At the peak of the snow fall rate during our 1st storm of the season, I caught this eastbound train making the curve heading into Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Have a great week ahead everyone :-)

The Story: In another rare railroad event this month, we have Pennsylvania Northeastern train W230 operating in the day light. typically a move made in darkness, they are out in the light due to SEPTA implementing a "LifeLine" Service Schedule, due to the Corona Virus. We also are treated to the last operating C39-8 in the USA.

Having an old schoolmate in Millersburg, Pennsylvania afforded me the opportunity to make several visits to the state during my early adulthood. This inviting backroad is in the countryside between Killinger and Millersburg, a few miles east of the Susquehanna River. I took the photo during a visit in October, 1981.

With SD60E #7010 leading, NS empty hopper train #509 decends the hill of the West Slope splitting the PT-258 Pennsylvania Railroad era intermediate signals. I've been wanting to shoot the signals in the area again for quite some time now and I was lucky it was sunny this day. NS is working their way west with removals and replacements as they have already gotten to JACKS.

Most of the time I take absurdly detailed notes on my large format photos but the only thing I remember about this negative is it was made on 4x5 film and somewhere in Pennsylvania, most likely up in the area above US 6.

Technical details:

4x5 large format film camera.

Developed in Diafine two-bath developer 4 mins + 4 mins using very slight inversions in a Paterson 3-reel Super System 4 Tank with film sheets loaded into a 20th Century Camera QL45-JP 6-sheet film developing reel.

Negative scanned with Epson 4990 on holders fitted with ANR glass.

VueScan Pro used for scanning.

Cropped to 6x12 format and toned using techniques from Kenneth Lee's "Selecting toning in Photoshop" article which describes how he tones his large format film scans. Use the Google, it's well worth the read.

By 1882, the Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad (by traffic and revenue), the largest transportation enterprise, and the largest corporation in the world. Its budget was second only to the U.S. government.

A beautiful summer day in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania.

Gaia and I traveled to Pennsylvania a pair of years ago. I traveled light, only bringing one camera. I got very litle time for photography, but on a couple of occasions, time permitted. I think this church is near Ephrata, but I forget which town it was in. It was near sunset, and the light was fading. We were driving nowhere in particular. I wanted to find barns and churches to photograph, and was running out of sunlight. Luckily, I happened upon this church just in time.
