« La végétation s'arrête, elle meurt ; nous, nous restons pour des générations nouvelles, et l'automne est délicieuse parce que le printemps doit venir encore pour nous. »

de Senancour

Pompois, près de Thouars.

Subfamily: Epidendroideae Tribe: Podochileae Subtribe: Bulbophyllinae.

Species: Bulbophyllum longiflorum Thouars .

Photographed at Kipandi Butterfly Park, 36km from Kota Kinabalu. This specie looks like a pretty lampshade. However, they have an unpleasant scent, faintly like garbage. The smell is noticeable, but I didn't know it came from this orchid. Definitely not for indoors. I'm scared of bees, so I seldom put my nose to a flower. :-)))

This orchid inhabit rainforests from sea level to 1,600 metres (5,300 feet). The pseudobulbs are up to 4.5 cm (1 3/4 inches) long and spaced about 5 cm (2 inches) apart on a creeping rhizome. The single leaf can be up to 15 cm (6 inches) long. The inflorescence is up to 20 cm (8 inches) long and can bear six to eight flowers in a semi-circle at the end.

{Bulbophyllum generally}

The genus Bulbophyllum is the largest in the orchid family (Orchidaceae) with about 3,000 species. They are widely distributed, from the Americas, Africa and Madagascar to Eastern Australia and the Western Pacific Islands.

It has many vegetative forms; tall plants with cane like stems, root climbers and creepers and pendulous epiphytes. Some have developed succulent foliage. Although the flower form is diverse, they have a basic structural blueprint that serves to identify this genus. The center of diversity is in West Irian and New Guinea which seems to be the evolutionary homeland.

a very old town :

Although there is evidence of human habitation here 5,000 years ago, it is only in the seventh century that the town appears in the historical record. In the 760s, Thouars found itself in Aquitaine, the most robust fortress in the entire region according to contemporary chroniclers. This was a violent decade as Duke Waïfre, struggling to preserve the independence of Aquitaine, fought against the expansionist ambitions of the French King, Pepin the Short. In 762, accompanied by his son, the future Charlemagne, appeared outside Thouars. He destroyed the Gallo-Roman town and torched the castle.

In the ninth century the first of a line of viscounts took charge of Thouars: he and his successors would control the fiefdom for more than five centuries until the end of the fourteenth century. The earliest of these viscounts for whom information survives is Geoffrey I, known as the founder of the Thouars dynasty. Located at the south of Anjou and at the frontier with Aquitaine, the Viscountcy of Thouars became a rich fiefdom with a strategic location extending from Upper Poitou all the way to the coast.

Thouars was the birthplace of the medieval general Louis de La Trémoille. In 1619 his heir Henri de La Trémoille married Marie de la Tour d'Auvergne, sister of Turenne. She razed the old gothic château-fort to build the present château.

Bulbophyllum is a massive genus (probably the largest in terms of number of species) that is widespread in SE Asia, throughout Africa, Australia and tropical America. Bulbophyllum is from Greek 'bulbos' (meaning bulb) and 'phyllon' (meaning leaf) referring to the prominent leafy pseudobulbs of most species. This genus was established by Aubert du Petit Thouars in 1822.

In the 11th century, William de Volpiano, the Italian architect who had built the Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy, was chosen by Richard II of Normandy to be the building contractor of the new Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. He designed the Romanesque church of the abbey, daringly placing the transept crossing at the top of the mount. Many underground crypts and chapels had to be built to compensate for this weight; these formed the basis for the supportive upward structure that can be seen today. Today Mont Saint-Michel is seen as a building of Romanesque architecture.

Robert de Thorigny, a great supporter of Henry II of England (who was also Duke of Normandy), reinforced the structure of the buildings and built the main façade of the church in the 12th century. In 1204, Guy de Thouars, regent for the Duchess of Brittany, as vassal of the King of France, undertook a siege of the Mount. After having set fire to the village and having massacred the population, he was obliged to beat a retreat under the powerful walls of the abbey. Unfortunately, the fire which he himself lit extended to the buildings, and the roofs fell prey to the flames. Horrified by the cruelty and the exactions of his Breton ally, Philip Augustus offered Abbot Jordan a grant for the construction of a new Gothic architectural set which included the addition of the refectory and cloister.

Charles VI is credited with adding major fortifications to the abbey-mount, building towers, successive courtyards, and strengthening the ramparts.
