A few km from Landmannalaugar, on the road F208 from Eldgjá, we saw this wonderful view.

I love the iPad 2....but the resolution is just not there. Cottonwood tree and snow storm on the way.

From an RTE news report this morning: Storm force winds and high tides are forecast to bring one of the strongest storms of the winter over the next two days. Flood barriers have been put in place, and sailors and fishermen have been warned about conditions on the Irish Sea. A band of exceptionally low pressure is expected to bring severe winds - particularly in the south of the country.

UPDATE Sunday night. The rain and gales have arrived in Dublin, bashing off the front of our house. The Met Office rainfall radar shows that almost the entire country is being lashed by rain.

Monday morning: The worst of the weather seems to have hit south-west England rather than Ireland.

Monday night: The forecasters say there will be very strong winds which will ease for a time, but then there will be severe gales with storm gusts later on Tuesday

Tuesday: Tonight will be very windy with widespread gales. Winds will reach storm force across much of the north and west with severe or violent gusts in parts of Ulster north Connacht and north Leinster. Squally showers will affect all areas and will be heaviest and most frequent in the north and northwest with falls of hail. Some sleet is also possible on northern hills. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees with frost in sheltered areas.

Digital collage, drawing and processing

The ship is the Matthew, a replica of John Cabot's Matthew which he sailed from Bristol to North America (presumably Newfoundland) in 1497. We see her in Falmouth (and in her home port of Bristol) fairly often. The background map is from a calendar I was given for Christmas, I have no idea whether the date of the a map is anything like similar to that of the ship but I do like the combination of the two...

HSS!

This was one of the first good shots id taken with my linhof. It was freezing cold and the 12 apostles on the other side were being lit up with rainbows in the sky... while I got this more mediocre shot at Gibson's steps. I haveta say I prefer it more because it is not a commonly seen perspective of the 12 apostles, and I like the way the water is misty and the different colours have been picked up by the clouds. I think it looks a little fake or HDR like, but its just had some light edits to try and make the rocks more bright in comparison to the sky... i'll see what people's reactions are.

Second image in the storm series. A view of the approaching storm that hit Cape Cod last week taken from the boardwalk at Grey's Beach in Yarmouth Port. Shortly after this image was taken, several large lightning bolts struck not too, too far away...I ran as fast as I could to my car but there were people still on the boardwalk, some with children...apparently unaware of how dangerous the situation was. From here, I drove to Eastham...hoping for a rainbow!

A wet and windy weather front is approaching. Here's the precursor

I found this spot while researching a guide to photography at Mono Lake (I'm still working on the draft). I've been driving by the lake for decades, but while researching the book I got to know Mono Lake's story. Home to 2 million birds that use the brine shrimp and alkali flies as a critical food source, the lake is a critical breeding and migration stop. Approximately 90% of California's gulls are hatched and raised here.

Water diversions since 1941 to feed development in the desert suburbs surrounding Los Angeles have drawn down the lake significantly. As the water level dropped, the lake has grown in salinity to become 3 times saltier than the ocean, and the population of alkali flies has plummeted. Los Angeles has already drained Owens Lake completely dry (it's now a dust bowl), and the mighty Colorado River is now pumped dry before it reaches the Gulf of California.

Urban planners are allowing growth that will drive state's population to grow by tens of millions more by 2020, while climate scientists are forecasting the demise of the Sierra snowpack and the dessication of California's lands due to climate change. California's lack of growth controls are going to cause enormous water shortage and social issues, and the knee-jerk reactions to pursue the dwindling water resources for residential and agricultural use will fuel environmental disasters.

If I had a choice between experiencing an outdoor weather storm, and a storm within my life, I think I will choose the outdoor one!

When I took this shot, the sun was still high in the sky, but light was already particular.

Approaching storm. The tide was coming in and I was worried about being cut off.
