Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) male.

These dragonflies are braver than most and not so easily spooked. This one was seen perched on a plant in my pond, and although it's named the Common Darter, I see very few in my garden. I do see them in abundance when I go out and about though.

Shot with my D70, a camera that can be picked up for less than £200 these days. As you can see, it's still a more than capable camera.

Wishing you all a great day!

Back to nature today with a great walk at Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County, near Washington D.C. Plenty of Odes and a few birds too, but the trails over the wetlands are the standout. Libellula lydia

After a morning of military photo subjects I thought I would include a more gentle subject. Found this Common Blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus) at Martin Down yesterday.

This Common Nighthawk woke up when I approached the tree he was resting in.

A pair of common eiders lives in the enclosure of the Humboldt penguins at our zoo. This is the male. The common eider is the largest duck in Europe. It reaches a length of 50 to 71 cm (20 to 28 in) and a weight of 0.81 to 3.04 kg (1.8 to 6.7 lb). The male is very handsome but difficult to photograph as the eye is surrounded by dark feathers . I'm quite pleased that I have managed a shot where the eye is really visible.

These beauties found each other at a Frog Fest last Monday. The sun shone, it was warm, the sky was blue and the birds were singing ... Spring, you were so fleeting!

The common milkweed plant is valuable especially as a host plant for Monarch butterflies, but I would not call the flower especially attractive-that is until you get up close.

Many butterflies are named after characters in classical mythology and the Common Blue (Polyommatus Icarus) is no exception. Icarus was the son of Daedalus. He tried to escape from Crete using wings fashioned from wax and feathers, but he flew too near the sun and the wax melted, so he fell into the Aegean Sea and drowned. The name Polyommatus means many-eyed because the underside is dotted with numerous eye-spots.

This is a female, identifiable by the orange lunules around the edge, and by the largely brown upperwings, though the amount of blue is variable. Below I have posted a female with an excessive amount of blue that I took seven years ago. I look this one in West Yorkshire yesterday.

Male Common Blue, have lots of blues to post, mainly to compare between micro 4/3rd’s and full frame set ups. This one taken with the Nikon D610/Sigma 150mm + Benro A48T monopod.

I paused here for 10 - 15 minutes, only moving a few feet back and forth to position myself for photos. In this time I saw Bush Tits, Song Sparrow, Chickadees, Common Yellowthroat, Black-Headed Grosbeak, Cedar Waxwing, Anna's Hummingbird, European Starlings, Red Wing Blackbird and a Bald Eagle high overhead. (not all were cooperative in having their photo taken)

I liked this one of the gallinules and did a photoshop treatment of mainly the water. I tried to maintain the integrity of the original and add something to spice up one of the most common species in my area.

I had a very early start this morning expecting calm, overcast conditions to aid my search for roosting Dark Green Fritillaries. Unfortunately I arrived to clear skies and a fairly strong breeze. No fritillaries found but this very fresh second brood Common Blue was a nice consolation.

This Goldeneye was hoping for some snacks (which I didn't have) and came surprisingly close to glance at me with that bright eye of hers.
