A detailed image of the Apotekergata, central Ålesund, Norway.
One of my holiday pictures I hadn't posted before. I saw it today while looking through the pictures and thought "this is Flickr worthy". Here the Jugendstil houses, which were built after the great Ålesund town blaze, can be viewed in detail.

The core of the city and the harbour, with a small round island (upper right) which is crowned by a cloud and resembles an American president whose name escapes me.
Ålesund is a town and municipality in Norway. (Check out the Geotag - its really out in Atlantic ocean)
Night January 23, 1904 Ålesund burned down. The city, which at that time were built of wood burned down to the ground. The population had to flee in the middle of the night with just a few minutes credited. Only one person died in the fire, but more than 10 000 people were left without shelter in the middle of the cold Norwegian winter. Wilhelm II of Germany used to spend holiday in Ålesund.
After the fire, he sent four ships with materials to build temporary shelters. After a period rebuilt the city of stone, brick and concrete in the Art Nouveau style, which is known for its towers, steeples and decorative trim.
