A week of Fall… Somewhere in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests in North Carolina, where waterfalls and fall colors abound. I’m learning how to work with luminosity masks and this is an early attempt. I know it can be better but this is a good step in the right direction.
A week of Hong Kong… When night falls, and the lights come on, a totally different Hong Kong awakens. Shot on a Sony a7R and 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 lens, in March, 2014
A week of Hong Kong… One of the things I love most about Hong Kong is the street photography. Some say New York is the best; I’ll take the streets of HK any day, full of beautiful faces with stories to tell. Shot on a LUMIX GX-7 and Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens, in March, 2014
A week of Faces of Vietnam… Let’s end this week with a “puss in boots” worthy awwww! This little fella graced one of the very last photos made on this trip.
A week of Mumbai… It’s quite common to send your laundry out to be done in India. The places where laundry is done, such as this “laundry city” in Dhobi Talau is always a sea of color!
A week of Surfing… Shooting surfers from a helicopter was an incredible experience! This is about the farthest away we ever were from them. (The shoot was for a job, so the surfers were riding for us, and well aware of the situation).
Prints of this series are now available! Head to PhotoJoseph.com/prints to check ‘em out.
A week of Surfing… I met legendary surf photographer Jim Russi on one of my trips to the islands. Such a beautiful person, and I hope to spend more time with him again some day soon. Check out his amazing work at jimrussi.com
A week of Surfing… An odd aerial angle, to be sure. We were very low, the surfer riding a big wave, and it seems we’re practically at his level! (The shoot was for a job, so the surfers were riding for us, and well aware of the situation).

A week of Surfing… Another shot from the helicopter. We were insanely low to the water and close for this shot. It’s a 400mm lens and this is NOT CROPPED! (The shoot was for a job, so the surfers were riding for us, and well aware of the situation).

A week of Thailand… (2 of 6) Wat Pho, officially Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhlaram Ratchaworamahawihan, or The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The Buddha is 15 meters (50 feet) high and 43 meters (141 feet) long!

A week of NASA Curiosity… One of the Mars Rover Curiosity's six aluminum wheels, completely hollow and rigid. No flat tires allowed; AAA doesn't get to Mars! To see what these wheels look like today, Google "Mars rover wheel damage". They've taken a beating!
A week of Fall… The valleys and vineyards behind the towns of Ashland and Talent in Southern Oregon are full of color this time of year. This was shot perhaps a week or two too early; that, or the leaves will simply fall off. Still a gorgeous scene and (hopefully) a sign of things to come.
A week of Faces of Vietnam… The most common sitting position you’re likely to come across in South East Asia; the squat. It’s seen nearly everywhere. You try sitting like that for hours at a time!
A week of wildlife… Also in my own back yard, deer are as common as squirrels. Eventually you tire of photographing them, but fortunately before I did I captured this lovely shot of a young doe and buck staring me down. (PS—tomorrow’s photo will be a little… creepy!)
A week of snow… Sparks Lake in the Deschutes National Forest near Bend, Oregon is cold and snowy even in the middle of summer! This very early morning photo was created while on a photography workshop with my friend Sean Bagshaw. I’d curse him for making me get up so early but as you can see, it was well worth it.
A week of NASA Curiosity… Yours truly! That's me in the "bunny suit", or as Xeni at Boing Boing put it, "White ninja is annoyed that they sent him a black camera" :-) www.boingboing.net/2011/04/07/jlinaschke.jpg — Do you know why we have to be so clean to get near the Rover? It's not so we don't give Martians the common cold… it's so we don't contaminate Curiosity’s sensors with human schmutz, causing her to report that she found something like a human hair on Mars. That'd be bad.

A week of snow… Crater Lake in Oregon, where the caldera rim sits between 7,000 and 8,000 feet elevation, is snowy much of the year. Iâve only been once and that was after racing up the mountain to catch the sunset, which I managed to only see the tail end of.
A week of Faces of the Rift Valley... I met Pokot tribespeople of all ages, and all were incredibly welcoming and warm. This elder has such an expressive face, and thankfully didnât mind the intrusion of my lens.
A week of Faces of Vietnam… Break time! Waiting for a train, I spotted these two on the edge of the tracks.
A week of Macro… High speed sync on a flash can make for studio-like results, outdoors in full daylight. Learn more and see this shot get made in my Macro 101 course www.photojoseph.com/Macro_02 âChapter 1: Using high-speed sync to get light in a macro shotâ.

A week of Faces of the Rift Valley… I was shooting primarily with the Pokot tribe, where I met hundreds of people. Many wore western clothes, but most wore traditional jewelry and ornamentation.
A week of Mumbai… At the Gateway of India, folks gathered in the rain to watch young men jumping into the choppy sea.
A week of snow… A snowy road in Ashland, on the way to my studio one morning a year ago, shot on an iPhone. Those little cameras do manage to impress!
A week of Faces of the Rift Valley… In 2007 I traveled to Kenya with a humanitarian organization to make photographs for their fundraising use. These children posed gleefully for the camera in Marigat, a town we stopped in for provisions on the way deep into the Rift Valley.
A week of Thailand… (4 of 6) Muay Thai (kick boxing) is huge in Thailand. l have no idea where I was but I found myself with a front row seat to a match one night. I wasn’t allowed to stand (I don’t speak Thai but I know when I’m getting yelled at in any language) but was still able to get some cool shots from my seat.

