Phimai historical park, Thailand.

The Phimai historical park (Thai: ปราสาทหินพิมาย) protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. It is located in the town of Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Shrine in one of the largest Khmer temples in what today is Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand. The temple must have been an important part of the empire, marking one end of the ancient Khmer highway from Angkor and with the enclosed area similar to Angkor Wat in size. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century and built as a Buddhist temple, even though the Khmer were Hindu at the time, reflecting Buddhism as the established local religion.

As most Khmer temples Phimai was built to resemble the universe in Buddhist and Hindu cosmology. The main building forming the peak of mount Meru in the center and the outer buildings and enclosures forming the surrounding waters and mountains.

Today Phimai is protected as part of a National Historical park, with limited reconstruction and restoration.

Thanks to everyone who likes and comes to watch my pictures. I'm happy to share the place that I got to shoot.

another shot from what is said to be Thailand’s largest banyan tree ไทรงาม in Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima. This grove with its massive root system spans an area of some 1,350 square meters. A while ago i published a detail view of the fantastic root system in a Black & White version.

Banyans are important in southern Asian mythology and religion. Buddha is believed to have become enlightened whilst meditating under a type of banyan known as ‘Bodhi’. In Hinduism a banyan tree is considered to be Krishna’s resting place. In animist beliefs widespread throughout Southeast Asia banyans are thought to be home of powerful spirits. In Thailand these spirits are typically female, hence often there are colourful dresses hung under revered trees as offerings.

Wat Ban Rai is a magnificent and incredible temple, and a true curiosity, to see in Nakhon Ratchasima. Since we are told that our wonderful Gothic cathedrals were once colorful and flamboyant, I dare to compare this incredible contemporary temple, symbol of the faith of the local people. Indeed, the original architecture, the attention to detail well executed, the impressive size of the moment makes me think this comparison. In addition, all these colors that make the monument shine are made of ceramic. This means that despite the local monsoons, the monument retains its freshness of the first day. The interior as exceptional as the exterior, is to be seen absolutely.

The Phimai historical park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. It is located in the town of Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The temple marks one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor. As the enclosed area of 1020x580m is comparable with that of Angkor Wat, Phimai must have been an important city in the Khmer empire. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple,[1] as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century. Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai.

The first inventory of the ruins was done in 1901 by the French geographer Etienne Aymonier. They were put under governmental protection by announcement in the Government Gazette, Volume 53, section 34, from September 27, 1936. Most of the restorations were done from 1964 to 1969 as a joint Thai-French project. The historical park, now managed by the Fine Arts Department, was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 12, 1989.

In the aftermath of the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767, attempts were made to set up five separate states, with Prince Teppipit, a son of king Boromakot, attempting to establish Phimai as one, holding sway over eastern provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima. The weakest of the five, Prince Teppipit was the first defeated and was executed in 1768. Phimai had also been an important town at the time of the Khmer. The temple Prasat Hin Phimai, located in the center of the town, was one of the major Khmer temples in ancient Thailand, connected with Angkor by an ancient Khmer Highway, and oriented so as to face Angkor as its cardinal direction. The site is now protected as the Phimai Historical Park.

Chet Sao Noi Waterfall, Saraburi, Thailand.

Chet Sao Noi Waterfall National Park is one of the most popular parks in the country, one of the most visited by local tourists. It is not known much by the foreign tourists and overlooked as most foreign tourists prefer to get to nearby Khao Yai National Park.

The park is located between Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces. Muak Lek River which flows through the falls is the natural border between both provinces at the area of the falls. Crossing one of the bridges from east side, or swimmin to the other side and you will be on Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

Chet Sao Noi Waterfall is a 7 tiered waterfall on Muak Lek River, in a very short walking distance from visitor center area of the park. Chet Sao Noi means seven little girls, referring to number of tiers the waterfall has, though there is also a story about 7 sisters that drowned in one of the ponds.

The falls at each tier are no more than few meters high, at most 4 meters, but quite wide and streaming down over the smooth rocky edges of many curvy emerald ponds, creating a magical view. All tiers are accessible by a nearly 2 km long circular trail following the river bank on both sides of the river.

Haew Narok is the largest waterfall in Khao Yai National Park with over a 150-metre-high cliff draped in jungle. The name directly translates to Cliff of Hell. There were many reported cases of elephants falling to death. The waterfall is located deep in a jungle with only one one-kilometer road to reach from the main road of the park.

Phanom Rung Historical Park, Buriram, Thailand.

Phanom Rung is probably the most impressive and significant of the Khmer temples that can be found in Thailand. It was constructed in Angkor style during the 10th until the 13th century as a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva.

Phanom Rung, officially named Prasat Hin Phanom Rung was built on top of a hill in Buriram province on the base of which another Khmer complex, Muang Tum was constructed around the same time. As the main tower is made out of pink sandstone, the complex is also called Phanom Rung stone castle.

The temple was built on top of a hill which symbolizes Mount Kailash, a holy mountain in Hinduism on top of which Shiva lives. Phanom Rung lies on the ancient route from Angkor (the center of the ancient Khmer empire) to Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Constructed during the reign of Suryavarman I (1001-49), Phimai was part of the Khmer Empire and lies on once was a direct route to the capital at Angkor. Originally a Brahmanic shrine dedicated to Shiva, it was rededicated as a Mahayana Buddhist temple at the end of the 12th century.
