Buriganga river in Dhaka

During our two-month stay in Dhaka we lived in an area called Gulshan, which is considered to be the safest and richest part of Dhaka. There is constant construction going on in this area, with new residential buildings being built instead of old slums. As the middle class of Bangladesh takes loans to purchase new apartments, considerable amount of poor people still cannot afford to improve their living conditions. My friends in Bangladesh mentioned that average price of an apartment in Gulshan is almost equal to a same kind of apartment price in Washington DC, which IS quite high. The new buildings in Gulshan are equipped with 24-hour guards (essential to protect the inhabitants from frequent robberies), garbage removal system (in other words, someone comes by to pick up your garbage, instead of you having to leave it in the street), and cleaners (who actually spread the dust around the building every morning, when sweeping it). Having said this, the pollution around is the same for everyone. No matter which part of the city you live in you're still exposed to very dusty and smoky air and stink from the sewage that flows open right into the street.

In this photo the slums and new residential buildings are facing Gulshan lake, which flows through Dhaka. We did pass by the sulms, and needless to say that the living conditions there are way below acceptable. Such a life.

Thanks for your visit and have a great day!

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is spliced in parts by the Buriganga river and is surrounded by the world's largest jute plantations. Formerly under British rule, it became the capital of East Pakistan after the War and finally of Bangladesh which gained independence in 1971.

A population of 14 million crowds Dhaka. As repeated in every developing countires, population boom is turning to be a problem as people from the rural areas flock to where the promise of jobs is.

A mother bathing her children in a dirty pond in a Dhaka slum area. During dry season this pond will dry up and the family will have to go elsewhere to look for a watering hole. Safe drinking water is scarce in many poor Dhaka areas.

People around her were submerged in the vivid colors of merriment.

She was, too.

Yet, for some mysterious reasons she was sad.....

Her heart remained impermeable to all the colors.

The 16th of December, 1971 is a red letter day in our national history. It was on this day we were to snatch our independences after a life and death liberation war for long nine months. This victory was a victory of right against wrong. It was a war of self-emancipation. Every year we observe this day in a colorful manner. This day reminds us of the supreme in a colorful manner.
