Scarlet lily beetle / Lilienhähnchen (Lilioceris lilii) - Large On Black for the details.

in our garden - Frankfurt-Nordend

ATTENTION !!!

This good looking bug is a real devil for all lillies in the garden.

It eats the stems, leaves, buds and flowers of lilies, fritillaries and other plants in the Liliaceae family.

But he's a great model for colourful insect macros :-))

Abflug von meinem Daumennagel.

The scarlet lily beetle, red lily beetle, or lily leaf beetle (Lilioceris lilii), is a leaf beetle that eats the leaves, stem, buds, and flower, of lilies, fritillaries and other members of the family Liliaceae. It is now a pest in most temperate climates where lilies are cultivated.

kleine ungebetene Gäste......sie treten derzeit wieder vermehrt auf !!!

Family: Chrysomelidae

SubFamily : Criocerinae

Species: Lilioceris lilii

Lilioceris lilii can be found almost anywhere lilies grow (natural or cultivated) in the northern hemisphere and is the most widely distributed of the Lilioceris species. The native range would appear to be across the whole of continental Europe and northern Asia but is has become an established alien in the UK, eastern Canada, and northeastern USA. Unfortunately, although it is an attractive beetle it is a pest as it chews away on the very young leaves and flower buds of a large range of Lilium and Fritillaria species. Although only a small beetle, with a length of up to 9mm, it is surprising the amount of damage that it can do.

The adult beetle overwinters in the soil and emerges in the Spring to mate and lay eggs. Females can produce 200-350 eggs in one season. The resulting larvae are rather unattractive creatures being covered in their own mucilaginous excrement derived from a dorsally situated anal opening. In fact, although there are four instars, the only way to tell the age of the larva is by the size of its head as its body is completely covered in its own poop! The larval stage is when the most damage to the host plant occurs and lasts for up to 3 weeks. Pupation then takes place in the soil beneath the host plant and the new adult emerges 20 days later.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.

Scharlachrote Feuerkäfer

Wurde von mir fälschlicher weise als Lilienhähnchen (Lilioceris lilii) bezeichnet.

Was described by me earlier as Lilioceris lilii. That was wrong. Thanks to Mathias Ihrig-Goede (www.flickr.com/photos/maigoede) for the hint.

Lilienhähnchen (Lilioceris lilii)

Only for your information:

The beetle was not really hanging on this blade of grass! I only was fancy putting this beetle into the picture! ;-)
