order to locate and understand its reading. No one will ever give us this map. Other minds can only help us with our study, because alone, our mind will go nowhere. To be able to reach it, we have to pay the price, passing through storms and deserts. We can choose not to reach it, but the end result is the existence of small islands of joy in the midst of vast oceans of emptiness.

FULL FREEDOM can only be experienced from at the moment we stop harming the Planet where we are and respect the uniqueness of each form of manifested life. It requires breaking from ignorance and developing the highest level of ethics. Live and let live, live together, learn and teach, if it is not possible to live together, move, and if your space is invaded, warn the intruder, if they don't understand, "bite". True freedom only applies to the absolute break from ignorance, including within the heart.

FULL HAPPINESS is only possible when the whole is in equilibrium and harmonized. Without internal harmony and all that surrounds us, happiness is an illusion, just a personal wellbeing confused with happiness and poor durability. There is no formula; each must discover the path, your own formula.

LIFE is the Manifested Universal Intelligence; an indescribable beauty, dynamic, in constant transformation and creation process. We must have unconditional love for life to be within its flow, and thus also to create, build and transform (love unconditionally, regardless of what others think; make it independent of your mistakes and successes in the process of growth).

EVIL-evil does not exist as a source; evil is a product of ignorance.

COSMIC LAWS-The cosmic laws exist; it is not a question of belief but a fact. According to the progress of our evolutionary journey, we are discovering, experiencing and testing each law, to finally reach our free will in harmony with each discovered law; but to achieve perfection, which is the perfect balance in ourselves, each one of us has to discover it in our own way, because we are singular stars. When we get it, we come into beautiful harmonization with the network of life, each of us performing our part for the perfect "functioning" of the cosmic Web, before all that, without exception, LIGHT and DARKNESS, PAIN and LOVE, WILL BE OUR MASTERS with EQUAL INTENSITY, Whether WE LIKE IT OR NOT ...

The HUMAN RACE has not yet become "human", some groups and individuals strive for such intent. We are all beings in construction.

LOVE is the largest and most complete INTELLIGENCE of all universes, realities and dimensions, we are still in the embryonic stage to its understanding.

ETHICS Individually or collectively, is relatively a moral concept not because it is timely or fashionable. (this is moral), Ethics, when well understood, will demonstrate eternal truths about right and wrong (everything that upsets the balance is wrong), so healthy Ethics is a matter of SURVIVAL. Ethics not only cover human issues, but must be present in any dealings with planet Earth, nature and unique, without which no life would be possible, therefore worthy of respect and reverence.

INTELLIGENCE its manifestation means the information accumulated in the brain is known how to be used. The information in the brain is not intelligence itself, such as a computer, the brain is the PC, who uses it and how well it is used will demonstrate the presence of high or low intelligence.

SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR - don't believe in superiority and inferiority, but in Primitivism and evolution. Those who are behind are exactly where we once were; and those who are ahead of us will one day be at our side. Only some go at the speed of a turtle and others are pilots of formula one.

SIMPLICITY- since real simplicity contains all complexity itself, experiencing simplistic living to its fullness is required before assimilating the complexities of life.

JUDGMENT do not judge by appearances, they can be very misleading. It is necessary to see essence, and we are just barely able to see a little of the essence because we do not perceive it in ourselves. We must strive for understanding, this does not imply acceptance. Understanding is crucial and now the Major Challenge is to know how to deal wisely.

TRUTH - The truth indeed LIBERATES, the truth is always beautiful, it is ugly and painful the moment when the illusion is broken, for we live life attributed to an artificial beauty and being artificial, it is not sustainable.

INDEPENDENCE is all an illusion.

EXAMPLE:

When you put a CD to enjoy a sound that gives you pleasure, what happened before you can enjoy this moment of pleasure?

Someone spent the time to write the songs, people manufactured the instruments; others had to get the raw materials to fabricate the instruments that are finally distributed in stores. Various persons invented and perfected apparatus to record music, as well as equipment and accessories with a function to reproduce it and finally, having succeeded in both situations, made distributions to markets. To reiterate, imagine the number of people involved with the whole process of manufacturing and distribution of the CD in your hands that you are about to enjoy!

