AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - Officials are trying to piece together exactly what happened with Continental Flight 3407 before it crashed into a home in Clarence Thursday.
44 people and 4 crew members were on the plane. One person on the ground also died. The flight was a 74-seat Q400 Bombardier aircraft and operated by Colgan Air. Colgan officials are expressing sorrow to the family members of the victims in the accident.
The President and CEO of the Pinnacle Airlines Corp and CEO of Colgan Air, Philip Trenary says they are doing everything they can to find out what caused the crash. Officials say they Q400 Bombardier was a brand new plane. The pilot flying the plane was a male and had a female co-pilot. They have confirmed the flight did leave Newark and was delayed.
The flight was originally scheduled to arrive at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport around 8:30pm Thursday, they have not said why it was delayed. This is the first accident with the company."

Back on top of Mt. Wilson which is home to numerous transmitters serving the Los Angeles area, including: radio, television, and microwave relay facilities.
Theres antennas are not the large bank that sit on top of Mt. Wilson but a little further down, facing Anaheim, and the OC. You really get an amazing view of all Southern California from up on top!

A tribute to the 41st and 42nd Canadian Armed Forces troops killed in Afghanistan.
Mixed media collage, acrylic, found objects, handmade paper 9.5 x 9.5 inches.
On Oct 15, 2006 I looked at the front page of the National Post and this is what resulted. I was so saddened by the news of two more casualties in Afghanistan. I recall not too long ago and soon after Stephen Harper was elected, there was media attention over whether or not we should pay tribute as a nation to our fallen soldiers individually. I decided then I would, and that each deserved to be honored and believe it important that each Canadian at home have the opportunity to know the price of freedom . I decided to created this collage to pay tribute to these soldiers personally. I pray my next piece of war related art will be one of celebrating the end of violence globally. A lofty goal.
The collage has several symbols represented and I decided to detail them individually as this relief collage didn't photograph well.
1) the torn fabric of our world where wars have become commonplace.
2) There are 42 hearts contained within the piece - one for each soldier who has given their life.
3) At the top right there are two faces representing female/male soldiers, mothers and sisters of male soldiers, fathers and brothers of female soldiers, and representative of all Canadians who mourn our troops. These are situated above the neck and body depicted indicating their souls are in heaven as their family and friends and fellow Canadians grieve for their loss. They have risen above the samsara body below.
4) In the center of the collage there is the number 42 and the Asian symbol for dream, both upside down representing lost dreams.
5) Below the dream symbol is the original newspaper clipping noting the latest toll.
6) Next to the hand which holds the hearts of all, is a woman in a Burka, symbolizing our empathy for the suppression of our global sisters in Afghanistan and their split eye representing how difficult it is for a woman to be herself in her homeland under the present circumstances - divided loyalties to her gender and her country.

While I was up in Redmond at Microsoft for the Pro Photography Summit a few weeks back (see blog post and photos here), I was able to take some time during the lunch break on the second day of the conference to visit with Microsoft's Media Center Team.
I've been a big fan of Microsoft's Media Center platform for a while (a photo of my Media Center set up was actually my first photo I ever posted to Flickr) and especially its most recent iteration with Windows Vista. I think Microsoft's Media Center Platform represents the very best home entertainment system available on the market today and sits head and shoulders above AppleTV, TiVo and other home media platforms.
Charlie Owen gave me a tour of their offices and I got to meet some new people from the team that I hadn't met before.
I couldn't take pictures of lots of stuff on white boards and the walls because development on Media Center is ongoing and much of the stuff about future features is confidential, but I got a few shots of the offices and some of the team members I met. You can see them in my Microsoft Media Center team set here.
So what were some of the surprises that I saw when visiting the Media Center Team?
First I was surprised what a relaxed environment they all work in. For some reason I'd always pictured people working for Microsoft wearing business casual polo shirts and Levi's Dockers behind desks that all looked pretty much the same. Each person on the team had their own workspace and each had it pretty much set up however they wanted. Couches, futons, very cool music space set ups that looked more like a DJ stand than corporate offices. And while I didn't see any dogs or Foosball tables, the set up reminded me a lot more of a Silicon Valley start up than the corporate behemoth that is Microsoft. Some people were actually using Macs. People walked around in t-shirts, shorts and sandals, etc. A very relaxed working environment.
Charlie Owen and Noah Spitzer-Williams showed me a pretty cool room where the team tests how things sound (see photo above). Music is obviously a big part of Media Center and we spent some time in what was pretty much a dream home theater room completely sound proofed for testing out different music file formats, bit rates, etc. It would definitely be the place to take your date on a Saturday night to impress her with the latest release of some cool DVD. I was also pleased to see the team working with large music libraries. Steve Moreland who works on music for the Media Center team had a music library of over 130,000 mp3s.
In their offices they had a design board with a bunch of interesting things pinned to it. Charlie told me that this was a board where people on the team post interestingly designed stuff for everyone to see. The designs didn't necessarily have to have anything to do with Media Center, more just a place to post interesting stuff to inspire creativity.
Anyways, thanks to the team for taking a few minutes to show me what they were up to and sharing some of their time and space with me.
The "Art and Media Centre Rhine Haven", better known as the Gehry Buildings, was completed in the place of the old customs building in 1999. The American architect Frank O. Gehry has made a name for himself worldwide with his deconstructivist architecture. Among his creations are the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, the Disney concert hall in Los Angeles and the dancing house in Prague. New construction techniques had to be developed to put up the freeform facades of the three office buildings. The mirror surface of "House B" reflects the facades of the red "House A" and the white "House C" to create an optical connection among the group of buildings.
The 240.5 metre high concrete telecommunications tower Rheinturm Düsseldorf is seen here in the background.
