Domo <3 Nikon

Today I had the opportunity of teaching photography to Junior High School students for a Volunteer after-school program. It was actually quite fun and I was rather amazed on how much information can be stored in a 12 year old brain considering how much I went off with all the math. I'd love to post some of those photos but I'm sure I'd need some sort of parent consent form hoopla. So I shot this one when I got home.

Be sure to check out the detailed strobist info in the previous photo.

Happy Bokeh Wednesday!

Day 7/7. Seven black and white photos of your life. No humans, no pets, no explanation.

Day 329/365

You must never loose your guard - how hang over you ever are! ;-) (NB: we never, *never* fight without boxing gloves!!!)

And now there is only 360 days left...

How many different dresses/skirts can I wear in a row?

• dress: Express, early 2000's

• belt: H&M, January 2010

• shoes: DSW, summer 2009

{blogged}

It's already midnight, and suddenly you realize you don't have a picture for the day, that's the moment when you improvise.

Day 12:

all me-made

Skirt; my own adaptions of Vogue 8363, made of burnt orange silk hessian

Top; the bodice part of Burdastyle magazine 08/2009, dress 128, made of charcoal wool mix

A few days ago I saw a funny post posing the question, "what if celebrities were little people?" the link brought you to dozens of amazing photoshopped images of celebrities like Martin Lawrence as half their normal size. After browsing through that post it got me thinking… "could I pull that off?" Tonight I decided to try. It wasn't a simple matter of just striking myself down. That was easy but would not have looked believable. Instead, I had to selectively shrink, shorten and enlarge specific body parts in order to get a realistic "little me" Now I'll admit, I didn't spend as much time as I would have liked on Lil Mike but I had to finish the whole image which was more than just the half sized version of me. I decided early on to add a full size version of me to aid in selling the effect. A little reference never hurt anyone. Well, maybe not hurt but definitely annoy. Ever go to the furniture store and see a sofa that you just love. Its comfortable, plush and would be perfect for you house, only to get it there and realize it is absolute HUGE. Now you barely have room to walk through your living room! Ya, my parents made that mistake 15 years ago. Suffice to say… we were really cozy in our 900 square foot home with 600 square feet of couch! "you need the bathroom? no problem, through that door, over the couch and love seat and up the stairs."

I shot this in 3 parts. The full sized me was first, followed by the half sized version in obnoxious clothes and finally the stool. I wanted to make sure when I reduced myself I wasn't missing any sections of the stool. Nothing drives me crazy more than not having anything to drink when your super thirsty. (ha, random!)

So with 3 images shot I went straight to editing. First up was a massive masking session. I masked each image out separately. Then combined all images into one comp. I painted in some shadows (not 100% happy with them)

I then created a grey gradient backdrop behind myselfs. This is where most people don't realize how much work I put into my comps. My goal is to make things look as seamless as possible. I want you to believe I shot this in a giant studio with a grey backdrop and 49 lights. When in reality I shot this in my living room against a white wrinkled bed sheet. I should write a book called "101 ways to make it look like you have more gear then you do" or "how to turn anywhere into a studio" I think they'd be interesting reads.

Whilst on the subject, I was thinking today about what to call the book I'm putting together at the end of the year for the 365 project. I really don't' want to call it straight "project365" I was thinking of something more catchy but in the middle of thinking my mind drifted and I was then wondering how fast would be able to run if my legs were 6 feet long. I think I had A.D.D before they classified it as a disorder. Back then people would call it being a kid! Oh ya, I was on that Ritalin shit. It didn't last long as I would be happy one minute and historically in tears the next. I had mood swings worse than… I'll leave that one alone!

So if your reading this in a book that means that I picked out a name. I hope it is a good one and I hope those who are reading this picked it up not only because of the kick as title but also because of my obnoxious face on the cover.

With 61 days left I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Problem is there is a giant ugly troll standing in my way. He wants to know "How can you drop an egg 3 feet without breaking it?"

Day 102

I was going to take some self portraits today but I was too lazy to do my hair and make myself look less crappier so I just took some of my dying dried up roses to take photos of.

I took a lot and can't decide which one is my favorite so I just chose randomly.

One month completed of the 365 project. Just another 334 days to go!!

I made it to day 100 :tada::confetti_ball: Loved every day so far! It’s been great constantly pushing and stretching my photography and creativity. For this image I really wanted a super long exposure to really smooth out those clouds, but I opened my bag and realised I didn’t have my remote shutter release (which allows for exposures longer that 30 seconds). Quite like how it turned out as it is, but I may revisit this image later on in the project to shoot it again!

This is day 2 of my 365 days effort. I find this quite a challenging thing to do, yesterdays was a black and white too - gonna have to have a bit of a think about tomorrows photograph.

Day 40/365

Theres this broad iron security gate up in my building, and I love the way the streetlight comes into the entrence, been trying to come up with a shot here for a while, but the ambient meters quite low for a portrait. I tried this first with my 50" Softbox, however the light was too soft and did not pick up the gate at all... so ended up with just the reflector and hard light.

Day 001/365

Hey Everyone!

Decided that today, being my 27th birthday would be as good a time as any to start up this project again. The original idea for this post was a self portrait, which was shot and will be posted later... but being as it was a hot day, Jonny decided that he wanted to go first, and truthfully the fact that his girlfriend Lisa was the one dumping the bucket, has something to do with how well this one turned out.

Tomorrow, we're leaving for the weekend, taking a small trip if you will ;) we will do our best to upload photos these days, but if we can't, understand us, it's quite difficult to access a computer over there :)

Have a great day, everybody!

Sold my red horse for a venture home

To vanish on the bow

Days End at the Gwynt Y Mor wind farm off the North Wales Coast. I took this a few years ago when i was working there during the installation of the wind farm.

