Titatium Tower is a building in Santiago, Chile. Among its interesting features is the use of seismic vibration isolators developed by an engineering company in Chile. The big test for them was the earthquake in Chile on February 27th, 2010.

Several vestiges have remained from this 18th century building, in spite of the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake and the following reconstruction that inverted temple’s orientation. This church has kept an outstanding reliquary of the Cross of Christ, a piece that, according to tradition, was offered by Byzantine Princess D. Vataça. You should also draw a closer look to the Gothic 14th century bass relief, which was offered by Holy Queen Isabel to D. Vatácia, depicting a Knight of the Order of Santiago fighting against the Moors.

Kayangan Lake, Coron, Palawan, Philippines: The Best Tourist Spot

This is Kayangan Lake, said to be the cleanest of its kind in the Philippines. In my modest travels around my country, I think this is one of the best tourist spots this beautiful land has to offer. The place is simply magical. ☺ So, to my dear friends here and abroad, list PALAWAN as one of the places you to ought to visit !!!!

About the photograph – First off, this is not a fisheye... it's a Vertorama stitched up from 20 Raw files. My ambition is to own a wide-angle lens, but I just can’t afford one while I’m training… so it’s CS4 for me! LOL! ☺

This building was damaged in the earthquake of Feb. 26, 2010; however, to what extent I do not know as it was closed when I passed through the city of Santiago, Chile.

Santiago City, Dawn after Earthquake 8,8

The Mercedarians were the first to establish a male monastery at the former Santiago de Guatemala.

The cross in stone at the atrium and the rooms behind the main altar are the oldest structures in La Merced and date from the seventeenth century. In 1749 Juan de Dios Estrada was commissioned with the construction of the luxurious sanctuary and cloister. He erected a building of low height designed to withstand earthquakes based on the experiences of the tremor of 1751. Arches and columns are wider to cope with the quakes. It was opened in 1767.

The effigy of Jesus Christ holding the cross was carved in 1650 by Alonzo de la Paz y Toledo.

Note the unique "Christmas trees" made up of objects like bicycle wheels, slippers, chairs etc., in the Plaza de Armas, in front of the Cathedral of Santiago.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago) is the seat of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, currently Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, and the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile. Construction of the neoclassical cathedral began in 1748 and ended in 1800; further alterations ordered at the end of the 19th century give it its present appearance.[1] Previous cathedrals in the archdiocese had been destroyed by earthquakes.[1]

The cathedral, located in the city's historic center, faces Santiago's Plaza de Armas and stands near the Palacio Arzobispal de Santiago, the administrative center for the archdiocese. The cathedral is also close to the Parroquia El Sagrario, a Catholic temple and a Chilean national monument.

Santiago, Chile.... pre-earthquake.

The museum had closed before I left due to damage caused by the earthquake of Feb. 26, 2010. I am presently unaware of the current situation... Incredible architecture to say the least.

View On Black

On the north side of the Plaza de Armas, facing the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales stands the Ayuntamiento or city hall, dating from 1743, and replacing an earlier, less imposing structure. Remarkably enough, this building was little damaged by the 1773 earthquakes. Today it houses two museums, the Museo de Santiago and the Museo del Libro Antiguo. The latter museum, the Museum of Old Books, is located in the main portal to the Ayuntamiento, the site of a printing press established in 1660.

Until a few years ago these bronze cannon barrels lay unattended under the arcade of the Ayuntamiento, mute testimony to Spanish colonial power.

Convent of Santa Clara founded in 1699. The convent's first church was completed in 1705, but destroyed in 1717. The remains standing today are those of a new church and convent started in 1723 and finished in 1734. A complex of corridors and stairwells gives access to various parts of the shadowy ruin. Truly beautiful and peaceful and I'm sure that I will return.

Bit of facts about Antigua Guatemala … you maybe surprised

Antigua Guatemala, founded in 1543, was the seat of Spanish colonial government for the Kingdom of Guatemala, which included Chiapas (southern Mexico), Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The full title bestowed upon the city was Muy Leal y Muy Noble Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Goathemala, that is, the "Very Loyal and Very Noble City of Saint James of the Knights of Guatemala." For the first century or more of its existence the city did not live up to the pretentious official title, but it ultimately grew into the most important city in Central America, filled with monumental buildings of ornate Spanish colonial architecture. By 1773, in addition to the cathedral and government palace the city could boast of over 30 churches, 18 convents and monasteries, 15 hermitages, 10 chapels, the University of San Carlos, five hospitals, an orphanage, fountains and parks, and municipal water and sewer systems. According to many authors, Antigua Guatemala in its heyday, with a population of perhaps 60,000, was surpassed in the New World only by Mexico City and Lima.

This image is inspired by image created by Katie for her exhibition … unfortunately I can find it :-) but I have space below to include it later.

Podrá nublarse el sol eternamente;

Podrá secarse un instante el mar;

Podrá romperse el eje de la tierra

Como un debil cristal.

¡Todo sucederá! Podrá la muerte

Cubrirme con su fúnebre crespón;

Recuerdas? Sí,

recuerdas.

Otros que el mismo nombre y apellido

tuvieron.

RAGUSA IBLA

Ragusa Ibla hosts a wide array of Baroque architecture, including several stunning palaces and churches.

