After our Tonle Sap Lake tour, on the way back to the boat landing; the last bird of the day spotted before docking… this heron seemed to be trying to hide but tough to do with its bright coloring. It looks like a relative to the Night Herron we see in the Caribe and the USA and the Squacco Heron seen in Kenya.

We spotted several other solo herons in flight during the day just a bit too far for a good “bird-in-flight” shot so it was good to get this opportunity with this handsome bird.

Sap flows through a portion of the outer tree trunk called sapwood. Sapwood consists of actively growing cells that conduct water and nutrients (sap) from the roots to the branches of the tree. During the day, activity in the cells of sapwood produces carbon dioxide.

I took this photo in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had two Pinon Trees in our front yard and sometimes the sap would drop from the trees and land on the lower branches.
