Obverse view of a selection of ancient coins (Persian, Greek, Roman Republic, Roman Empire) - ddh

I've got a bunch of coins from my trips last November. Coins from the UAE, Poland, Netherlands, England and Spain... and probably a few others. They sit in a tray on my nightstand, and remind me of where I've been.

I hold on to them because I'll need them when I go back.

Coin surface magnified 67 times. Had to play around with colors which made the picture semi-black and white. The diameter of the coin is about 1cm (~ 0.394 in, or 50/127).

My fave hobby. This is my coin collection. I have coins from many different countries, the majority of which is of course US coins and Philippine coins.

I don't remember when I started, but when I see a non-US coin, I immediately pocket it and add it to my collection. People have also given me non-US coins they find for they know I'm the coin freak. Like today, the director in my old department gave me an Australian coin that her partner had given her. It was sitting on my keyboard when I came in to work today.

I love looking at these. Every now and then, I dump them all out, and sort them by continent and country (to the best of my knowledge.. hey, I try, not sure how accurate these locations are though). I have more coins, but I didn't get to add them here. Some of them are Euro's and I have no time to look them up to find out which country they come from. Some, I just can't read them to know which country it's supposed to be.

Oh, and I think I will also start collecting paper money. They don't have to be big denominations, just different. I have a 10 pound bill, a 1 dollar from Kuwait and Singapore, and then there's Philippines. I'd love to have more of these if I can...

I am also collecting the 50 different state quarters. I have most of them up to date. I think there's 3 more left. I started that in 1999, and have been collecting every single one that comes out each year. They're in my special US map made for these coins.

Besides those, I also have some US coins that I collect for certain reasons. Too many to mention, but there's a whole bunch, including oldest penny (1918), different forms of the dollar coin, 50 cent coin, my birthyear coins, WWII coins... Of course, there's my Philippine coins that I collect and sometimes use on the rare times I go back home. I even have a Philippine coin from 1944 that has "United States of America" written across the back, and "Filipinas" on the front. How cool is that? History!

I love collecting coins. They tell history. Like the Canadian penny. I have one that has the young skinny Elizabeth on them, one that has the old, little chunky Elizabeth on it, and one with a man on it (not sure who he is) but it tells a story of a country with an interesting history. What I did notice is how many countries have Queen Elizabeth on them. The hand that reaches far....

Coin Trees work on a similar principle to Wishing Wells. Passers by drive coins into the trunk of a tree using a heavy stone. In times gone by it was believed that a coin driven into a tree by a sick person would cure them. If the coin was then removed, the person who removed it would contract that particular ailment. Coin Trees are most commonly found in the northern half of England and in Scotland. A silver coin dated c.1700 has been seen in one of these trees.
