One of four Greater male Scaups pleasantly enjoying the golden light. I got seperation on this shot from the hens he was hiding behind. The tricky thing about these guys is getting the green to show on the head. He had turned just right allowing it to show it's brilliance.

The Impossible Projects newest px70 test film. SX70 camera, dial turned slightly toward the white.

Again not the weather for photography - not for me anyway as I fancy a lazy day if I'm honest.

So another from the archives - I do like a smart new butterfly and this little Brown Argus was looking very dapper one August morning. This shot was again taken with the background illuminated and the butterfly in my shadow - a little adjustment in m-mode and voila.

The grasshoppers are all around me during my walks now. Here's a close-up of one showing its intricate patterns and coloring; often perfect camouflage for its environment. As I step, they hop loudly in many directions!

Two dapper dudes lighting up Cubans, I hope. Fantastically dressed.

Scanned slightly askew, sorry.

The gnat that won't be zapped.

A second shot of the bouquet we received after our son's birth. I decided to process into B&W because I thought the lighting would produce a nice result. I like the way the B&W image highlights the dappling.

Here's wishing all of you a great Tuesday! For those in the US Thanksgiving is right around the corner...

Thanks as always for your enlightening and fun comments, faves etc.

Feeling rather, well; dapper.

Up on the blog.

The above shot was taken on my terrace a few inches away from Silk, while we had two beautiful and sunny days the beginning of this year. Silk has not been around that much since the previous spring, but since the middle of December 2016, he has turned into my best model along with Ziggy, my resident Great Tit.

This image is meant for the ever so delightful and talented nick.linda. Zooming in is recommended in order to better view the charming glint in Silk's eye.

Before I get into the convoluted background and relationships of Silk and the other main blackbirds, I just wanted to refer to my previous upload concerning the 1Frame4Nature event: www.flickr.com/photos/138493762@N02/31838121394/in/photos...

I really hope that my friends on here will upload an image on that site along with a short story about their connection to nature. It is such a great idea and I hope everyone will be part of it. Carole from Barry & Carole Bowden has already submitted her image and story, thus becoming the first participant from the UK.

Now back to my telenovela blackbirds: I am very happy to report that Silk's brother Shoko from this past summer is alive and well plus bigger than ever. He has been transforming more and more into the Flaushi of the blackbirds, even though he was absent for a while from my terrace. Super P-sized as Robert-Ang would say.

PB Junior from this past summer and thus Silk's half-brother as his mother Fleur is Silks's same-age sister from the summer of 2015, also is doing well. He takes after his late father PB (and not his mother Fleur) and is pretty slender. There is also one more male yearling blackbird as this past week all three of the dashing young males were having a series of pow wows on my terrace.

It also turns out that there are more yearling female blackbirds around. Besides Silk's half-sister Flora from this past summer via Fleur and PB, there is Sweetie Junior (the daughter of Sweetie and PB's son Velvet from the summer of 2015) plus at least 2 more.

Sweetie Senior, the super high-strung and neurotic ex-wife of Velvet from this past summer, has now really calmed down and integrated herself really well. She also loves hanging out for up to 30 minutes around me on the terrace, just like Fleur and her mom Amselina as well as Fleur's daughter Flora.

Fleur is my official and long-standing BFF, but the other ladies make it clear they would also like to be my BFF, lol. Fleur is not that happy about it, but lets everyone be as long as I reassure Fleur that she is the queen of my heart. I sure was never this popular in high school ;-)

Now that PB has retired to blackbird heaven, his vast territories are up for grabs amongst the slightly older male blackbirds and his older sons as well. The other blackbirds are all coming out of the woodwork now. I have lost count.

Currently, Ruffles (not sure about his lineage) is in the running to be the boss though Velvet is the true heir apparent and Silk's dad Flirty would like to take over as he has seniority over everyone, but he is a lover and not a fighter. There also is another "twin" of Velvet who is more shy, but also most dashing and charming. I now simply call him "Prince" from Prince Charming.

Skinny 1 & 2 are still floating around as is one fellow with a very yellow beak who would also like to be the head honcho. I considered calling him Subby, inspired by the classic Beatles song "Yellow Submarine." Plus a few more...

The blackbird ratio here is 4 males to 1 female, the exact opposite of the men to women ratio in my former hometown of New York City! Now if only I could transform all the handsome blackbird males into human ones and import them over to the Big Apple, the women there would be so much more relaxed and easy to be around ;-)

Silk aka Seide is the younger brother of my BFF Fleur, as he was born a good 6 - 7 weeks after her in August of 2015. And just like his sister Fleur in the previous winter, he "claimed" the goody angel. Papa Flirty also liked to to nibble on the treats there. But that is not why all those family members are rather stocky ;-) My late alpha male blackbird PB and his son Velvet did not go near the angel that winter and PB and Fleur's son from this summer, also avoids the goody angel and the peanuts. And again, that is not why PB and his sons are all so slender and elegant ;-)

Flirty and Amselina, the very sweet parents of Silk and Fleur are truly the picture perfect couple. They get along famously and are very loving with one another plus he is clearly the boss and she follows his lead. Everything is clearly delineated there ;-) They also do not instigate any squabbles with the other blackbirds or songbirds, except that PB was always chasing Flirty and even Amselina as this couple runs the backyard of the communal gardens, but my terrace falls into PB's and now hopefully his son Velvet's vast property holdings as it is part of the front yard!

The lovely couple has also always been together for the past few years, quite unlike Flirty's rival and Fleur's late husband PB. The late alpha male blackbird of my terrace and the expansive surrounding gardens, PB always chose a new trophy wife each year and if something happened to her during their various nesting attempts, he moved on to the next trophy wife. Whilst he kept getting older each year, his wives always stayed the same age as he chose the young females who had not yet reached their first birthday! PB was always their first...

The antics of the real-life blackbirds have been so wildly entertaining in the past year, that I have dubbed them the telenovela blackbirds. Both Fleur and Flirty also play a supporting role in my upcoming picture book series, "Flaushi the Buddha Jay."

The series is based on my very special and completely wild Eurasian jay Flaushi and all of his friends on and around my enchanted terrace.

Pied-billed grebes are often seen floating or diving on Florida’s lakes and ponds. This small pigeon-sized grebe has a short, blunt bill, which is encircled by a black band. These grebes are rarely seen flying, they usually dive and swim underwater when threatened. They feed on small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.

Some pied-billed grebes are year-round residents in Florida, and have an extended breeding season. Others migrate to northern states to breed and return to Florida for the winter.

Folk names of this grebe include Dabchick, Devil-diver, Dive-dapper, Hell-diver, and Water Witch.

I found this one along Alligator Alley Trail at Circle B Bar Reserve. Polk County Florida.

Got some fine light on this rascal ...

...and best viewed large.

Good morning everyone. As mentioned yesterday, posted today is a series on the male Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia) or Long-tailed Skimmer as it's also known. The Common Whitetail, is a common dragonfly across much of North America coast to coast , and is usually one of the first dragonflies to emerge each spring. The male has a striking and unusual appearance. It's white body, about 2 inches (5 cm) long, combined with the brownish-black bands on its otherwise translucent wings, gives it a checkered look and makes it one of the easiest dragonflies to identify while in flight.

I also included in the comment section a photo of an immature male and female for comparison purposes.

I hope you enjoy this series and have a truly great weekend. And for those of you in the United States, wishing you a Happy July 4th Holiday and weekend. Enjoy and be safe in whatever you do to celebrate America's Independence Day. And so you'll know, after today I'll be taking a two day break from posting here on flickr, but I'll be back on Tuesday hopefully.
