Somewhere in the dolomites

One of those days when the weather changes suddenly and you go from the clouds to the sun to finish with a pinch of sleet.

The Passo Poidoi - Dolomites

(Shot from our 'moving' tour coach)

Watching the sunset was a favorite pastime after eating meals in the rifugios. Staying at Rifugio Prato Piazza, we were treated to sunset playing on the dynamic cloud of a distant storm.

My son and I trekked to this absolutely breathtaking area on Day 3 of our trek and stayed overnight in this rifugio.

Walking to this location was like walking through scenes from the Sound of Music, it was so spectacular.

From the website of the Rifugio: "The Albergo Rifugio Pralongià got his name from the idyllic plateau above Corvara and San Cassiano. It is located at 2.157 metres in the middle of the breathtaking mountains, the Dolomites".

Thank you for your visits / comments / faves!

The Odle, Dolomites. Apparently when it's cloudy like this it means it's not going to rain! I took my waterproofs just in case.

As ususal, I suggest to press "L" and view it on black.

A different view of the mountain lake from a previous post. The light here is a bit different too, as the clouds kept moving affecting light and shadows.

Enjoy.

On the highway towards the beautiful Dolomites

Another image from our short time in Krabi. I was very sad to miss the sunset that I used for the background, but managed to lift the sky colours out by playing with the curves and by unsharpening it to bring out the textures and this made it quite striking. My second attempt at layering.

Dolomites mountain peaks, Italian Dolomites

The Dolomites (Italian: Dolomiti; German: Dolomiten; Friulian: Dolomitis) are a section of the Alps. They are located for the most part in the province of Belluno, the rest in the provinces of Bolzano-Bozen and Trento (all in north-eastern Italy). Conventionally they extend from the Adige river in the west to the Piave valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley (Val Pusteria) and the Sugana Valley (Val Sugana). But the Dolomites spread also over the Piave river (Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave) to the east; and far away over the Adige river to the west is the Brenta Group (Western Dolomites); there is also another smaller group called Piccole Dolomiti (Small Dolomites) located between the Provinces of Trento and Vicenza.

After walking in the complete wrong direction we came on a road called the Dolomite panorama road. Sometimes walking in the wrong direction isn't that bad!

The site of the Dolomites comprises a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps, numbering 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 metres and cover 141,903 ha. It features some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys.

In the north area of Veneto, surrounded by the Dolomites, is the Province of Belluno. It is a famous tourist destination where art, history and culture establish a perfect link with the wonderful surrounding environment. It is an extraordinary landscape with many small towns, impressive mountains, beautiful valleys and quiet woods.

The Dolomites are without a doubt the area’s largest attraction an extraordinary natural monumental masterpiece declared a Unesco heritage site in 2009, created over the centuries by an inimitable artist, Mother Nature. This imposing mountain range with Marmolada, Monte Antelao, Monte Civetta and Tre Cime of Lavaredo offers visitors the opportunity to admire outstanding landscapes, with big valleys close to impressive rocky mountainsides, small and big lakes that in summer are tinged with blue.

There are also many torrents, rivers and waterfalls with clean and roaring waters, thick woods that are a source of colour when the winter covers everything with white snow, creating an almost surreal landscape.

The sky too is extraordinary here, with incredible sunsets, followed by a wave of intense blue that colours the landscape, followed in turn by the dark of night, lightened by a wonderful moon and a multitude of stars. There are many ways to spend nature holidays, and also a lot of opportunities for those who want to explore the history and traditions of this land.

A tour of the villas and castles, abbeys and monasteries, archaeological sites, museums, cities and old small towns of the area provides ample opportunity for those who as well as experiencing the natural world want to discover the interesting historical and artistic heritage of this area.

Apologies if I am not around much today, the weather is way to nice to be inside on the PC!
