Dear Flickr friends, I created a "making of" using my full size 30X40 and 40X70 photos that will be at the group exhibition that I wil take part in at the Central Bank Exibition Hall on July 3rd.

No. It's not NY. It is Lima, Perú. ^^

This Banco Santander branch is across from Plaza de Armas.

The building at the corner of Plaza Muñoz Gamero and Roca³ was built in 1900 from a design by Antonio Beaulier.

Among other Punta Arenas buildings Beaulier designed are Palacio Braun-Menéndez and Residencia Blanchard, the white-fronted building at the left of this photo.

The bank opened in 1901 as a Punta Arenas branch of the Bank of Tarapacá and London.

1930 the building became Banco Central de Chile.

Subsequently it became offices of the General Treasury of the Republic and successively Banco de Santiago, Banco O’Higgins and currently, Banco Santander.

MORE BUILDING TRIVIA:

The British Club:

The British Association of Magallanes, or "British Club" as it was popularly known, was founded 3rd May 1899. The Club's premises were located in the upper floor of the former Bank of Tarapaca and London building.

Membership was restricted to British males, generally of the upper class. Its premises were furnished in the plush style of a gentleman's club, complete with bar, library and billiard tables. They were well patronised, both by local businessmen, and by ranch-owners and managers on their periodic visits into town.

As the British presence in Magallanes started to decline, the Club began to admit Chileans, provided they spoke English.

Later, Spanish-only speakers of British descent were admitted. By the early 1950s, the organization had lost its vitality, and membership continued to dwindle.

In 1981, the Bank of Chile closed the premises, confiscated the contents in lieu of arrears of rent and the Club ceased to exist.

La Paz was founded on October 20, 1548 by the Spanish conquistador Captain Alonso de Mendoza at the site of the Inca settlement of Laja as a connecting point between the commercial routes that led from Potosí and Oruro to Lima; the full name of the city was originally Nuestra Señora de La Paz (meaning Our Lady of Peace) in commemoration of the restoration of peace following the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro and fellow conquistadors against the first viceroy of Peru.

The city was later moved to its present location in the valley of Chuquiago Marka. La Paz was under Spanish colonial rule as part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, before Bolivia gained independence. Since its founding, the city was the site of numerous revolts. In 1781, the indigenous leader and independence activist Túpac Katari laid siege to the city for a total of six months, but was finally defeated. On July 16, 1809 the Bolivian patriot Pedro Domingo Murillo ignited a revolution for independence, marking the beginning of the Spanish American Wars of Independence, which gained the freedom of South American states in 1821.

History of Money.

The history of money begins around the 7th century BC with the first coinage of money. Money is any clearly identifiable object of value that is generally accepted for the payment of goods, services and debts in a market or what is legal tender within a country.

At the beginning of history there were no coins or bills, people practiced barter or exchange. For example: You gave a fish in exchange for a hen.

Later, as societies developed, needs increased, so it became necessary to have a more practical and comfortable means of exchange than bartering. Grains of cacao, oysters, salt, precious metals such as gold or silver were used.

For that reason the metal coin was invented, and soon paper money, (ticket). It has obligatory acceptance, that all the people must use them within each Country, to pay or to charge.

Banco Central (Madrid, Enero' 2020)

Banco de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

... 'a fistful of dollars', so to speak

Ecuadorian centavo coins were introduced in 2000 when Ecuador converted its currency from the sucre to the U.S. dollar. The coins are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos . They circulate within Ecuador alongside coins and banknotes from the USA. Ecuadorian centavos bear the numeric value along with the value spelled out in Spanish, and the legend of the Banco Central del Ecuador; the reverse is printed with the portrait and name of a notable Ecuadorian, the legend "República del Ecuador" and the country's coat of arms.