A week of Faces of Vietnam… The most common form of transportation is the motorbike. They are simply everywhere, and you can be seen carrying tourists, groceries, furniture, or entire families.
A week of Macro… Tripod, off-camera high speed sync flash, and a micrometer went into this shot, just to show what happens when you put it all together. Learn more and see this shot get made in my Macro 101 course www.photojoseph.com/Macro_03 “Chapter 1: Putting concepts together in a more complex shot”.

A week of Mumbai… This young beggar stood between me and my subject at the Dadar Train Station and refused to move until I made his photo. He didn’t ask for anything; he just wanted to see the photo, then laughed and ran off. This image became my favorite from the entire trip!
A week of Faces of Vietnam… I love it when folks stop you to take their photo! This fellow was spreading fish out to dry in the sun, and when he saw me shooting his wares, insisted on a portrait!
A week of Faces of the Rift Valley... We regularly ran “famine feeds”, delivering much needed dry goods deep into the Rift Valley, this time to a place called Riongo. I don’t recall what this teenage girl thought was so funny, but she clearly knew something I didn’t.
A week of Fall… OK, this one is a couple of days late, and will also have to stand in for the rest of this week. I’m staying home with the new baby so will take this week off of the series.
This is the dry Emigrant Lake bed in Ashland, Oregon. Most of what you see, up to the ridge line, should be under water. All of the green has grown in the water’s absence. The road is, I believe, old Hwy 66, leading to Klamath Falls. This lake is a reservoir and used to be the home of Klamath Junction, which was sacrificed for the reservoir in 1960.

A week of Fall… As the colors start to turn on a cold misty morning near Emigrant Lake in Ashland Oregon, a lone red tree pokes through the mist.
A week of food… There’s nothing quite like roasting an entire pig over an open fire. Even in rural Slovenia the tradition isn’t so common anymore, but if you pull enough hungry people together and give them a reason to celebrate (like a certain photographer’s 40th birthday party!), this happens.
A week of Macro… Nothing cuter than a puppy! This little shimapoo is so adorable. Learn more and see this shot get made (along with lots of cute video of this pup!) in my Macro 101 course “Chapter 3: Shooting close-up shots of pets” www.photojoseph.com/Macro_06
A week of Hong Kong… The antique markets (or, “antique” markets) in Hong Kong are fantastic. A lot of the wares are crap, or fake, but it’s still loads of fun. And make for great photography. Just don’t forget to buy something! Shot on a LUMIX GX-7 and Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens, in March, 2014
A week of wildlife… This White Rhino is another resident of the Oregon Wildlife Safari in Winston, OR. You can get remarkably close to these animals!
A week of Surfing… Top down, and while not the most dramatic action photo, it’s one of my favorites, simply because it shows without a doubt we were above the surfers. In many of the shots we were so low the images could be mistaken for water-based shots! (The shoot was for a job, so the surfers were riding for us, and well aware of the situation).

A week of Mumbai… Rain is a constant in June in Mumbai. that didn’t seem to slow these two down though, dodging traffic in the rain on a moped!
A week of food… dessert! I do adore a fancy dessert. And a fancy affair. Put the two together and it must be a wedding! The meticulous plating of a fancy dessert dish is always a sight to behold, from the perfect strawberry to the sculpted cream and the artfully wiggled chocolate line… what’s not to love?
A week of wildlife… Now much closer to home — in fact, in my back yard — this black bear cub came to visit with momma and a sibling a couple of winters ago. This photo ran in the local paper along with a few others, but it’s my favorite from the bunch. If you’re following me on the socials, you’ve seen that a new crop of black bears are back, earlier than ever.
A week of Faces of Vietnam… Kids are always a joy to photograph. Although I’m not sure why mom has a helmet, and the kiddo does not!
A week of Surfing… See what you may have missed! Scroll back and check out all of this week’s #PhotoJosephWeekOfSeries. Some really fun and unique shots from helicopters, a lovely sunset and one of legendary surf photographer Jim Russi.

A week of food… shot for a local restaurant called Taroko, this image of a fancy sushi roll, along with many others, headline their website at TarokoAshland.com
A week of Hong Kong… Everywhere you look, a new scene is unfolding in front of you. These workers taking a break across the street were great when I went unnoticed, but as soon as they spotted me, the shot became 100x better. Shot on a LUMIX GX-7 and Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens, in March, 2014
A week of food… Ah, sushi. One of the most pure and simple foods on the planet. Even if it does include the occasional shrimp head! Shot at a restaurant in Hong Kong.
A week of NASA Curiosity… is the Mars Rover Curiosity's descent stage, which flew the rover down to the Mars surface using eight rockets, and lowered it on a tether for landing. The orange spheres are propellant tanks. If you never saw the details on how Curiosity was delivered to the Martian surface, Google it. It was incredible!
A week of Hong Kong… When the noisy day and throng of people get to be too much, you can seek solitude in one of the many beautiful temples around the city. Shot on a LUMIX GX-7 and LUMIX 14mm f/2.5 lens, in March, 2014
A week of food… street food is a favorite of mine, and Bangkok is one of the best places for it. This colorful stall is quite high end when it comes to street food, found in an open air market instead of down a back alley… but that doesn’t mean the food is any better! The smaller the stall, the better the food, in my experience. I love the play of the colorful dress against the colorful wares in this photo.