Lordy, lordy, the skies are clearing again in the valley... well, on and off anyway. I usually go out wandering when I see that good skies might develop. I added to my stash of skies down at Golden Ponds and yesterday McIntosh Lake. Frankly, the Ponds and Mac Lake offer open vistas even at the widest of angles on my lens. I grabbed a variety of them to edit to post while I prep for some shots from the closing weekend blowout at Dougherty antiques museum south of town. They hauled old timer equipment out into the field... and daylight. Thumbs up, even without any steenkin' FaceBreak.

I am revisiting this clouding over the Rockies from a summer sky from last year. We can agree that this is as dandy a sky as I usually capture. I have several yet to edit. This view always welcomes cooler, if not globally changed weather and signals changeability... or not.

This is a turbulent sky warns folks of a stormy summer day. Earlier this week, I headed to Golden Ponds to check on the progress of spillway replacement and for a good walk. It is finally finished and the walk open if not entirely cleaned up. I got outta here a few times each month. I hope to bail more with the final sputterings of summer this year. All the Colorado newbies complain about the downturns with panic warnings. I am panicked about the extensive over-paving and warming of Largemont.

this was a day to remember

Nina and me slept in my car in the schoolyard and my whole grade got up at 6:30 am to make some last preparations for the day. it is common that the graduating class organizes some activities on one of their last days at school. we decided to fill the school building with almost 10,000 balloons and it was a complete success. we relaxed in the sun for about 2 hours and then all the other students were allowed to leave their classes. we sold food and beverages and our band played and we had organized some games and we had the best time. I went home at 3 pm and then watched the football match with friends in the evening. I was so tired by the time I went to bed and once again I noticed that very soon I won't see many of the people anymore, but this was definitely a day to remember.

I posted some photos of the day in the comments.

day 3/365 (Jan, 3 2014)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

I'm doing another 7 DAY SELF PORTRAIT CHALLENGE and I challenge YOU to join in with me! It will be from the 9th - 15th April 2018 and all you have to do is post a creative self portrait, in my group on facebook, every day for 7 days. (or use the hashtage #7DAYSwithHOLLY on instagram!) Like last year, I will be creating a video alongside the self portrait each day showing my process and how I made it to the final image (you don't have to create a video, but if you want to, be my guest!)

I will be making this an 'every 6 months' project, so if you can't make it this time then obviously there will be a next. I challenge you all to do the full 7 days but we all know life can get in the way so if you wanted to join me by creating/posting for a few days then do what you feel you can make possible!

I cannot put into words how much this project fulfilled me creatively, so I encourage you all to give it a try!

I've posted a 'pre-planning' video today about how I plan my image ideas and props before hand. Check it out if you fancy it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bZzGQ2ikH0

Leopard 2A6 tank. Flag day of the Finnish Defence Forces 2015. Oulu, Finland.

27th June 2010

quarter-to nine pm.

Muggy day. My room is unbearably hot, even with the window and door open, and it makes me sluggish. This isn't ideal, two days before my final Politics exam. Watched the Jackson Browne set from Glastonbury when I woke up this morning, and then Lottie came over to feverishly fill in Chemistry past papers while I revised EU domestic policies. Got cross because I seem to know almost nothing about anything in this exam, so listened three times over to this, loudly, and felt purified.

I hardly moved from my desk all day, but Lucy and I went out at golden hour to take photographs and make each other laugh. We took hundreds, and there are others which you would probably like better, with golden hour light and whispy hair and sun flares. I chose this one because when I was editing it I started crying, and I'm not sure why. I just love her so much.

After my Valentine's Day break, I've returned to my study of life's mysteries. I decided that I'd done enough procrastination... the day had come for me to confront The Cat. I donned my cat disguise and brought plenty of yarn and catnip. I met him in the sunny spot, where he seems most comfortable.

At first, my plan was to set the yarn down and watch The Cat play from a safe distance. But as I was setting the yarn down, I found that it had tangled around my tail extension (part of the cat disguise). I tried to run away, but The Cat saw me... or saw the yarn, at any rate.

He rolled around for awhile, biting at the yarn and getting me even more tangled up.

Finally, I gave a shout and he seemed to notice that there was a puppy inside his yarn (he wasn't at all fooled by my disguise), so he set it down and agreed to have a civil* discussion with me. This is about how our talk went:

Me: "So, Cat, I'd like to ask you a few questions about being a cat."

Cat: *blink*

Me: "Well... just one, really: why do you cats have to be so annoying?"

Cat: *get up, walk away with tail in air*

Well, cats may not be all that great for conversation, but this particular specimen seemed almost friendly at times... I'll have to take another look sometime.

-----------

*civil according to a cat, that is, which is quite a different concept than a puppy's definition, mind you.

day 109 of 365 days without colour

(I LOVE INDUSTRIAL DECAY)

Day 346 of my 365 photo challenge

This is my first day of the 365 day challenge. I'm going to try and unleash some of my creativity with this! Excited :)

It`s now day 12 and i`m still not talking

They`re trying to break me with constant walking

Once round the block and twice round the park

I`m keeping my mind focused to this childish lark

Today two pigeons mating in the park what a sight

If you didn`t know better you would have thought it a fight

Then a Lakeland Terrier came over and we went nose to nose

He said Just tell them what they want or keep on your toes

Was he a spy , double agent or just an old con

Something tells me that his was a false yawn

In the afternoon after walking with plenty of pees

It`s back into bed followed shortly by tea

Now with all limbs screaming and a drum for a tummy

They start asking again about Good Girl , they think it`s funny

Last night on my vow of silence I near broke the seal

Their was tea and cake on the go my Achilles heel

But to myself I was honest and my silence held true

And to end on a happy note I got cake too
