Another Green Man from the John Piper screen in the Wessex Hotel in Winchester. I chose this for the icon for Poetry and Pictures English, as I felt that Piper truly understood the imagery of the Green Man and its place in English history. It is said that when Piper was not working, he doodled, and when he doodled, he drew the Green Man! I think it is a very poetical image as are all Piper's Green men, both here in Winchester and elsewhere.

Colours.

Flames licking, flicking

hands and arms and feet

if we can believe it,

wicker-man, flicker-man,

red man burning.

Dying, the year: listen, we hear

the rustling death of leaves

of feeble breath, twigs and bones

rattling in the wind,

grey man yearning.

New thrusting, spring trusting,

white perfection hanging.

Golden bursting,

Green Man, unseen-man,

hope returning.

The John Lennon wall in Prague - apparently John Lennon never visted but the graffiti trend was started by the Imagine poster (2/3rds of the way across in black and white). The wall is now a tourist attraction. I took this with my Fuji X10 in panorama mode and just walked along rather than turn around. Seemed to work OK :-)

This residence is also acknowledged as the Johns-King Property is in Smyrna, TN and not far from Old Jefferson. It was recently Identified by the Murfreesboro Post as one of the top 10 endangered historic internet sites in Rutherford County.

It was constructed in 1805 as a log residence, by the Weakley household soon after receiving a land grant for the location. Then in 1840, Thomas and Unity Smith Johns bought the property and created numerous improvements.

The creating was used as a Confederate hospital and headquarters in the course of the Battle of Stones River. In 1863, farmers Benjamin and Mary King purchased the home soon after their prior property in LaVergne was destroyed by Union troops and their descendants occupied the residence for a lot of years.

John Hancock Tower in Boston. I like this building. It is the "fake" FBI Building of my favorite TV-Show "Fringe". It looks a bit out of this world in this street setting.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

― Hunter S. Thompson

And so you did John..what a ride you had!! we will meet again..love always.. xc

Statue of John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto, a Venetian) who, under the patronage of Henry VII, sailed from Bristol in the Matthew to find a passage to Asia. He made landfall somewhere near Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland on June 24, 1497, claiming it in the name of Great Britain. This was Britain first official voyage in the Western Ocean and the discovery allowed her to make claims in the New World. Newfoundland was British territory until March 31, 1949 when she joined the Canadian confederation.

John Duncan was born in Dundee, Scotland in the year 1866. His father was a cattleman, but John had always showed both a disinterest in the family business and a propensity for visual art, so much that by the age of 11 he was already a prolific student at the Dundee School of Art. Called a madman by some and a mystic by others, Duncan admitted to hearing "faerie music" whilst he painted. His dreamy, mystical nature led him to fall in love with a woman whom he believed to have discovered the Holy Grail in a well in Glastonbury and who later divorced him. He never remarried and died in 1945.

In 1822, John Fisher, bishop of Salisbury, commissioned John Constable to paint the version of this composition now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Fisher and his wife are visible at lower left in all versions of the composition. In July 1824, he asked Constable to revise it, whereupon the present canvas was begun. Infrared reflectography reveals that it started with an outline traced from the first version, and that the artist then improvised directly on the canvas, painting in the sky and opening up the foliage arching over the south transept to give the spire a more dominant role in the composition. In Constable's estate sale, this work was described as "nearly finished." It is indeed a study for the final version, completed in 1826 (Frick Collection, New York).

The John Day River basin drains nearly 8,100 square miles of central and northeast Oregon. It is one of our nation’s longest free-flowing river systems. Elevations range from 265 feet at the confluence with the Columbia River to over 9,000 feet at the headwaters in the Strawberry Mountain Range.

The John Day River system is fortunate to have designation under two important river preservation programs: the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the Oregon Scenic Waterways Act. Together, these two acts, one a federal program and one a state program, provide the best protection available today for the natural, scenic, and recreational values of our river environments.

Silhouetted rocks and sun lit rocks above the John Day River.

Recreation opportunities include hunting, fishing, sightseeing, horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, camping, and whitewater rafting.

The John Day Wild and Scenic River is part of the Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands. The National Conservation Lands include nearly 27 million acres of National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails. The National Conservation Lands work to conserve the essential fabric of the West, while offering exceptional opportunities for recreation, solitude, wildlife viewing, exploring history, and scientific research.

Probably the best $$ I've ever spent. There's not enough money to buy this little guy, he's worth his weight in gold. He's got a forever home with me.
