Type genus.—Ehipicephalus. This subfamily contains tiie genera lihipicejjhalus^ BoopMlu^^ Ilwma^physails^ and Derwacentor. (For analytical key, see p. 385.) Genus Rhipicephalus ^ Koch, 1844. Generic diagnosis.—RMpicephallnx: Eyes distinct; base of capitulum broader than long, hexagonal on dorsal surface, forming at each side a projecting angle. Palpi short, broad; third article prolonged on its dorsal surface by a short retrograde point; first article by an internal (median) lobe, occasionally not dis- tinct, and slightly retrograde. Coxa; I with two generally large teeth. Stigmata in form of a comma, with short tail in the female, long tail in the male. Male with two pairs of anal shields (clypei): (1) One pair of large adanal shields placed at each side of the anus, triangular or occasionally rectangular; (2) one pair of smaller shields lateral of these. Type species.—R. sanguineus (Latreille).

144 Gallmücken beschädigt war. Fig. 19, nach einer Photographie aus- geführt, zeigt einen pyramidalen Wachholder von Langö bei Holme- Btrand im Christiania-Fjord(59°30'). Derselbe hat eine Höhe von 22' (6.9m), und die Krone, die wie man sieht bis zur Erde reicht, unten einen Diameter von 10'(3.1m). Auch auf diesem findet man die oft be- rührten Schuppen. In Bezug auf die Grösse, wel- che der Wachholder in Norwegen erreichen kann, dürfte es muh ihm Angeführten hinreichend sein Fol- gendes zu bemerken: Auf dem Hofe Hohl in Haaböl Kirchspiel (59° 36* N. B. 28° 35' Ã. L.) steht ein Wachholder, den ich zweimal mes- sen Hess. Der Baum hat eine Höhe von 25' (7.8m.) und der Stamm, bis zum ersten Zweige 6\2' (2m) hoch, hält zwei Fuss über der Erde 7' 1" (2.5m) im Umfang. Der Durch- messer der Krone ist respective 24'/2' und 26'/â' (7.6â8.3m.). Fig. 20 stellt diesen in seiner Art merk- würdigen Baum dar. Der höchste Wachholder in Norwegen war aber wahrscheinlich der, welcher 1872 bei dem Hofe Skjeldaas an der Ostseite des Sörfjord in Hardanger (60° 10' N. B. 24° 16' Ã. L.) gefällt wurde. Die Höhe desselben war etwas über 40' (12.5m), während hingegen der Umfang am Boden nur 50" (1.3m.) betrug. Schuppen nach der Gallmücke fanden sich ganz bis zum Gipfel. Die Vermessung geschah gleich; darauf wurde der Stamm zu Brettern zersägt, und aus diesen machte man Milchgefässe. Das Alter des Baumes kann ich nicht angeben. Fin ähnlicher Baum steht noch in der Nähe mit einer Höhe von 35â36' (ungefähr lim). Im Jahre 1872 zeigte derselbe einen Umfang von nur 27" (71cm.). Sechs Fuss (1.9m.) von der Erde ist der Umfang 22" (58cm.), 10' (3.1m.) von der Wurzel 19" (50cm.) und bei 20' (6.3m.) nur 12" (31cm.). Auch dieser ist ganz bis zur Spitze mit Schuppen besetzt. Leicht verständlich müssen, nach dem Angeführten, in unserem noch so unvollständig durchforschten Noryregen, viele ähnliche Wachholder vorkommen. Es sei mir erlaubt noch einen zu berühren, der auf dem Hofe Möen in Voss Kirchspiel (60° 38' N. B. 24° 12' ö. Li zu finden ist. Im Sommer 1871 zeigte derselbe eine Höhe (DâT) von 38' (11.9m.). Der Stamm, der bis zur Kr (B) IG' (3.1m) hoch ist, hält am Boden (D) 23" (60cm.) im Diameter, bei 5 Fuss 1 1 â¢' %" 13 â i. bei 10 Fuss (B) 11«/," (30cm.), bei 15 Fuss (A) 8'/«" (22cm.), und in einer Höhe v°n 20 ' i. Der Baum, von völlig frischem Aussehen, hatte in dem genannten Sommer 4â5" (10â13cm.) am Gipfel zugenommen. Der ganzen Krone entlang kom- men die oft genannten Schuppen vor. 82 Zweites Kapitel: Die chemischen Reaktionen im lebenden Pflanzenorganismus. VAN 't Hoff bemerkt selbst, daß in der großen Mehrheit der bisher beobachteten Fälle das Geschwindigkeitsverhältnis für 10 mit steigender Temperatur abnimmt. Ähnliches beobachtete man auch bei physiologischen Vorgängen bereits innerhalb der unschädlichen Tempe- raturen in der Regel sehr deutlich, was, wie Cohen-Stuart d) mit Recht hervorhebt, meist absichtlich oder unabsichtlich unbeachtet ge- lassen wird, und durchaus keine Abweichung von der RGT.