This series of images was taken on a late afternoon flight from Kansas City to Phoenix, Arizona. The time is late August, the monsoon season in Arizona. Monsoon storms typically form in the late afternoon, usually east of Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun. The images are shown in sequence. The first two were taken somewhere over New Mexico, at cruise altitude 40,000 feet. The others were taken over northeastern Arizona during descent, coming down into a storm and clouds. Image 3 was taken at 20,000 feet. Image 4 was taken at 17,000 feet, somewhere over the Sierra Ancha wilderness. Image 5, taken at 12,000 feet over the Sierra Ancha mountains, caught a double rainbow that followed the airplane for a minute or two. Image 6, also at 12,000 feet, is over the divide between the Sierra Ancha mountains (left lower zone of the image) and the Tonto Basin (right lower) and Roosevelt Lake (center). Image 7, taken at 7,000 feet, has cleared the clouds as the airplane turned into its final approach along the Salt River in the Valley of the Sun.

Dam at Roosevelt Lake, Arizona

I hadn't visited Roosevelt Lake before even though I live only 2 hours away (driving) so I decided to take a drive over there and check it out. It's nice but there are a lot of nicer places to visit in Arizona. Roosevelt Lake would be fun for a family or group of friends who like power boating and water skiing. It could even be a decent place for kayaking.

Great day exploring sites east of Phoenix on my free day. I had an incredible visit to the Roosevelt Lake Visitors Center at the Tonto National Forest on Friday July 13th, 2018. The Roosevelt Lake Visitors Center is located in Roosevelt, Arizona in Glia County, Arizona. Pictures of the visitors center and the views from outside the center.

Great day exploring sites east of Phoenix on my free day. I spent a good time in the Tonto National Forest and was able to stop at the observation areas to view the Roosevelt Lake Bridge and the Theodore Roosevelt Dam. The dam is on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix and forms Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The dam was originally built between 1905 and 1911. Definitely the largest dam I have ever seen. Taken on Friday July 13th, 2018.

The Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River is the northernmost point on the scenic Apache Trail loop. It's 105 years old (dayum!), but was expanded and resurfaced in 1989.

These boaters (and swimmers) are blocked from getting any closer to the Roosevelt Dam, which is just out of view to the left. A small portion of the Roosevelt Lake Bridge can be seen on the right, with Roosevelt Lake beyond.

It must have been refreshing to be in the lake/river here; our car said the outside temperature was 107°. I would imagine that the water, which is very deep here, would have been pretty chilly, despite the air temperature.

The prickly pear cactus in the foreground are a reminder that practically everything else in the photo is man-made.

Along the side of SR 188 and Roosevelt Lake. These roadside memorials always make me wonder what the story was.

Last weekend we took one of our drives through the backroads and by-ways. This trip took us through a town called Young and around the east side of Roosevelt Lake.

You can see the remains of the original road that used to run along the top of the original dam built in the 1900's. Then in the late 1980's the additional 77ft was added to the top of the dam to increase the volume of Roosevelt Lake by 20% to 1.6 milion arce feet which in plain English is 543 billion, 84 million, 782 thousand, 766 US gallons.
