Not much done for this just yet, but it was well worth the 6 hour drive which had me arriving in Red Rock Canyon State Park at 2:08 AM. All the light is "natural" in the sense that I didn't add any... however the many late night trucks with high-beams kept sweeping these rocks and doing a great job of painting them. Thank you late night truckers! The moon in its last quarter also pitched in to the light painting efforts. I have about 50 more frames... but I'll get 'round to that when I get back.

This image is unworked at all. Just exported the 92 thirty second captures and stacked them using "Image Stacker" by Tabaware. The fuzz at the top was from a thick cloud that thankfully didn't advance any further during the blustery early morning. Temperature was a very pleasant 64 degrees. As I write this, it's 97. Blecch.

Look carefully and you can see 4 "Iridium Flares" just above the rock formation. One is fairly faint. Hold that! On closer inspection I believe all the dashes are from an aircraft, or perhaps another bright satellite. See below for a cleaned up image with 18 more minutes of trails.

Each image was shot at ISO 800, f/3.5 at 10mm on a 10-22mmEFS lens.

I'll do some work to clean up the hot spots and remove the odd bits of noise. But I'm pleased. How about you?

By the way, this image has a "sister" which was shot on my Canon 50D while these images were being captured.

Looks good larger, too!

tricia C., Chris W., Avery, Jerry McC, and Marc B. selected this as their favorite from "Which One?"

California City, CA

California city is a planned community that was supposed to be the state's next big metropolis and is the 3rd largest city in the state by land area, but currently only populated by around 14,000 and offering little opportunity outside of employment at the nearby Air Force base or prison. Ambitious developers laid out a massive grid of streets, mostly still unpaved, extending for miles beyond the developed parts of the city.

If you've seen Erik Estrada hawking desert real estate on late night TV, this is what he's selling.

The remnants of this '61 Buick Electra sit on a lot out on the west side, a long way from anything except the tiny real estate office where I turned off the highway.

This is a 2 minute exposure lit by the full moon right after sunset, additional light added with a xenon flashlight to contrast with the cool color of the moonlight and highlight the wildflowers.

Mojave Desert, Kern County, California

11 May 2012

San Francisco Listeni/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the leading financial and cultural center of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The only consolidated city-county in California, San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, giving it a density of about 17,620 people per square mile (6,803 people per km2). It is the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 14th most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2012 population of 825,863. The city is also the financial and cultural hub of the larger San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, with a population of 8.4 million.

San Francisco (Spanish for "Saint Francis") was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for St. Francis of Assisi a few miles away. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Due to the growth of its population, San Francisco became a consolidated city-county in 1856. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States.

San Francisco is a popular tourist destination, known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former prison on Alcatraz Island, and its Chinatown district. It is also a primary banking and finance center.

Fort Baker is one of the components of California's Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Fort, which borders the City of Sausalito in Marin County and is connected to San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge, served as an Army post until the mid-1990s, when the headquarters of the 91st Division moved to Parks Reserve Forces Training Area. It is located opposite Fort Point at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay.

Fort Baker was previously named the Lime Point Military Reservation. It was renamed in 1897.

Fort Baker was included in a historic district listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, as part of Forts Baker, Barry, and Cronkhite.

Fort Baker features essentially intact historic structures and landscapes, and is currently under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service (NPS). It is renowned for its spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay.

Many of the military-built buildings still stand, and current institutions in the area include Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, a motor lifeboat station, the Travis Marina (an Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility), and the Bay Area Discovery Museum. A sustainability and climate change focused think-tank, The Institute at the Golden Gate, has its offices at Fort Baker.

Important to note:

•ALWAYS search the internet for a Blurb discount coupon code before ordering. At this point in time “RINGIN15” will work for 15% off the purchase price.

•This is print-on-demand so the price is higher than I would like and my mark-up is very little, but it is the only way I can make this book available for sale.

•This is book one of two books. I prefer to publish one book each year, but with over 300 images I had to divide the photographs into two separate books.

•You may preview the entire book. There are no surprises. You’ll know what you’re getting before purchasing.

•This year I’m making available (3) versions: ebook, soft cover and hard cover. (ebook is underway and not yet available.)

•I’m currently editing Book Two, which should be available in 4-6 weeks.

Kern County, California

29 April 2012

Marina del Rey is an affluent unincorporated seaside community and census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California. A Westside locale, the population was 8,866 at the 2010 census. Fisherman's Village offers a view of Marina del Rey's dominant feature, the Marina, the world's largest man-made small craft harbor with 19 marinas with capacity for 5,300 boats and is home port to approximately 6,500 boats. The harbor, the Los Angeles Times said in 1997, is "perhaps the county's most valuable resource".

The marina itself, a specially designed harbor with moorings for pleasure craft and small boats, is surrounded by high-rise condos, hotels, apartments, shops, and restaurants. The area also includes the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute and the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center. It is the former home of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which regulates the Internet's address and domain name systems.

A newly hatched coot, trying to get its mother's attention. This was taken in California City's Central Park, in the middle of the Mojave Desert. California City started as a retirement community in the1960's (designed by Del Webb). The well designed park is now pretty much in ruin, and has been taken over by the birds and ground squirrels.
