This is a photo of the sample ballot for my state county and district I took on October 14. Sustainable Development Goal number 16 is Peace, Justice, and Strong Intuitions. Many sustainable issues and progress we hope to make needs the support of governing bodies. November will be the first time I can vote in an election and I am so excited. It is vitally important that young people especially get involved in the political process because if not, we are not being represented. In addition to voting it is important to actually research the candidates and vote for a person and their platform rather than a party. The Baltimore Sun sent out a quick questionnaire to candidates to get started on looking at each's stance on issues elections2018.news.baltimoresun.com/. One of their questions was regarding the Chesapeake Bay and what steps Maryland should take to protect it. Among the responses were concerns about agricultural runoff and fracking. Hydraulic Fracturing to obtain Natural Gas is a disruptive process and uses chemicals that can also runoff and contaminate ponds, habitats, and groundwater. This is a concern not only for human safety but also for our efforts to preserve or restore wetlands which provide many ecosystem services including water purification. As water percolates through a wetland soil and encounters the immense and diverse life, many harmful toxins or metals or sediment is kept or used and water that continues on to the next body of water is more filtered.