Now think about each product used in your day-to-day life. Look in any direction and you'll notice a number, sometimes a large number of people involved so that you can reasonably spend your day. You are completely dependent on a large network of human beings and thus have access to basic minimum or even a full life of comfort, luxury and pleasures that money (currently) can provide. It is possible, under favorable conditions, some autonomy is in the environment we live, but do not confuse certain autonomy with independence!

This is not the only network that we are entirely dependent upon. There is a network of nature that keeps us alive, providing all food and all raw materials for consumption of products that we need.

There is also a more subtle network, but just as important as any for a healthy survival, that which is of affection and gratitude of our individual existence, for without it we become sick and unhealthy ...

As such there are many other networks and subnets that sustain us, keeping us alive at various levels, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual essence, as we are an integral part of these networks, fitting in fulfilling our role in the progress of the net / web and when we refuse, this same network / web does not give us back what we need ...

DRUGS - All drugs alter the perception at different levels of reality (including alcohol), working as a pair of scissors cutting through our natural sensor allowing the dark side, that we all have at this stage of evolution, to come to the surface, invariably damaging, often violently, to a greater or lesser degree, ourselves and eventually all that are close to us. Drugs take you for a very long journey, far from yourself. DEEP AWARENESS CAN ONLY EXIST UNDER THE YOKE OF CLARITY.

ROMANTIC AND FRATERNAL RELATIONSHIP

LOVE IS NOT BORN READY

LOVE IS LEARNED

LOVE BECOMES

LOVE, A CONTINUOUS MOVEMENT

THAT WE MUST FOLLOW-UP

WITH FAITH, ETHICS, STRENGTH AND COURAGE.

THEREFORE, LIVE IN LOVE

IT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF OUR LIFE!

(and requires intelligence that can be developed)

The beautiful Trifid Nebula, also known as Messier 20, lies about 5,000 light-years away, a colorful study in cosmic contrasts. It shares this nearly 1 degree wide field with open star cluster Messier 21 (top left). Trisected by dust lanes the Trifid itself is about 40 light-years across and a mere 300,000 years old. That makes it one of the youngest star forming regions in our sky, with newborn and embryonic stars embedded in its natal dust and gas clouds. Estimates of the distance to open star cluster M21 are similar to M20's, but though they share this gorgeous telescopic skyscape there is no apparent connection between the two. M21's stars are much older, about 8 million years old. M20 and M21 are easy to find with even a small telescope in the nebula rich constellation Sagittarius. In fact, this well-composed scene is a composite from two different telescopes. Reflect on today's Scripture: March 23, 2008, Easter Sunday: His Resurrection

Acts 10:34a, 37-43

Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23

Colossians 3:1-4

John 20:1-9

Easter has come suddenly, with a burst of light!

Now we know that Jesus stands by his promises! In a flash, Christ has changed darkness and death into light and life. Our journey through the struggles of Lent and the pain of Holy Week is over. With malicious sacrilege, evil has done its worst to the sacred body of God's Son. With Mary and John, we saw Him die. We wept at the tomb. Then, before dawn on Sunday, Christ broke through the rock, shattered the power of sin and, according to tradition, appeared first to His Mother, then to the women and the apostles.

As we listen to today's first reading, we hear one of Peter's very first sermons. The curious bystanders were astounded at the change in this man. He comes fresh from the fiery tongues of Pentecost, still in shock at the dream he had on the way to Cornelius' house. Nothing was to be considered unclean. So he is free to preach to Gentiles the Good News of God's forgiveness and freedom for all. Peter and the others are commanded to baptize any who believe in the Christ. So the word spreads through the whole countryside and beyond. Resurrection is the hope of every living person. No wonder the apostles preached with such courage and enthusiasm!

They preached about a God who cared first for people who were poor and powerless, a God whose love governed all His relationships. And He taught us to not only believe in justice, but to act justly.

