Throughout the July 4th weekend hot-air balloonists from all over the country converged on our region to float en masse above the Hudson River.
The launches take off from the banks of the Hudson River soon after sunrise and before sunset.

Bagan, Myanmar. Sunrise from a hot air balloon, floating over thousands of ancient temples. A morning i'll never forget in one of the most amazing places i'll ever go.
Bagan is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Burma. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom to unify the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar.

The Michigan Challenge Balloonfest is an annual hot air balloon festival established in 1984 and held in Howell, One of the favorite events of the festival is held late on Saturday night each year, the balloon night glow. Thanks again to my good friend Phil Odum for the great parking spot....I would have never made it on time...Thanks Phil
A beautiful crisp clear morning in the Scenic Rim watching the Hot Air Balloons prepare for a flight. A great way to start the day. This shot taken just outside of the town of Beaudesert in Southeast Queensland.

25th Prosser Balloon Rally
Only one to make the water on the first day!
Several months ago i was lucky enough to go ballooning over the Hunter Valley at sunrise. The adjacent balloon had inflated and was ready for lift off. More to come.
I wasn't very pleased with the glow this year, they had way to many stadium lights on to be able to see the balloons glow nicely. This is the best glow show I could get compared to the nice ones last year.
Playing with photoshop. I cut and pasted the balloons. 3 are from the Balloon Fest held in Glendale, AZ. last year, one was a balloon that went up the same morning as ours and the pink and blue one was the one we were in. The background is a picture taken of the countryside by my son, Scot, when he was stationed TDY in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

This was one of the many tens of balloons which went up into the air. You can see the feeding flames there as the folks waved to us all.

To show how magical; we were standing near Dave's house while he told us how they sometimes launch balloons from a nearby farm ... when suddenly he shouted, "Balloons are launching!" We all made a pell-mell dash across the highway and into the back field of the farm, where, sure enough, three gigantic baloons were on the verge of lifting off.
I've never seen hot air balloons up close before. They're gigantic! It's a real task to try to capture the sheer size of them, and we didn't have much time as they lifted off pretty soon after we arrived. But it sure was fun trying.
Much of the day was like this. Wherever we went we saw something cool. More to come!
The view from my basket (you can just see the elbow of my companion on the left), as we descended into the vineyard. What a ride!
I attacked this image from a few different angles (single file HDR; DxO Film Pack) but decided I liked this simpler approach (still complex)--single file, processed in ACR and Perfect Effects 8, then selectively enhanced in Nik Viveza. Shooting into a sunset and trying to get detail and color in near side objects can be tough.
