Cottage in Castleton,Peak district, UK

I really liked the look of this cottage and the little string of lights... :-)

Savannah Georgia

This little cottage one of about fifteen, that are situated down an old country road not far from where I live. They were built in the 30s and I think they are rather beautiful. Originally constructed by the Railway Company {C.I.E] as homes for their manual workers. Many of them have been over modernised but thankfully, this one has been left alone externally and apart from the telephone wires, could still be back in that era.

It is constructed from concrete block and dashed with roughcast rendering externally which throws the rainwater off and stops it entering through any minute cracks. As brick was very expensive only areas which were very exposed, such as chimneys, were built with them.

The roof is covered with natural "blue Bangor" slates which were mined in north Wales and have a life of over 200 years. Very little timber is exposed on the outside with paving slabs used on the verge and left overhanging the gable wall to protect it. The porch is also original with a pitched roof and overhanging eaves and it keeps the wind off the front door.

. My favourite time to pass this cottage is in the early mornings, which it was when I took this pic. and preferably In the Spring as the House Sparrows nest under the front eaves as the rafter ends are exposed and there are ledges in there that they build on. They make an amazing racket flying too and fro carrying in clumps of dried grass for their nests which I think is really lovely. They always say that if you have birds nesting in your place, its a sign of good luck and that you are a fairly good human being. Id say there is a lot of truth in that.

I dont know who lives in this cottage but whoever they are, they must be alright and so much in tune with nature and their environment. I like the fact that all though its well loved obviously, it still has a little bit of wildness about it that I find appealing.

I just love the old stone wall, hedge and the picket gate with the grassy pathway that looks so natural. It just frames it perfectly I think. The rambling rose that needs tying in on the gable wall speaks volumes to me!

I do hope you like it and Im heading out that way for a walk shortly to see if the sparrows have started building.

Its not the greatest of photos I know, but I think there is something very homely and comforting to it.

It just inspires me as I can see so much in it, apart from from just a snap.

Hope your week is going well and ill catch you all later!

P@t.

Wow!!!! im getting swamped again as apparently you all want to move into "my" cottage! Mind you if you bought it I would stay in it and look after it for you! Id say E300,000 would come near enough!!!

Im so glad you like it as it is just lovely.

Ill get back to you all as soon as I get a chance.

If I had the money Id buy you all a cottage each!!!

Think of the great "crack" and the parties we would all have if we were all living beside one another!!! Im game for it!!!! P@t.

This is how we have fun at the cottage.........Boating, skiing, wake boarding, cruising and going as fast as the seadoo will go...:))))))))))) All done safely of course.....

This is just a typical sunny day at the cottage.

Happy Fence Friday....

COTTAGE SLEEPING

Slate quarries now gone

Cottage sleeping in the past

Mountain memories

Haiku poem

Seen from the steam train .Abandoned slateworker’s cottage in the foothills of Snowdonia,

Scattered throughout North Wales, and particularly concentrated in the Snowdonia area, are a large number of abandoned slate mines and quarries.

The remote sites of the slate Quarries add greatly to the potent sense of mystery. For it’s almost unbelievable to think that for years from 1840, men were employed by quarries , many of them living in purpose-built houses in bleak locations – treeless and one of the wettest places in Wales. The workers’ cottages still stand in splendid but ruined isolation .. For miles around are scattered enigmatic structures, including bits of rusting machinery and a succession of mills, and barracks constructed at different stages of the quarry’s development – testament to the lengths that were gone to to reach the then valuable slate, which lay in beds underneath the mountains.

Towards the end of the 1960s the slate industry was in rapid decline.

Irlanda - Kinvara - Cottage

Kinvara (Irish: Cinn Mhara, meaning "head of the sea"), also spelled Kinvarra, is a sea port village located in the south of County Galway, Ireland. It is located in the civil parish of Kinvarradoorus in the north of the barony of Kiltartan.

The Great Famine in the 1840s and a series of emigrations that continued until the 1960s reduced the population of the village – once a thriving port and a significant exporter of corn and seaweed – to no more than a few hundred people. From around the 1980s the population of the parish of Kinvara started to increase while the village started to grow in size.

The village lies at the head of Kinvara Bay known in Irish as Cinn Mhara (or more recently Cuan Chinn Mhara) from which the village took its name. This is an inlet in the south-eastern corner of Galway Bay. Kinvara is situated in the territory of Uí Fiachrach Aidhne, which is coextensive with the diocese of Kilmacduagh (Cill Mhic Dhuach). The parish is roughly coextensive with the Ó hEidhin territory of Coill Ua bhFiachrach (wood of the Uí Fhiachrach) and this name was still in use in the mid-19th century as recorded by John O'Donovan in his Ordnance Survey letters. Kinvara is situated in the north of the barony of Kiltartan and close to the border with The Burren in County Clare in the province of Munster. The parish is bounded on the north by Galway Bay, on the east by the parishes of Ballinderreen (Killeenavarra) and Ardrahan, on the south by the parishes of Gort (Kilmacduagh) and Boston (Kilkeedy) and on the west by the parishes of Carron and New Quay (Abbey and Oughtmama).

The iconic Buachaille Etive Mòr rises majestically behind an old cottage in the Glencoe area of the Scottish Highlands. It was my first time in the area and I have to say it is stunning and I will definitely return. Most people shoot this mountain from the east where the River Coupall cascades over the rocks and whilst I did go to that location and I did shoot there a little I also made a conscious decision not to shoot where everyone else does. There a photographic opportunities every way you turn so my advice to anyone visiting the area is just have a wander and find your own locations, you won't regret it.

Having said that, I'm sure I'm not the first to shoot from this angle.

Black Rock Cottage looking towards Buachaille Etive Mor. I know its a cliche type shot, its been done so many times before and better as well, I just had to take the shot, the light on the cottage and light on Buachaille at the same time, It was the layer of cloud around the mountain i really loved. I had been at the waterfall in front of Buachaille, (the normal shot lol), but the mountain was totally covered in cloud, so though i would try another view. I bumped into Karl from www.glencoephotography.co.uk on a workshop, didn't want to get in the way, they seemed deep in thought.

Our cottage today, all covered with snow but so cosy inside.

We are officially snowed in. Could not get the car up the hill to get to the main road and couldn't get down the old track either. I go into baking mode on days like this and start making batches of Scones and pots of soup. I made real play dough for my daughter as well, the kind you boil up in a pot. I said to her, "We need to add some Cream of Tartar, not sure what it does or what it is made of but it is powdery and we need at least two spoons of it so it must be important."

She then asked a wee while later...."is it time to put the Powder of Tartan in yet?"
