Sweet Appam / Wheat flour appam recipe is usually prepared on festive occasions like Karthigai Deepam, Krishna Jayanthi, Avani Avittam etc. But to taste this delicious sweet, festival should not be a reason. As it is very easy to prepare, and almost all the ingredients are readily available in our kitchen, we can make it any time instantly. It is a healthy sweet as the ingredients call for wheat flour and banana and it is not a deep fried one, so even elders can have it without any guilt. Instead of giving store bought junk food to our kids, we can prepare this homemade appam and serve them without any worry.
Nei appam (Ghee Appam) is actually made from grinding rice with grated coconut, added jaggery and fried in ghee generously. As the name calls for Nei Appam, the whole flavour of the appam comes from ghee only, so leave about calories for a day and try this delicious Nei appam recipe for this karthigai deepam. It is also called as Unni Appam in kerala. Try this karthigai appam for neivedhyam tomorrow and wish you all a happy karthigai deepam.
- 2 cups rice
- 1/2 cup cooked rice
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon yeast
- Soak 2 cups of rice in cold water in the morning
- In the evening, first activate yeast by mixing with luke warm water and maple syrup
- Blend the 2 cups soaked rice, 1/2 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup coconut milk, and water to the level of the soaked rice
- Add the activated yeast to the batter and let it ferment over night.
- In the morning, add 1/2 tsp. salt and mix the batter. Add more water if batter is too thick
- Make piping hot appams in either an appam pan or a small non-stick frying pan. Cover the pan while the appam is cooking.

For Soft and tasty appam, you need to add coconut milk and ferment it for a long time ( 18 hrs). Children will love its taste. You can cook and serve appam to the guest who comes to your house.
தேவையான பொருட்கள் (Ingredients):
பச்சரிசி (Raw rice)- 2 cups (500gm)
வெள்ளை உருட்டு உளுந்து ( Urad Dhal) - 2 Tbsp
வெந்தயம் (Fenugreek) - 1/4 spoon
தேங்காய் (Coconut) - 1 cup
சர்க்கரை (Sugar) - 2 Tbsp
உப்பு (Salt) - 1 Tbsp
வடித்த சாதம் (Rice) - 1/4 cup
தோசை மாவு (Dosa batter) - 1 cup
செய்முறை ( Method):
1. Add Raw rice, urad dhal and fenugreek together and soak for 4 hours.
2. Add the above-said ingredients in a bowl and grind it in to smooth paste.
3. Stir gently and add salt.
4. Ferment for a minimum of 18 hours.
5. Then add the necessary amount of water.
6. Put some batter into the pan.
7. Add 1/4 spoon of oil.
8. Close and cook it for1.5 minutes.
