Tucson Botanical Gardens – Darlene Buhrow reporting

Buds of the early blooming plants continue to open slowly around the Gardens. We are anticipating some rain for the coming weekend, which can only aid in bringing more flowers. The gopher plant, Euphorbia rigida, makes a striking arrival in bloom with bright yellow-green flowers that contrast with the blue-gray foliage. ragged rock flower, Crossosoma bigelovii, has petite white blooms on the shrub’s stems that might not seem worth sniffing, but merely standing near this plant when in bloom makes it impossible to ignore. The scent is powerful, sweet and delightful. Speaking of sweet odors, the sweet violets, Viola odorata, have sprung up beautiful purple flowers above the heart-shaped leaves. Like a delicate carpet, this plant is a treasure in springtime around the Historical Gardens of TBG. Finally, a plant that is a consistent first-bloomers each spring, primrose jasmine, Jasminum mesnyi. The arcing evergreen stems put out loads of cute yellow flowers that appear to cascade.

The Latin name of this lovely tree, from West China, is Jasminum mesnyi.

Jasminum mesnyi (Primrose Jasmine) is a species of flowering plant in the family Oleaceae, native to Vietnam and southern China (Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan). It is also reportedly naturalized in Mexico, Honduras and parts of the southern United States (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona).

Jasminum mesnyi is a scrambling evergreen shrub/climber growing to 3 metres (10 ft) tall. It has fragrant yellow flowers in spring and summer. The form usually found in cultivation has semi-double flowers. It is not reliably frost-hardy. With suitable support it can be grown as a slender climber, though in confined spaces it will require regular pruning.

Jasminum mesnyi has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

The Mitrella mesnyi or Rumdul (Bronze) is the National Flower of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Rumdul is so common in Cambodia that one will hear this flower in Khmer (Cambodian) songs - Cambodian writers (stories, songs, ballads, poems) wrote songs telling of tales revolving around the Rumdul flower or about Rumdul itself, such examples are Rumdul Kraties and Rumdul Pursat.