-Regel dar- stellt. Nach Cohen-Stuart wäre es vorzuziehen nicht die Q^o-Werte direkt zu vergleichen, sondern die Kurven, die sich aus der Veränder- lichkeit derselben mit steigender Temperatur ergeben. Dabei zeigen die Lebensvorgänge sehr häufig ein Verhalten, welches an- scheinend der Temperatur-Proportionalitätsregel widerspricht. Es nimmt nämhch die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit nur bis etwa 33—Sö^C mit der Temperatur zu, erreicht da ihr Maximum und sinkt sodann herab, um mit Eintritt des Hitzetodes bei 41—45«C den Nullpunkt zu erreichen. Dieses sogenannte „Temperaturoptimum ist zuerst durch Blackman(2) mit seinen Mitarbeitern Miss Matthaei und Smith in seinem Zustande- kommen aufgeklärt worden. Außerdem fördernden Einfluß auf die Geschwindig- keit der Reaktionen in der lebenden Zelle werden seitens der steigenden Temperatur immer auch Prozesse be- schleunigt, welche mit einer Herab- setzung der Funktionen verbunden sind, mit Stoff zerfall ohne ausreichenden Er- satz. Mit diesen Einflüssen muß sich die RGT.-Regel kreuzen. Je schneller z. B. der Vorrat an den zur Atmung nötigen Stoffen bei höherer Tempera- „. „ tur sich vermindert, desto weniger ^^' ' kann sich die Reaktionsbeschleuni- gung des Oxydationsprozesses selbst bemerklich machen. Drücken wir die Quantität der zur Atmung nötigen Stoffe in ihrer Abnahme mit steigender Temperatur durch die Kurve AB aus, die RGT.-Regel der Atmung durch die Kurve OP, so sehen wir ohne weiteres, wie durch Superposition beider Kurven in C ein Temperaturoptimum entstehen muß, obwohl die Atmung der RGT-Regel folgt. Ein wirkliches Optimum existiert somit nicht. Die von Amstel und Iterson(3) gegen Blackmans Auffassungen erhobenen Bedenken sind wohl grundlos und wurden hinreichend durch die Untersuchungen von Kuyper (4) entkräftet. Cohen-Stuart und Kanitz ist jedoch vollkommen zuzustimmen in der Meinung, daß eine exakte Prüfung der BLACKMANSchen Theorie derzeit unmöglich ist, weil die Abhängigkeit der Einzelprozesse von der Temperatur physiologisch unentwirrbare Komplexe darstellt. 1) C. 33 der Hauptsache erklärt. Ich gebe diese Erklärung indess nur als eine nicht unwahrscheinliche Annahme. Eine erschöpfende Untersuchung der Oscillationen lag nicht in meiner Absicht; ich habe dieselben nur darum berücksichtigen müssen, weil sie bei meinen heliotropischen Versuchen eine Quelle von Täuschungen bilden konnten und mich anfänglich auch thatsächlich irre führten. Die Oscillationen bei der heliotropischen Krümmung sind nicht auf die Cotyledonen der hier betrachteten Oramineen-Specieä beschränkt; ich be- obachtete sie vielmehr, mehr oder weniger ausgesprochen, auch bei ver- schiedenen anderen Keimlingen, so bei denen der Paniceen und mancher Dicotylen; doch scheint meist die Periode einer Oscillation erheblich grösser zu sein als bei Avena. Ein Object, wo die besagten Oscillationen eine sehr bedeutende Amplitude erreichen und daher sehr auffallen, sind beispiels- weise junge Hypocotyle von Agrostemma Oithago (welche im Dunkeln ebenfalls stark circumnutiren). Um nicht nochmals auf diesen nicht zu meinem eigentlichen Thema gehörigen, aber jedenfalls beachtenswerthen Gegenstand zurückkommen zu müssen, will ich an dieser Stelle anch gleich über die an Agrostemma gemachten Beobachtungen berichten. Hier wird bei der heliotropischen Krümmung zunächst im Laufe weniger Stunden eine starke Neigung des Obertheils erreicht, welcher sich aber dabei nicht oder nur in geringer Ausdehnung geradestreckt (Fig. 9, a). Il suo colore è color nocciuola pallido uniforme. Con tale genere di vita le larve della 2' generazione compiono il loro sviluppo. Il Costa ritiene che una larva possa danneggiare una ventina di bocci fiorali però io credo che tale numero sia un po' esagerato. Le larve (Fig. 20-21) quando sono grandicelle di 4-5 mm. legano insieme con fili di seta anche varii bocci, tra i quali quelli consumati neir interno compaiono secchi, e in tale groviglio essa si trova riparata nel passare da un boccio ad un altro. Le larve di questa generazione cominciano a raggiungere il loro completo sviluppo verso la fine di Maggio e in gran parte nella prima quindicina di Giugno. Tessono il loro boz- zolo sugli stessi racemi fiorali e dopo 5-6 giorni si trasformano in adulti. Questi depositano le uova sul calice dei giovani frutti o su qualunque parte del frutto stesso. In serra su olivi non aventi racemi fruttiferi, li ho visti depositare sulle foglie. Le larve della se- conda generazione sono quelle , che si sviluppano in un periodo di tempo minore tanto di quello impiegato dalle larve della prima che di quello impiegato dalle larve della seconda.
