San Francisco sure is beautiful from above. Karl the Fog nails it every time!

Found this previous trip photo that was taken in Cappadocia, Turkey, while I was riding on hot air ballon. Such aerial view of Cappadocia really amazed me, the haze just standing above the mountain like leaving a piece of lace over the mountains, and the light of sunrise gave the details of the mountain veins.
That's Santa Cruz Island which is off the coast of California... Somehow, the island looks a bit like a scorpion... :)
Have a fabulous day, dear friends...
The oil-shale bings of West Lothian
The shale bings of West Lothian are large heaps of spoil, between 30 and 90 metres high; the waste material from an industrial process to retort crude oil (paraffin) from deep mined oil-bearing shale. The process was developed and patented by James "Paraffin" Young in 1851 and for a few years Scotland was the major oil-producing nation of the world.
In the UK, shale bings are found only in the county of West Lothian, Scotland. There are 19 bings still existing; they have been unworked from between 87 and 43 years. The industrial exploitation of oil-bearing rocks has created a unique landscape with its own distinctive flora and fauna.
The ecology and biodiversity of the bing sites make them ideal for describing and monitoring the processes and mechanisms of vegetation dynamics over a wide range of conditions. They provide an insight into the best-suited ecosystem structures for similar sites in other countries.
Shale bings are of great ecological and scientific importance as examples of primary succession. They provide a refuge for locally rare species, both plant and animal, in an agricultural landscape and are therefore also important to conservation and increased local biodiversity. Addiewell bing is an SWT nature reserve.
Flying over an island of Okinawa, Japan (June 2007)
Okinawa Prefecture (沖縄県, Japanese: Okinawa-ken, Okinawan: Uchinaa-ken) is one of Japan's southern prefectures, and consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 km long, which extends southwest from Kyūshū (the southwesternmost of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan. Okinawa's capital, Naha, is located in the southern part of the largest and most populous island, Okinawa Island, which is approximately half-way between Kyūshū and Taiwan. The disputed Senkaku Islands (Mandarin: Diaoyu Islands) are also administered as part of Okinawa Prefecture at present.
Location: Somewhere over the East China Sea on my way from Osaka to Singapore.

The lines in this aerial show where freight used to pass through Vancouver from the West across False Creek on the CPR Railway trestle that used to be between the two bridges and to the South. You can see how the docks in False Creek are lined up to accomodate the old trestle.
Explored!
Happy 75th Anniversary to the Golden Gate Bridge!

This is an section of the Grand Canyon from about 35,000 feet. We went over it on a trip to Las Vegas. Never being on the west coast, I was amazed to see the difference in landscape. Being one of the greatest landscapes in the world, this stood out when passing over.
This photo was the grand prize winner in a National Geographic photography contest on Instagram called #viewfromabovecontest. I won a trip to Southeast Asia visiting Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
