Basil
This aromatic plant, basil, is passionately cultivated by Genoese and is the essential ingredient of the Ligurian salsa called “PESTO”. (Green sauce with basil, garlic, pine-nuts, Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese and Parmesan, and virgin olive oil. All ingredients which should be ground in a marble mortar with a wooden pestle, hence the name)
It is not enough to say basil to make good pesto. It is essential know where it comes from.
Basil must, at the very least, be grown near the sea; that grown inland, worse still if it comes from the other side of the Apennines, tastes of mint. And that is the worst definition for basil: to taste of mint!!
In this photo basil cultivated in my garden.

My wife and I always look forward to that time of year when we do some gardening. This year, our pots of basil are already going like gang-busters, so I thought I'd make a photo one recent overcast day.

“One of the greatest gifts we receive from dogs is the tenderness they evoke in us. The disappointments of life, the injustices, the battering events that are beyond our control, and the betrayals we endure, from those we befriended and loved, can make us cynical and turn our hearts into flint – on which only the matches of anger and bitterness can be struck into flame. By their delight in being with us, the reliable sunniness of their disposition, the joy they bring to playtime, the curiosity with which they embrace each new experience, dogs can melt cynicism, and sweeten the bitter heart.”

Basil hides behind a leaf. This shot was kind of inspired by another work by William Wegman, called Green Beret

TRF: Basil's collar broke at daycare and I haven't had time to go get him a new one. I am so afraid that he somehow gets away and is later found without any identification!

I've harvested most of my Genovese Basil and have frozen it into pesto base. So now, all that left to do is wait until they've all gone to seed (happening) and then dry out (not happening) so that I can harvest them for next year's crop! I still have a couple of varietals to harvest too, purple basil, thai basil, and an unidentified kind (another type of thai basil?), not quite sure. Happy harvesting and Happy Bokeh Wednesday!!!

No cupcakes were hurt in the making of this picture! I was stumped this week for 52 weeks and Anda said I should have Zap help with baking or blame the mess on Basil. SO here is my little weirdling helper! We're making guiness stout cupcakes with maple buttercream and candied bacon
Thought I would put up 2 fox pictures to compare Basil and Ted just face view at the moment but I will do body shots as well.
From a month ago. Basil was harder to photograph than Big Ears and Torn ear in 2010. He was much more nervy and often had his ears flat whereas Big Ears was so brazen and turned up several times right beside me while I was photographing bugs.
