Chicago's John Hancock Center is the seventh tallest building in the United States, and apparently features some of the highest apartment residences in the world. I was able to get right against the tower for this shot. Contrast and clarity boosted in post.

An Evening With The Maine

It was the first sunny day in what feels like a long time, and man did the sun arrive with a vengeance. It was too hot to stay in the house, so the dog and I went for a brief walk in the cool forest and I finally got to see this great view. I also got a peek of Mt. Hood, but it was a little too hazy to get a good shot. Getting to the trail is a bit scary, one has to walk on/in a busy road, but worth it.

Happy Friday everyone.

John 6:35

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Austin Gibbs, This Century, The Maine - July 28, 2010 - Crofoot

Last Monday, 8 October 2007, @ 7:05 p.m., E.S.T, the legendary & much beloved John Henry was euthanized at age 32 years, after suffering kidney failure.

John-John's death, amidst all the other horrible events of the world in which we live, stands out in my mind. It is for him (mostly for me) that I cry. There are many humans who would say that my "view" of sentient life & the position I hold on the moral status of non-human animals--as expressed in my grief about John-John's death, is subversive (or "wrong"--whatever that means).

All I know is that John-John was one of the most inspirational individuals who has lived (at least in my life-time). You can read poignant accounts of how John-John touched others too:

* Steve Haskin (who wrote the definitive biography of John Henry):

* Amy Zimmerman, who knew--& loved, him well:

I last saw John-John in March 2006. He was standing in the corner of his stall (his favorite in-stall position), pointing his hindquarters toward the door where I stood. Cathy Roby & another care-taker (an equine vet who volunteered once a week out of his busy practice just so he could be with & take care of John-John) told me that he was not feeling up to greeting visitors at that moment, on that day. It didn't matter: I was happy to stand there for a time & coo a bit to him.

I remember years ago when the still-living great Cigar was kept in the stall & a paddock adjacent to those of John Henry. One day, both were out in their paddocks & John Henry, with head held high, went up to the fence between his paddock & Cigar's, & snorted & stomped at Cigar. Cigar turned & the two of them raced side-by-side along the fence until they could go no further.

That's how I will remember dear John-John.

Requiescat in pace, John-John. Hope you are already running with your old buddies Forego & Kelso in the green, green fields of no pain, hunger or thirst.

Thank you for allowing me to love.

Yours,

MDK

John o' Groats lies on Britain's northeastern tip, and is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland, with Land's End in Cornwall lying 876 miles (1,410 km) to the southwest. It is not the most northerly point on the island of Britain (nearby Dunnet Head is further north).

This is John Winters, our Indiana Jones and master ruins tracker who cut many of the original trails to the Loyalist ruins on our island. (The same trails I've been re-opening for the last few months after they got hammered by hurricanes.) He's my hero! (And he has great character in that weathered face.) I wish he lived here year round although he wears me out in a week so it's probably good that he doesn't. He a machete wielding madman

A cabinet card portrait of John Boyle O'Reilly from around 1885 by Holland, 10 Temple Place, Boston.

O'Reilly was an Irish born poet and novelist who was sentenced to deportation to Western Australia for his part in the Fenian Rising of 1867. He subsequently managed to escape from captivity and made his way to America where he settled in Boston. He found work with a Boston newspaper, The Pilot, later becoming editor and part owner. He died in August 1890, possibly from an overdose of sleeping medicine.

The Cry of the Dreamer

by John Boyle O'Reilly

I am tired of planning and toiling

In the crowded hives of men;

Heart-weary of building and spoiling,

And spoiling and building again.

And I long for the dear old river,

Where I dreamed my youth away;

For a dreamer lives forever,

And a toiler dies in a day.

I am sick of the showy seeming

Of a life that is half a lie;

Of the faces lined with scheming

In the throng that hurries by.

From the sleepless thoughts' endeavour,

I would go where the children play;

For a dreamer lives forever,

And a thinker dies in a day.

I can feel no pride, but pity

For the burdens the rich endure;

There is nothing sweet in the city

But the patient lives of the poor.