The Scripture readings during these fifty days between Easter and Pentecost are among the most exciting in the Church year. We burst into "Alleluias" over and over, and joyfully shout "Christ has Risen" this Sunday. But more than just singing, we settle into a new time of reflection on our own program for resurrection in these very troubled times. After all, it is our mission to bring new life to a troubled world. If we don't do it, who will? So let's repack for travel!

As followers of the Risen Christ, the time has come for greater efforts on our part to influence politicians and others on all the vital life issues that are integral to the teaching of Jesus Christ—from abortion and embryonic stem-cell research to corruption in government and all institutions—to proper medical care for the sick and elderly. Jesus teaches respect for every human person, whether alien or citizen. We need to study the document of the Bishops on Faithful Citizenship. Hopefully, many of us will continue our Why Catholic groups. Faith and action begin with understanding and loving the teachings and plans for action of our Church. We have so much to do as hope-filled Easter Catholics. These are critical times, and we must not fall back into laziness or complacency now that Lent has ended.

Let's hope our spiritual blood-pressure is just a bit higher as we proclaim the Good News.

Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

Pope Urges Youth to Form Friendship With Christ, for this is Best Relationship Key for Responding to Modern World

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 19, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI greeted university students gathered for an annual conference sponsored by Opus Dei, and encouraged them to foster a personal relationship with Christ so as to be able to respond to the great questions of our time.

The Pope greeted in three languages the 3,000 participants of the international UNIV congress, gathered today in St. Peter's Basilica. He then gave the traditional catechesis during his weekly general audience in Paul VI Hall.

"I offer a cordial welcome to all of you who have come to Rome from various countries and universities to celebrate Holy Week together, and to take part in the International UNIV Congress," the Holy Father told the youth. "In this way, you will be able to benefit from moments of common prayer, cultural enrichment and a helpful exchange of the experiences gained from your association with the centers and activities of Christian formation sponsored by the Prelature of Opus Dei in your respective cities and nations."

The conference this year, which ends Easter Sunday, is focused on the theme "Being, Appearing, and Communicating: Entertainment and Happiness in a Multi-Medial Society."

The Pontiff reminded the youth that with a "serious personal commitment, inspired by the Gospel values, it is possible to respond adequately to the great questions of our time.'

"The Christian knows that there is an inseparable link between the truth, ethics and responsibility," he said. "Every authentic cultural expression contributes to form the conscience and encourage the person to better himself with the end of bettering society. In this way one feels responsible before the truth, at the service of which, one must put one's own personal liberty."

A commitment

Benedict XVI said this implies "a mission requiring commitment." And to fulfill this commitment, he affirmed, "the Christian is called to follow Jesus, cultivating an intense friendship with him through prayer and contemplation."

"To be friends of Christ, and to give testimony of him wherever we are, demands, furthermore, the strength to go against the grain, remembering the words of the Lord: You are in the world but not of the world," he added.

The Pope encouraged the youth: "Do not be afraid, then, to be nonconformists when it is necessary; at your university, school and in all places."

"Dear young people of UNIV, be leaven of hope in the world that desires to meet Jesus, often without knowing it," he urged. "To better the world, make an effort above all to change yourselves through an intense sacramental life, especially through approaching the sacrament of penance, and participating assiduously in the celebration of the Eucharist."

The UNIV conferences began in 1968, inspired and encouraged by Opus Dei's founder, Monsignor Josemaría Escrivá, who was canonized in 2002.

