In the life of Beijing, the siheyuan were fundamental units and joined forming communities of neighbors, along narrow alleys called hutongs. They are still the heart of the city, and the current, provide fleeting screenshots of old Beijing, from the sellers of tofu and soy sauce that push their cars for the alleys, up to the chess tournaments in front of the doors open.

The Hutong are one of the symbols of Beijing with a history of more than 700 years. Indeed, the Hutong were built under the Yuan dynasty. The name Hutong is a Mongolian word, which means the well (худаг, khudag). Water has always been an important part of everyday life, so residences were built according to available wells. Little by little the Hutong formed, gathering several alleys.
