Accession No: 1983.3.6 obv.
A Roman bronze coin, believed to be a Dupondius, produced during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, 69- 79 AD.
The coin is struck from "Orichalcum", a gold/ yellow coloured copper alloy. The obverse features a bust of Vespasian turned to the right, the base of a crown or wreath is partially visible on his head.
The reverse is heavily worn, however the lettering "Fortuna" survives, indicating that the coin would likely feature a figure of Fortuna holding a cornucopiae.
Vespasian gained fame for his exploits as a military commander in Britain and Judea, before seizing control of the Empire in 69 AD, bringing to an end "The Year of the Four Emperors". He is also noted for beginning the construction of the Colosseum.
This coin is presumed to be a Dupondius due to its size and material composition. However, due to the coin's condition, its exact denomination cannot be ascertained for certain. It has been classified as "AE 27", indicating that is a bronze coin with a diameter of 27mm.
The Dupondius was a coin issued throughout the majority of the Roman period. It's value equated to 2 Aes or 1/8 of a Denarius (The As was the lowest denomination of Roman coinage).
The coin was donated to the collection by the South Staffordshire Archaeological and Historical Society, and was likely to have been unearthed during their excavations at the Roman site of Letocetum at present day Wall, Staffordshire in 1961 - 63.

This little boy challenged all the people in the port of Boca Ratón (Península de Macanao, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela) to drop a coin in the sea and he will fish it jumping from the bridge. And he did it!!!... Amazing boy...for the show he keep all the coins, of course!