Oh, the little hands too skillful,

And the child-mind choked with weeds!

The daughter's heart grown willful,

And the father's heart that bleeds!

No, no! from the street's rude bustle,

From the trophies of mart and stage,

I would fly to the woods' low rustle

And the meadows' kindly page.

Let me dream as of old by the river,

And be loved for the dream alway;

For a dreamer lives forever,

And a toiler dies in a day.

John is sad because he doesn't have a valentine. He asked me to post this and ask if anyone would be his valentine?? He told me to make sure I added that he is a good Kisser!

Update...

John wanted me to add a few things.

John is a Flaken.. He won't eat any pellet food.

John is partial to goldfish with big eyes.. I guess it's a goldfish thing, but..if you have a big set of bulging eyes, with good eye cleavage, let him know.. I guess send him a picture?

John is looking for someone who would be willing to dive to the deep end of the tank with him. He's not interested in a one night swim.

John is NOT a bottom feeder!! He wants someone who will meet him in the middle or better, at the top of the tank. He's pretty fussy about this..

John O Groats was a huge disappointment on my trip. It is tired and run down in my opinion. However, they have erected 3 lovely sculptures that represent the rough seas and huge boulders that plagued ships over the years. This is one of those sculptures.

American actor John Saxon (1935) worked on over 200 film and TV projects during the span of seven decades.

John Saxon was born Carmine Orrico in Brooklyn, New York, in 1935. He is the son of immigrants from Calabria, Italy. He studied acting with famous acting coach Stella Adler. Wikipedia: "According to Robert Hofler's 2005 biography, The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson: The Pretty Boys and Dirty Deals of Henry Willson, agent Willson saw Saxon's picture on the cover of a detective magazine and immediately contacted the boy's family in Brooklyn. He brought the 18-year-old Orrico to Hollywood and renamed him Saxon."He started his Hollywood career as a juvenile delinquent in Running Wild (Abner Biberman, 1955) starring Mamie van Doren. Thanks to 'hunk' assignments in films like Summer Love (Charles F. Haas, 1958), The Restless Years (Helmut Käutner 1958), and The Reluctant Debutante (Vincente Minnelli, 1958), Saxon was briefly the object of many a teenage crush. Although he worked in these years with many notable directors including Blake Edwards, John Huston, Frank Borzage, and Otto Preminger, he never developed into a major star.

John Saxon is now best known for his work in Westerns like Joe Kidd (John Sturges, 1972) starring Clint Eastwood, and horror films, such as the Italian giallo film, La ragazza che sapeva troppo/The Girl Who Knew Too Much (Mario Bava, 1963) with Leticia Roman, and Queen of Blood (Curtis Harrington, 1966) with Basil Rathbone and Dennis Hopper. Saxon appeared in many Italian films, mainly in Spaghetti Westerns like I tre che sconvolsero il West (Vado, vedo e sparo)/One Dollar Too Many (Enzo G. Castellari, 1968) and such police thrillers as Napoli violenta/Violent Naples (Umberto Lenzi, 1976). He also co-starred with Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly in the classic Hong Kong martial arts action film Enter the Dragon (Robert Clouse, 1973). Another classic genre film is Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) in which he played the heroine's (Nancy Thompson's) father. Hal Erickson at AllMovie: "Fans could watch Saxon's expertise as an actor increase (and his hairline recede) during his three-year (1969-1972) stint as Dr. Ted Stuart on the NBC television series The Bold Ones. He later appeared as a semiregular on the prime-time TV soaper Dallas. In 1988, John Saxon made his directorial debut with the low-budget feature Death House." Saxon can be seen soon in a new Western by Enzo G. Castellari, The Angel, the Brute and the Wise, now in post-production. It has an all-star cast including F. Murray Abraham, Terry Gilliam, Nastassia Kinski, Lou Ferrigno, Michael Madsen, Bud Spencer, Franco Nero, Thomas Milian and even director Dario Argento. John Saxon was married twice. He has one son, Antonio Saxon, with his former wife Mary Ann Saxon. His current wife is Gloria Martel.
