The "Morspoort" is one of the old city gates of Leiden.
Built in 1669 (by Willem van Helm) the gatehouse was used as a prison during a long time. The bridge in front of the gate made direct road led to the gallow fields.
Das Biertor stammt aus dem 14. Jahrhundert und gehörte einst zur Stadtmauer.
Dahinter befindet sich der Kindergarten in den ich als Kind gegangen bin. :-)
The Biertor dates from the 14th century and was once part of the city wall.
Behind it is the Kindergarten I went as a child. :-)

In the park are around 1700 on the advice of Menno van Coehoorn constructed fortifications can still be seen quite well. The park was in 1870 to a design by Dirk Wattez expanded to include a large pond. Nowadays, it acts, with the adjacent Spoolderbos, as well as water extraction. There are present for this purpose a number of the pump wells in the field. The park is located a tavern with the same name.

The current Oostpoort, or East Gate, was built around 1400. It is a lightly built gate with a high-ceilinged area on the ground floor. Shots could be fired from this room through loopholes.
The stairs are in a separate stairs tower, from which the battlement parapets of the adjacent city walls could be reached. Above the tower there was a waiting room. The gate is connected with the water gate by a piece of city wall. The water gate has a passage that could be closed off with gates. On the field side, above middle, a machicolation has been preserved.
In 1514 the towers were raised with a hexagonal floor and given a steep spire. Between 1962 and 1964 the gate was restored and turned into a double studio house. Later the houses were joined into one house, because the living space was too small. Since 1988 the former battlement parapet has been open as an exhibition area.

The Koppelpoort is a medieval gate in the Dutch city of Amersfoort. Completed around 1425, the gate combines land- and watergates and is part of the second city wall of Amersfoort, which was constructed between 1380 and 1450.
The Koppelpoort is the larger of the two remaining medieval gates of Amersfoort and one of the best preserved in the Netherlands.

So I promised myself that I would come back to this gorgeous spot in the Hague as soon as I got a wide angle lens. I went by there this evening. The weather wasn't perfect and it took me a lot of tries before I got something that was acceptable. This had something to do with the traffic jam on the right lanes which sucked. Anyway, this is a 2 image vertorama [2x HDR, 6 exposures + post processing in PS CS5] shot at 10mm. I thought I could get the complete building on my photo in one shot but even with 10mm that isn't possible. By the way, this building is occupied by Nationale Nederlanden, a Dutch insurance company. It also occupies the Delftse Poort building in Rotterdam. I captured that building many times, it has the orange logo on it.
Thanks for comments, fav's and views. Much appreciated!!

The former Hanzestad of Elburg is one of the most famous old cities in the Netherlands. In the old town of Elburg it seems that time has stood still. The city has a rectangular street plan dating back to the Middle Ages. The old Hanzestad has more than 250 monuments in its walls. One of the most iconic buildings of Elburg is the Agnites Monastery. The Agnites Monastery has been re-appointed and now houses the Museum Elburg.
The early morning sun found a slit in the cloud cover and for a few moments cast an orange glow on BC Place Stadium and the CBD buildings in downtown Vancouver BC.
The two shadows on the Stadium are from the Vanity and Citygate-1 towers.

Description
600 year old city gates called Monnikendam, Amersfoort (the Netherlands)
Finally I found an hour of my time to apply some humble digital matte painting techniques on this photo I took in May 2003. Lots of PS Adjustment layers were used, together with the accompanying painted masks to achieve the picture I had in mind for months.
The grass in the original shot was much greener and saturated because of the bright sunny daylight. The sky was flatten out as well, almost to a 100% whiteness [how unprofessional :] So I desaturated the lawns to draw a bit more attention to this medieval construction. After that, I grabbed a piece of threatening sky from a shot I found somewhere in my achieves. The heavy sky is from a series of shots I took in Delfzijl (Holland) July 2003, during a huge DelfSail (Sailboats) event where the weather conditions were totally different that day.
I applied a simulation of a [L223 Eight CTO] gel on top of the artwork, played with the transparency slider and layer modes until the golden hue effect I had in mind was achieved throughout the scene.
And no, this is not HDR. In addition, I deliberately wanted to keep the look and feel of a real photograph as much as possible without getting the 100% matte painting effect.

The Koppelpoort is a city gate in Amersfoort. It is a combination of land and water gate. The name is probably derived from the East Middle Dutch word meaning Coppel common pasture. The area outside the Koppelpoort was a common area. The name does not therefore indicate to the fact that the gate has two functions. The port is located on the northwest side of the city, where the canal system - fueled by the Holy Berger Beek from the southern watergate Monnikendam - leave the inner and coalesces with the Flierbeek Singel
The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 as part of the second stadsmuur.De entire wall was completed around 1450. The gate was attacked in 1427 during the siege of the city. This attack was repulsed.

Situated over a hundred meters above the valley of the Cérou and its tributary the Aurosse.
The fortified town was built in 1222 by Raimon VII, the Count of Toulouse, who, though not a Cathar himself, tolerated the heresy.
In 1222, Cordes received its charter to become a "bastide" from the Count of Toulouse. It is generally considered to be the first of the bastides of SW france. Bastides were "new towns" originally conceived to resettle and pacify people caught up in the Albigensian Crusade. Though not fortified, bastides were often built in defensible locations. It was built between 1222 and 1229 to protect the scattered population of the area from conflict. It was made to replace the village of Saint-Marcel, which was burnt down by the troops of Simon de Montfort in 1215, during the Northern Baron's crusade against the Albigensians.
During the heyday of the city (1280-1350) sumptuous Gothic houses, for which Cordes is now famous, were built by noble families and wealthy merchants.
From 1562 to 1625, wars of religion caused ongoing disturbances.
The walled city, regarded as the stronghold of the Albigensians, became a favourite of the Huguenots.
The, epidemics of plague in the fourteenth century reduced the population of the city and by the end of the seventeenth century, the construction of the Canal du Midi reduced trade and commerce, and the population fell to 2,500 inhabitants.
