Berwick-upon-Tweed - views of the Royal Tweed Bridge from an Ice house. Ice houses were built in Berwick in the 1780s to store ice brought into the town in the winter months from the local lakes and rivers. The ice was used to preserve the salmon caught in the river. Some of the ice houses were still in use in the 20th century. The bridge over the river is a road bridge crossing the River Tweed. The bridge was constructed between 1925 & 1928. The northern span is one of the longest spans in the country at 371ft. (916)
