This Big Boy was defending his turf against three Hummers who wanted to share breakfast.
Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds with iridescent feathers. Their name comes from the fact that they flap their wings so fast (about 80 times per second) that they make a humming noise.
Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. They are also able to hover by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern.
They have a specialized long and tapered bill that is used to obtain nectar from the center of long, tubular flowers.
The hummingbird’s feet are used for perching only, and are not used for hopping or walking.
Hummingbirds primarily eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen.
The hummingbird’s fast breathing rate, fast heartbeat and high body temperature require that they eat often. They also require an enormous amount of food each day.
Hummingbirds have a long tongue which they use to lick their food at a rate of up to 13 licks per second.
It is difficult to estimate population numbers since there are many different species spanning a large geographic area.
Hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere, from southeastern Alaska to southern Chile, although most live in the tropics. There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds, 12 of which summer in North America and winter in tropical areas.
Like other birds, hummingbirds communicate via visual displays. Hummingbirds are very territorial and have been observed chasing each other and even larger birds such as hawks away from their territories.
Gestation: 13-22 days.

Some beautiful light across Roseberry Topping and Teesside today prompted me to take this 6 shot panorama. It was quite a trek to get there as the sun was setting and as usual Lady Roseberry was choc a bloc with hikers and families out enjoying the snow. I'm just glad there was enough of the white stuff still hanging around - I've been trying to get a decent snow shot in my photostream for ages....
Hope you like.

I'm not sure what happened here - I was setting up the camera for reflections of the sunset on the water when this fellow walked into the scene. I grabbed a few quick shots before he left and wound up with these heavily saturated colors. It's over the top but I liked the color transition of the bluer water in the foreground to the orange in the background.
Harris Checkerspot butterfly taking nectar from a cluster of Dogwood florets.
Considered habitat limited and rare. Found in calcareous fens and bogs, its caterpillar overwinters at the base of its host plant, the flat topped daisy. As such, it's vulnerable to fire.

During my 2009 Jackson Hole, WY photo shoot, I decided to take off one day out of my 9 day trip and head down to see Square Top Mountain in the Wind River Range.
That year, I arrived a little early because I wanted to beat the massive amount of mosquitoes in early July and I mean massive !!
This will not be on my list of places to shoot during my 2012 Jackson Hole, WY wildflower photo shoot as the trip would consume more than half the day if one were to also stay to shoot a sunset here which I would definitely want to do as the lake becomes glass like around that time.
Thanks for stopping by.

I am so excited right now about this "fooling around with my hand-dyed fabrics", I just have to share this with you. I have never done anything like this, but I had the best of time sewing this top. Now it's time to quilt, which I hope will be fun too.
The top is 33"x 38" and all fabrics are hand-dyed by me, they are all part of my very first batch of dyed fabrics.

When I first seen this reservoir, I thought it was an enchanted pool because of all the white rocks surrounding it.
The last of three images of the "Top of Troy" building in Troy, MI... a suburb of Detroit.
After a quick lift, you get the best possible view of the city.
An around space at the top of the building with a split opening in the glasswall, it's easy to take pictures like this.
I strongly advice you to book in advance, because it's mostly sold out, and it's costs about 20 Euro via internet.
At the desk at groundfloor 80 Euro...
You see the business centre, and also the metroline crossing the traffic junction.
This all at 800m high!
The 'Top Lock' and canalside shop along the Grand Union Canal at Braunston, Northamptonshire. A shot I have done many times, but decided to take another as I was heading to the Marina, as the sun had just popped out, and I really liked the sky.
Sadly, I had little luck with the rest of my session, and mission was aborted.