The Cathedral of San Giorgio was built starting in 1738 by architect Rosario Gagliardi, in substitution of the temple destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, and of which only a Catalan-Gothyic style portal can still be seen. The façade is characterized by a flight of 250 steps and by massive ornate columns, as well as by statues of saints and decorated portals. The interior has a Latin cross plan, with a nave and two aisles ending in half-circular apses. It is topped by a large Neoclassical dome built in 1820.

On a narrow winding street that connects Ragusa Ibla (the new name of R. Inferiore, taken by a legendary Greek town maybe risen here) with Ragusa Superiore is the church of Santa Maria delle Scale ("Saint Mary of the Steps", built between the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries). This church is particularly interesting: badly damaged in the earthquake of 1693, half of this church was rebuilt in Baroque style, while the surviving half was kept in the original Gothic (including the three Catalan-style portals in the right aisle). The last chapel of the latter has a Renaissance portal. The chapels have canvases from some Sicilian painters of the 18th century.

The Church of the Souls of the Purgatory has a Baroque portal. The church of Santa Maria dell'Itria, built by the Knights of Malta in the seventeenth century, has a campanile with ceramics from Caltagirone and a canvas attributed to Mattia Preti.

The church of San Giorgio, designed by Rosario Gagliardi and built in 1739–1775, has a façade with tiers of juxtaposed columns. The Treasury contains silver items of value. Similar though smaller is the nearby church of St. Joseph, with an elliptic interior housing a seventeenth-century statue of the dedicatee.

The church of Sant'Antonino is an example of Norman architecture, characterized by a Gothic portal, while the Church of Immacolata boasts a fine fourteenth-century portal.

San Giorgio Vecchio has a re-entrant façade with a notable Gothic-Catalan portal, with a high relief on the lunetta portraying St. George Killing the Dragon, and Aragonese eagles.

The Hyblean Garden offers a panorama on the three churches of the Cappuccini Vecchi, St. James (fourteenth century) and San Domenico.

The Zacco Palace is a Baroque building, its Corinthian columns support balconies of wrought iron work, caryatids and grotesques.

RAGUSA IBLA

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago) is the seat of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, currently Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, and the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile. Construction of the neoclassical cathedral began in 1748 and ended in 1800; further alterations ordered at the end of the 19th century give it its present appearance. Previous cathedrals in the archdiocese had been destroyed by earthquakes.

(Fuente: Wikipedia)

Mexico - When transcends religion, tradition endures, the Chapel of the Rosary was first destroyed in the earthquake of 1959, to be completely ruined in the quake of'85 of the last century. The locals still use this chapel, here is adorned with the festivities of the day of the May 3 mason in Mexico.

A reflection on this would be that no matter how this destroyed my altar, my God is still there, worshiping here continued until the last wall is destroyed and while the entrance to the sanctuary remains in my foot, so my life would not falls defeated until my life was completely exhausted and my last breath I take your arms sir "

My faith endures while my existence here on earth is present, but not after it happens, but I am sure will continue in your footsteps, no matter how you call my religion the way you is there any mortal who believes in you there, I know you're there.

The Monastery of Jesus was founded around 1490 outside the city walls of Setúbal by Justa Rodrigues Pereira, a noblewoman of the Portuguese royal court. After 1491, King John II started sponsoring the building of the monastery, which he commissioned to Diogo

de Boitaca (or Boytac), an architect of unknown origin, possibly French. After the death of John II in 1495, King Manuel I continued supporting the construction works.

Most of the church was built between 1490 and 1495, and in 1496 the nuns of Order of Poor Clares were already living in the monastery. After 1495, under Manuel I, the nave of the church was covered with stone vaulting, replacing the wooden ceiling originally planned. It is believed that, in the 1510s, King Manuel I ordered the apse of the church to be rebuilt, although this is contested by some authors.[1] Founder Justa Rodrigues Pereira and her family were buried in the crypt of the church, located in the main chapel.

During the first half of the 16th century, Jorge de Lencastre, bastard son of King John II and Master of the Order of Santiago, donated to the monastery a large area in front of the South façade, known as Terreiro de Jesus (Jesus' Square). He commissioned an elegant cross in honour of the patron of the monastery, Jesus Christ, which was placed near the apse of the church. In the 19th century the cross was moved to the middle of the square.

The church and monastery were severely damaged by the Great Earthquake of 1755. The earthquakes of 1531, 1858, 1909 and 1969 inflicted minor damage.

The Church of São Julião was originally built in the second half of the 13th century. According to tradition, it was sponsored by the fishermen of Setúbal. It is known that, at the end of the 15th century, the church was connected to the Palace of Jorge de Lencastre, Master of the Order of Santiago and Duke of Aveiro. The Duke used the Church of São Julião as his private chapel until around 1510.

Between 1513 and 1520 the mediaeval church was rebuilt by order of King Manuel I. The rebuilding was sponsored by the King but also by the local population and the Master of Santiago. The style was the Manueline, the Portuguese variation of late Gothic, as attested by the main and lateral portals of the present church, the sole survivors of the Manueline building. In 1531 a strong earthquake stroke Setúbal and the Church of São Julião was damaged; the building was considerably modified in Mannerist style and reinaugurated in 1570.

The original church was almost completely destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755 and was greatly rebuilt and redecorated in the last third of the 18th century following the late Baroque style. From this stage date the general appearance of the façade, the inner wooden roof, the painted tiles, the main and lateral altarpieces and the main chapel.

Regrettably the museum was extensively damaged by an earthquake 33 days after this photo was taken.

The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.

(Fuente: Wikipedia)
