Looking up at Preston Tower.
I climbed the wooden stairs to the top of this tower at 2:40, great views...but when the bell struck 3:00 I almost leapt out of my skin and I certainly had a ringing sensation in my ears!! If you decide to visit this lovely place, keep an eye on the time. That bell is extremely loud!! :))
Put your £2.00 (or £1.50 if you're a concession) into the Honesty Box, sign the guest book and enjoy the Tower, gardens and lovely woodland walk....you might see a Red Squirrel if you're lucky.
Info from Great Castles.
Preston Tower resides in Northumberland, England near the English border with Scotland. It was built in 1392 when warfare between neighbouring countries was commonplace. In 1415, Preston Tower existed as one of 78 Pele Towers in the county. Pele Towers were common on both sides of the border as they afforded defence against invasion from a neighbouring country, as well as Border Reivers who attacked and robbed people on both sides of the border between the 13th and 16th centuries. Thus, Preston Tower's seven foot wide outer walls were very successful in thwarting attackers. Some of those large stone blocks bear the same stone masons’ marks as those at Warkworth Castle.

Preston Mill lies to the north east of East Linton (East Lothian, Scotland). It is one of the oldest mechanically intact water-driven meal mills in the country. It is believed there has been a mill on this site since the 12th century, although the current buildings, with their attractive red pantiles, date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
I was waiting for the evening train home from Preston, the sky outside was black and threatening when the sun broke through from the west, bathing the old Victorian station in this
beautiful warm light.

Taken at the weekend, I was involved in a little celebratory procession. The building was under threat of demolition and has now been given a listed status so the future is a little brighter for it.

Most visitors to Northumberland will know of the grim and bloody history of this Border county, but seldom will they receive so vivid an impression of its reality as at Preston Pele Tower. Some rooms have been furnished as they might have been in the fourteenth century, and there are fascinating displays and information about the life of the Border reivers.

this is the living room at Preston Tower - furnished as it might have been at he time of the border raids. The room is tiny - just over an arms span in width, but the tower was bult for defence rather than comfort

What news from Preston?
Last heard, he escaped custody, was somewhere.
Figured you’d get a letter, if anybody.
Blood moon oranges with cinnamon sprinkled,
You take your hit, he’d say, then it’s my turn
Then it’s your turn then it’s my turn.
Pleasant memories, I can tell you that,
Sitting there,
Grandfather clock standing in the corner, watching us,
Tick tock, while Preston explained where they came from,
The blood moons.
I enjoyed hearing. Or not so much the hearing as
The listening.
So I’m waiting for an invitation.
I know what he would say:
“You’re gonna be waiting a lonnnnng time, buddy.”
Tried looking in the phone book once.
Wasn’t in it. Maybe changed his name.
Men get lost, is the thing.
Not saying that
But in the back of my mind,
That’s what I’m thinking.
Preston is lost,
Lost for good.

Built in 1894, this imposing Romanesque Revival was one of the earliest and best-known reform schools in the United States. Moved by reformists who decided that wards of the state should probably not be kept with criminals (they were originally locked in San Quentin), California established the Preston School of Industry as a center where these children could learn life and trade skills. Running from 1894 to 1960, wards have included heavyweight boxer Eddie Machen, "Bakersfield Sound" musician Merle Haggad, Beat artist Neal Cassady (aka Dean Moriarty) and author Eddie Bunker. The building was closed in the 1960s and is slowly being restored, funded by guided ghost tours. The Preston Castle is said to be haunted by housekeeper Anna Corbin, who was murdered in the basement in the 1950s.

Preston Temple. I only managed to get a couple of shots because a security man from the church didn't really like me taking pictures. Such a shame because it's a beautiful building. It got a 1st place in the PDI section of the "Illustrative" competition at St Helens Camera Club 12/11/18.

Preston Riversway Docks in the early hours of the morning. Every year the docks is the home of the Riversway Festival, a community event known for it's small parade and the flotilla of canal boats along the River Ribble. The area has never really lived up to it's potential and the visitors to the Docks, when they aren't residents, are generally drawn by the Morrisons supermarket. This could be an excellent place for restaurants but is as it under-utilised.
When I first moved to Preston over twenty years ago, this dock area was very different with the housing not yet built, and much of the development still to be undertaken. Even the railing was not in place at the time. I remember once walking around the docks, and being near the edge on a very windy day. A strong gust blew, and slide along a muddy patch towards the edge - luckily I was able to garb a large bollard to steady myself. Now with the railing and the concrete breakers, the docks is more sedate. I preferred it when giant waves of water crashed against the sides in stormy weather.
