An exquisite mural; a compicated issue.

The mural "NODAPL" is painted on a wall of Greenbriar Foods, a supplier to organizations of snack foods and candies that will be sold in fundraising events. It is located at the intersection of Orleans and Division Streets in the Detroit Eastern Market area.

NODAPL refers to the Dakota Access Pipeline, which is designed to carry oil from America's northern border (North Dakota) to its southern border (Texas), where it will be refined. The project is controversial and complicated. President Obama stalled the project to the delight of environmentalists and Native Americans whose lands it crossed. President Trump reinstated approval for the project.

The artist, "Sintex", is a well-known and accomplished contemporary artist who once became controversial himself, by painting over another artist's mural.

11-24-17 UPDATE: A pipeline in this region allowed a leak 220,000 gallons of oil, exactly what protesters feared would happen.

US Bank Stadium Minneapolis, MN. View from the top deck during the last Minnesota Vikings football game - looking out over 62,000 fans. The Vikings win 38/10 against da'Bears - Skol!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

US Bank Stadium opened on July 22, 2016 costing a little over $1B to build. It has a fixed translucent roof and the worlds largest pivoting doors that provide a nice view of downtown Minneapolis and will swing open (in good weather) to let in some fresh air (plus a bird or two). The Stadium will host next years Supper Bowl LII on February 4, 2018 prompting the marketing campaign #BoldNorth.

During this game, a couple of protesters sneaked by security, climbed up a ceiling truss, and hung a banner demanding US Bank to stop supporting the embattled Dakota Access Pipeline energy project. You can see the white banner in the middle left of this picture; it reads "https://flic.kr/p/Lz2ymp". If you zoom in, you can see one of the protesters silhouette on top of the banner. The climbers hung around on ropes until the end of the game when they were escorted out to free stay in our local jail.

After the final DAPL permit was granted, the Indigenous Coalition at Standing Rock is calling for February 8th to be an international day of emergency actions to disrupt business as usual and unleash a global intersectional resistance to fossil fuels and fascism. In New York the #NoDAPL ! Emergency Protest Against Easement action was held at Thomas Paine Park (Foley Square)

On February 17, 2017; at the New York HQ of BayernLB in Manhattan, members of the Ramapough Lenape Nation and American Indian Law Alliance lead indigenous and environmental activists in prayer ceremony calling on Bavarian-based BayernLB bank to divest from companies building the Dakota Access Pipeline across treaty-protected land in North Dakota

On March 28, 2017; NY Renews, People's Climate Movement, and Resist Here organized a rapid response action outside Trump Tower in Fifth Avenue, New York. About 200 people stood in the rain to rally and march from there to Gov. Cuomo's office on 3rd Avenue, calling on Governor Cuomo and New York elected officials to step up and fight against Trump’s dangerous Anti-Climate Executive Order.

The final stop before reaching the #nodapl camps in North Dakota was downstream of the contested crossing on the shore of the Missouri River to watch a beautiful sunrise as a beaver took an early morning swim.

My friend and journalist, Winifred Bird, takes in the scenery of Smith Lake. This lake is located along the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.

Two white pelicans drift along Smith Lake, a site along the DAPL route, in an early morning mist.

Smith Lake is along the Dakota Access Pipeline Route. A flock of over 150 migrating pelicans were gathered on the lake stopover site before continuing south.
