Melbourne's vintage underworld...

Excited about displaying at Bricktastic in Manchester this August. Her's a quick MOC inspired by the event logo.

peggyjdb Henry Morgan: Welsh Raider of the Spanish Main is a LEGO model about the infamous buccaneers raid on Lake Maracaibo in 1669.

Henry Morgan was born in around 1635 in Llanrhymny, which is now part of Cardiff. How ended up in Jamaica twenty years later is uncertain, but when he was there he forged a career as the most successful buccaneer the world had ever seen. In the pay of the English government, he raided the Spanish Main and disrupted their shipping, amassing enormous personal wealth in the process. At home, he was a hero, being knighted in 1674 and holding the office of Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica on several occasions. To the Spanish he was no more than a pirate, whose activity sat well outside of the rule of law. He died on August 25th 1688 having played a major role in setting the unfolding American geo-political scene.

The model is a Brick to the Past creation built by Dan Harris, James Pegrum, Simon Pickard, and Colin Parry. It was unveiled for the first time at the Bricktastic in July 2018 and went on display again at The Great Western Brick Show in October.

Built for Bricktastic in Manchester last weekend. It's a show with lots of children, all for the UK charity Fairy Bricks. I was part of New Elementary's display basically showing off some lovely LEGO COLOURS.

Set Name: Gatehouse Raid

Set Number: 70402

Year Released: 2013

Recommended Retail Price: $29.99, £24.99

Number of Pieces: 248

Number of Minifigures: 4 (1 Lion knight, 1 Lion soldier, 1 Dragon knight, 1 Dragon soldier) + 1 animal (1 horse)

General Review:

I found this set pretty enjoyable to build. It has instructions that are simple to follow, though I think there may be a mistake in the first couple of pages (not a big deal). The figures are great, as they are in the Forest Ambush. Two knights are included, one for both sides, with the Dragon knight having a nice black pointed sword, which looks much better than the Lion knight's short round-ended one. The two soldiers included both wield spears, one dark and one light grey. The only figure to have a double-sided gead is the Dragon knight, though it is hard to notice the change when he's wearing his helmet. I was very pleased when I found that LEGO had included an extra dark spear, light spear and short sword. These spares really help to build up your armoury!

The main playable feature of the set is the Dragon catapult. It is very simply made, but for kids this won't matter a bit. It has the nice red/black colour scheme and two transparent orange bricks for firing at the gatehouse. It rolls along easily and can fire quite a way.

The main part of the set is the gatehouse, which looks really good. The official set pictures can be slighty misleading as the gates and crossbow both look dark grey when the gates are really black and the crossbow is actually light grey. It may just be my eyesight! There is an arch above the gates that is tall enough for the Dragon knight and his great-looking horse to fit under. This is good for kids who want to make the 'bad guys' get into the castle, but ti does mean a large, empty space is left above the gates.

To the left of the gates is a small, detachable jail. It is big enough to fit a minifigure inside, and the small gate is dark grey with a nice golden keyhole. Above the jail is a 'wooden' slanted roof with space to fit battling knights.

On the right side of the gates is another detachable building that's almost identicle to the jail. There is an open window with a grey crossbow that soldiers can 'fire' at the enemy. Suprisingly for a LEGO set there's no flick missile included.

Above the gates and archway is a tower that features a mini catapult and room on top to fit minifigs. The catapult fires relatively well and has three grey pieces to launch at the Dragons. The top part of the tower has a Lion shield facing forward and a gold nugget above. I'm guessing that the gold is what the Dragon warriors are after. There is space enough for soldiers to battle at the top.

Ok guys, its rating time!

Kid's rating: 9/10

Teenager's rating: 8/10

Adult's rating: 8/10

Well, in my opinion this is a very fun set for kids to play with, as they will enjoy the great minifigs and play features. Anyone who's into LEGO fantasy and castles will also love the minifigs included. Some nice pieces come with the set (see here), and the price is very decent. I would definately recommend it!

Brick to the Past's 2017 build - The Jacobite Risings.

Last weekend Lego Dan was at Bricktastic with his Brick to the Past bros and their epic new collab The Jacobite Risings: The Fight for Britain's Throne. Part of the model is a one metre high mountain built by James Pegrum, which he of course had to climb.

Can you spot what he's doing wrong here? Well firstly, dry tooling, or LEGO tooling when it's ABS on ABS action is a big ethical no-no. Having said that, if you are going to do it at least do it with two axes. Secondly, your rope is a safety item used to protect you and your partner best used when tied to your harness. Holding it one hand and waving it around while you climb kind of defeats its point.

On the other hand, Lego Dan does at least look he's having a great time, the big showboater.

Brick to the Past's 2017 build - The Jacobite Risings.

The Jacobite Risings: The Fight for Britain’s Throne is a LEGO model of a series of uprisings, rebellions and wars that occurred predominantly in Scotland, but also spread into Ireland and England, between 1689 and 1746. Following the deposition of James II of England and VII of Scotland in the Glorious Revolution, the aims of the risings were to return the Stuart monarch, and later his descendants, to the thrones of England and Scotland (and after 1707, the Kingdom of Great Britain). They take their name from Jacobus, the Latin form of James.

While conflict broke out in 1689, 1715, and 1719, the most famous rising is probably the last, that of 1745. During the “Forty-five" Charles Edward Stuart, also known as the Young Pretender or Bonnie Prince Charlie, led an army from the Scottish Highlands as far south as Derby before retreating north to be decisively defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Culloden was the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil and marked the end of any serious attempt to restore the house of Stuart to the throne.

Project to build a LEGO model of Rainbow Dash.

Progress has been steady over the last few months. Her wings are now completed, as are the internal structure of her torso, legs and tail. Only her neck, head and mane are left to design.

And I now have a target date to work towards! LEGO Dash will be appearing at 'Bricktastic' LEGO show in Manchester on the first weekend of July this year! So I'll be kept busy for the next 10 weeks or so getting her done.

Here's a teaser for this year's Brick to the Past model, which will first be displayed next weekend at Bricktastic.

This year we're exploring the rich history of Anglo-Saxon England. Of course, where there are Anglo-Saxons, there are going to be Vikings too. And where there are Vikings, there are boats... lots of them!

Following Bricktastic the model will be on display over the summer at the Rheged Centre in Penrith. Finally, we will be taking it to Swindon's Great Western Brick Show in October.