This spectacular color panorama of the center the Orion nebula is one of the largest pictures ever assembled from individual images taken with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The picture, seamlessly composited from a mosaic of 15 separate fields, covers an area of sky about five percent the area covered by the full Moon. The seemingly infinite tapestry of rich detail revealed by Hubble shows a churning turbulent star factory set within a maelstrom of flowing, luminescent gas. Though this 2.5 light-years wide view is still a small portion of the entire nebula, it includes almost all of the light from the bright glowing clouds of gas and a star cluster associated with the nebula. The mosaic reveals at least 153 glowing protoplanetary disks (first discovered with the Hubble in 1992, and dubbed "proplyds") that are believed to be embryonic solar systems that will eventually form planets. (Our solar system has long been considered the relic of just such a disk that formed around the newborn Sun). The proplyds that are closest to the Trapezium stars (image center) are shedding some of their gas and dust. The pressure of starlight from the hottest stars forms "tails" which act like wind vanes pointing away from the Trapezium. These tails result from the light from the star pushing the dust and gas away from the outside layers of the proplyds. In addition to the luminescent proplyds, seven disks are silhouetted against the bright background of the nebula. Located 1,500 light-years away, along our spiral arm of the Milky Way, the Orion nebula is located in the middle of the sword region of the constellation Orion the Hunter, which dominates the early winter evening sky at northern latitudes.

Arches NP -- Grand County, Utah.

Odds & ends today from recent outings. This is part of a series of bubbles frozen in ice that I did at a roadside puddle in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan. Next time I visited this spot, bison had smashed all the edges and broken the ice to drink. The great miracle of nature is its constant flux. Astounding beauty, here for an instant and then gone, perhaps to be replaced by something similar - but never the same.

Exploring new pathways locally this evening (Apr 10th) took me back up to Wyming Brook but rather than the scene of yesterday's waterfalls, I continued a walk through the pine forest surrounding Rivelin Reservoir in what ended up being about a 3 mile trek either side of sunset.

Image wise, there were trees showing embryonic leaves of springtime, but the background here is all rather natural and not obviously managed as a forest. This means a clean point of view is difficult to find.

This scene caught my eye for the volume, intricacy & texture of the network of small branches.

(The Gummi family portrait)

Mr. Green kept toppling over. After the third time I decided enough was enough!

anyone else a wee bit freaked out by a macro view of these guys?

Just over a week ago, on 24 November 2014, I called in at Fish Creek Park to see if there was any sign of the Long-tailed Weasel. It did come out, but for maybe five minutes total, running around at top speed. I managed to get three or four shots, including this one, but that was all. Not the best composition, but usually there is no time to compose - you just point and click rapidly and hope that one photo will come out OK.

Since then, I’ve called in maybe three or four times recently, but there has been no sign of the Weasel and no tracks in the snow. I wonder if s/he is tucked down in its den, surrounded by all the many dead Meadow Voles that we have seen it catch recently. Weasels line their nests/dens with the fur from the animals they kill. Hopefully, it has not provided the nearby Great Horned Owl pair with a supper or two!

"Counting its tail, a large Long-tailed Weasel male, the largest of the three species in Canada, stretches nearly half a metre (20 in) in length, yet can slip into a hole just 3 cm (1.25 in) across. This enables it to enter small rodent tunnels used by mice and voles. In summer, it enters ground squirrels burrows in search of its favourite food. Average males measure 406 mm (16 in), their tail is 135 mm (5.25) long and they weigh 225 g (12.6 oz). Males are approximately 25 per cent larger than females, which on average weigh only 102 g (5.7 oz).

When winter approaches, within 30 days it grows a coat of white, giving it perfect camouflage against the snow -- all except for the tip of its tail, which stays black. A hungry predator, such as a hawk or owl, aims for that black tip, enabling the weasel to escape. Towards spring, between late February and April, in only 25 days, it reverses the process, acquiring the cinnamon-brown topcoat it will use all summer. This includes brown feet, unlike the other two species which retain white feet. The underside is usually buff-coloured." (Taken from the old weaselhead.org website).

“The long-tailed weasel mates in July–August, with implantation of the fertilized egg on the uterine wall being delayed until about March. The gestation period lasts 10 months, with actual embryonic development taking place only during the last four weeks of this period, an adaptation to timing births for spring, when small mammals are abundant. Litter size generally consists of 5–8 kits, which are born in April–May.” From Wikipedia.

Of course there is a second version of this, seen below. I always have trouble making up my mind what to keep.
