A Cyclone battering the nearby state has brought lot of clouds and overcast sky to the forest area. But we started hoping that the sky will clear up sufficiently for photography. This was the first shot of the day which was almost after 45 mins of looking around for birds. The Brown Shrike, a less common cousin of the Shrike Family, easily identified by the Brown Plumage on the belly and back. Pretty similar behaviour to the other shrikes except that this prefers a much thicker bushy area unlike the Bay Backed Shrikes which prefer open grasslands or the Long Tailed Shrikes which have a more flexible habitat. They prefer insects and often are sighted with caterpillars. The background is a woody area almost 2-300 meters away and hence got a nice sweet bokeh.

I thought the Ultramarine Flycatcher which is a tad bigger than a man's thumb was small. And here it was, the Green Warbler even smaller than the Ultramarine. I am not 100% sure if it is Green or Greenish Warbler, both are distinct species. I think its a Green Warbler - the only difference between the two is that the Greenish has a much thicker pale white supercilium. And this one does not have that IMHO.

This is much smaller the Ultramarine Flycatcher, but is a similar type of bird, both in behavior and food. It sticks to the top canopy often in thick trees and prefers to catch flies for food. Sometimes it does come close to the ground, but by virtue of its tiny size and color, its very hard to sight. I was lucky to have sighted two of these birds which came out in the open since there were no people around at all today.

Another resident babbler in the country, I always confuse them with one of their common cousins. The bird is quite loud and can be easily heard before it is seen. These birds are quite social and always seen in groups. They prefer the thick bush to hide, but come out into the open to pick up insects and small grains in the soil / dirt roads.

Eight dragonflies.

February 2020 was my first visit to the state of Telangana in southern India. Usually on the first visit to a state I like to get out and see several places but I only had a week and enjoyed Hyderabad, so spent my whole time there.

On this particular day I'd gone for an afternoon walk around Hussain Sagar lake in the centre of the city. My aim was to get some pictures of the Buddha statue that stands on an island in the lake, and also the huge India flag that flies on a small peninsula jutting into the lake. Unfortunately I was not overly impressed with any of the pics of the statue. A combination of me still not knowing how to take photos with a proper camera, and using a kit lens that was not quite up to the task. I love just getting out and walking though so I kept going around the lake and snapping the occasional picture as I went.

As the sun began to get a little lower in the west I snapped a couple of pics from this spot. I had noticed a lot of dragonfly activity at the time but I was not trying to get pics of them. It was only when I got back to my room later that night that I realised this particular image included eight of them. I know it is really not a good photo, but I really enjoyed that walk which lasted 7+ hours, and this pre sunset scene in hazy Hyderabad is one that has stuck in my mind during the ensuing months.

These small colorful birds are resident throughout the year but they are kind of hard to spot and are specific to thick canopy and large trees. The males are quite colorful with a bright reddish orange plumage while the females are a bit dull brown and white. They prefer insects and caterpillars and are often sighted hunting for them. Again, social birds often seen in groups of half a dozen or more.

I find the bird is quite challenging to shoot as it moves very fast and quite often barely sitting in one place.
