To feel the power of these gentle giants is amazing. I stood the ground in Yellowstone and felt it shake. I watched a herd during rut season as the males were pawing and stamping and charging and my camera was clicking! The dust was flying so badly that even my dust proof camera had dust inside when it was time for me to leave. Not to mention my eyes! What a morning!

Die Findlinge, welche auf dem Boden der Gemeinden Feldbrunnen und Rüttenen liegen, stammen aus den Walliser Alpen und wurden im Laufe der letzten Eiszeit vom Rhone-Gletscher in die Region transportiert.
De Sint-Evermaruskapel is een kerkgebouw in Rutten in de Belgische gemeente Tongeren in de provincie Limburg. De kapel staat in heilige weide aan de zuidkant van het dorp. Hier ligt er een weide, omgeven door de straten Raam en Motstraat, en omvat de kapel, een cirkel van bomen en een beeld aan de noordkant. Aan de westzijde van de weide stroomt een beek en de kapel ligt op zo'n 300 meter hemelsbreed van de meer naar het noordwesten liggende Sint-Martinuskerk.
Het gebouw bestaat uit drie traveeën onder een zadeldak en een dakruiter. Aan de achterkant is er een sacristie aangebouwd tegen de vlakke koorsluiting onder een lager zadeldak en met maar één travee groot. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in silexblokken en mergelstenen als hoekblokken. De kapel heeft een geprofileerde kroonlijst. De voorgevel is gericht op het noordoosten en heeft een getoogd portaal te midden van een vlakke, kalkstenen omlijsting met sluiting. Boven het portaal bevindt zich een rondboognis met opschrift ST.-EVERMARUS O P N. Verder wordt het portaal geflankeerd door twee rechthoekige vensters, ieder met een kalkstenen latei en dorpel, en posten met negblokken van mergelsteen. In de beide zijgevels bevinden zich twee getoogde vensters met ook hier een vlakke kalkstenen omlijsting met sluitsteen. De sacristie heeft diefijzers in rechthoekige vensters in vlakke, kalkstenen omlijsting.
De kapel is gewijd aan Sint-Evermarus.
Geschiedenis
De legende verhaalt dat Evermarus, in de tijd van Pepijn van Herstal, door Hacco, de Heer van Herstappe, vermoord werd. Rond 968 werd door pastoor Ruzelius het graf van Evermarus gevonden in de kapelweide. Op die plaats zou hij een houten kapel hebben laten bouwen. Door abt Wedericus van Burtscheid werd later een groter bedehuis op het graf gebouwd, die werd gewijd door prins-bisschop Dietwin (1048-1075).
In 1784 werd de huidige kapel gebouwd door kanunnik Hardy op de plaats van het vroegere gebouw. De sluitsteen van het portaal toont dit jaartal.
Evermarusprocessie en het Evermarusspel
Rutten is bekend vanwege zijn jaarlijkse Sint-Evermarusfeesten op 1 mei. Hierbij wordt de moord herdacht op de Heilige Evermarus en zijn gezellen in de 7e eeuw. Het hoogtepunt is het Evermarusspel (ook Ruttem-mei genoemd), een toneelstuk in open lucht waaraan het volledige dorp meewerkt. In dit stuk spelen enkel echte Ruttenaren mee. Er figureren enkele tientallen paarden. Jaarlijks zijn enkele duizenden mensen aanwezig tijdens dit openluchtspektakel. Tevens wordt jaarlijks, eveneens op 1 mei, een processie gehouden voor deze heilige. Het feest is erkend als immaterieel Vlaams erfgoed en opgenomen in de Inventaris Immaterieel Cultureel Erfgoed Vlaanderen.

Looking forward to getting out there and listening to them revving their engines as the scent of hind drives them wild.
This gorgeous bull has one strange thing about him... his left antler is non-typical. If you look closely, the main beam branches into two beams, which isn't the 'standard' design and doesn't match his right antler.
Unusual antler growth like this may be genetic or may be the result of injury. The injury could be to the antler itself, when the growth is very new or the injury could be to another body part, such as the opposite side leg or shoulder. Blood flow to the antler can be disrupted while an injury is healing and the antler grows in a strange way.
I've seen these bulls by Lake Talbot over several seasons and haven't noticed this before, so it probably isn't genetic and may be the result of the antler taking a knock when it was very new. Another potential cause is a skull fracture, which could happen during a battle with another bull during the rutt. The fractured skull could fully heal but the antler could grow in unusual ways during future years.
We will see next year, whether I can spot the same bull with a non-typical antler or if it has gone back to growing 'normally'. These bulls are fairly easy to spot in July and August, so I'd be interested if anyone else has seen this bull with non-typical antler growth in other years.
He's still a beauty though and I'm sure he will have his harem in September.
Am nördlichen Rand von Solothurn, auf Gemeindegebiet von Rüttenen, liegt der Königshof. Es ist einer der ältesten Landsitze (erstmals 1540 erwähnt) rund um Solothurn, die fast alle im 16. oder 17. Jahrhundert entstanden sind. Der Königshof diente über Jahrhunderte bedeutenden Familien als Sommersitz.
These two Tule Elks were not allowed to join in on the tule elk games. The other elk used to laugh and call them names.
This fall when the elk come back I want to get of photo/video of these elk rutting and fighting. I saw them fighting last year but it was too dark to photograph :( The elk on the right has a couple of his antlers broken off.

The bumpy (rutt putt) bus on the way to/from Dhanushkodi. It was an interesting experience. I expect the bus has to keep on moving so it did not get bogged. To take this photo I was hanging out the back window.
Bio-mom and uncle visited in May, looking for authentic Jersey cuisine. Which obviously means ripper dogs and Taylor Ham, and a trip to Rutt's Hut. (White Mana couldn't be fit into our schedule - next time!)
