this cute little flower measures just 1/10th of an inch across (less than 3mm). the little inflorescences that bear a single flower each appear along the length of the long (up to about 3ft long) stems giving the impression the plant is infected by some kind of thread-like fungus.

 

photographed this next to a stream in the jungle. it was really quite a challenge to photograph something this small without a tripod while standing on slippery river rocks!

Update: This was previously posted and mistaken as Appendicula undulata var. longicalcarata.

 

Dendrobium rosellum – The pink spotted dendrobium.

 

An orchid with very small flowers of about 1cm. It is found in Sabah, Borneo, Penninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, at elevations of 800 etres to 1,100 meters. It is an epiphyte with branched stems carrying many leaves. The inflorescence grow from the leafless sections of the stem and bears a flower each.

They conclu-sively prove, that sedentary employments tend tocause it, while active, out-ot-door occupation opposesit, for among students, printers, shoemakers, and mer-chants, fifty per cent, of the insanity arises from mastur-bation, but only twelve per cent from intemperance.Among carpenters, blacksmiths, and others who are ac-tively employed, thirty-live per cent, arises fromperance, and only thirteen from masturbation. Amongseamen, fifty-four per oent. of the insanity is caused byintemperance, and only eleven per cent, from solitaryabuse. Parents, therefore, after they have given their sonsthe proper advice, should allow them to choose theirown employment, and not confine a sanguine tempera-ment, requiring mental and muscular occupation of themost- varied kind, to an office or counting-house, nor a PLATE 23.
