A 1940s view shows a CTA (or Chicago Rapid Transit, depending on the year) at the Chicago River bridge between Jackson and Van Buren on the former Metropolitan West Side Elevated mainline. Original Kodachrome slide photographer unknown, Art Gross collection.
They used to be "the green limousines"...then they advanced to these Flexible CTA buses. I really enjoy the buses with the exhaust pipes on the roof. I despise those that have exhaust in the bottom rear. Do you remember the accordion green limousines? With turns I always thought they would tip over. =)
CTA L, Indiana Ave. Chicago Junction Railway and the Kenwood L branch in the background. Note the freight train passing by.
Purchased original slide, photographer unknown.
The Chicago Transit Authority is running its holiday train around town to help spread some holiday cheers.
I called CTA to get their schedule and the CTA employee had no idea that this was going on. He muttered "... I gotta take my kids to see this...Sir if you go on our website there is a schedule posted for you...." He gave me the wrong web site URL. No harm though as I found it as you can see. Pretty cool I think.
Happy Holiday to all of you!
