Not sure what happened to the brightness in this, it seems to have faded after I uploaded to Flickr.

Flickr has become impossible to use with VISTA and IE7, I really would like to know why they have such big issues with that combination. Having to switch to Firefox is just plain annoying.

A British Road Services truck squeezes passed workmen from Walsall Corporation’s Transport Department, removing a redundant trolleybus traction pole from Wolverhampton Road at Bentley, Walsall in the late 1960s. Those poles painted a light grey colour in the picture, had been retained for streetlighting purposes, and therefore would last a few more years.

So what had happened to the trolleybus services along this road?

From 16th November 1931 until 31st October 1965, Wolverhampton Corporation, and Walsall Corporation ran a joint trolleybus service between the two towns, the service numbered 29, running successfully until the 1960s. Very few places in Britain ran joint trolleybus routes, so the sight of Walsall’s blue trolleys intermingling with Wolverhampton’s green and yellow trolleys was quite novel.

In 1961, Wolverhampton’s Transport Committee suddenly announced that the Wolverhampton trolleybus system would close, and that trolleybus operation would be gradually phased out subject to the acquisition of replacement motorbuses to be purchased each year until all routes were converted. The committee no doubt being mindful of the Town’s rate-payers who would be funding the conversion.

On the other hand, Walsall Corporation Transport, under the guidance of its famous General Manager Mr R Edgley Cox were enthusiast exponents of the trolleybus, and advocated that the trolleybus service between the two towns continued until at least 1967. However, the coming of the motorway age was upon them, and it was clear that the planned route of the M6 Motorway connecting the Midlands to the Northwest would sever the route at Bentley. Construction of the M6 began in 1963, and by 1965 had reached Bentley, near Walsall. The decision had by then been taken by the powers that be, that trolleybuses would not be allowed to cross over the new motorway, effectively ending any possibility of the through service continuing beyond 1965.

Despite the increasing problems with trolleys getting through the roadworks at what was to become Junction-10 of the M6, operations continued until the constrictions imposed by the construction works finally halted the service, ending 34-years of trolley bus operation along the route.

On this modern day Google aerial view of Bentley, you can see how the M6 Motorway cut through the Wolverhampton Road at this location:

I know you all must be tired of viewing my, "New World" series so here is something different.

This photo manipulation is in thought of, Rene Magritte who is a, Belgian surreal painter.

His paintings are very intriguing and such a mystery, that I was so inspired to create this image I had in mind for a long time.

......so this is my combination version of both his work, "The Secret Double". and "Son of Man".

what do you think?

I am indeed, greatly influenced by his artwork. If you have not heard of him, you must google his work, I'm telling you, you'd be very much captivated, as I was.

This was such a fun project -- this is what users of Internet Explorer 6 see when they visit Momentile.

You can see sketches and a bit of the process on my website.

Simply stunning architecture. We didn't get that much time to really explore as I didn't want to miss the outside at dusk, and there's so many angles just outside. Have to go back for another play.

I appreciate everyones comments on my new portfolio site. I'm making a few design tweaks to fix IE7 bugs and well the navigation is too long for some resolutions so I'm fixing that too.

the impetus for this picture came out of the virtual discussion below that occurred on another 365day flickr

since i have more to say on the matter

and since i don't want to rant in someone else's space

i decided to address it here

and (no pun intended)

dress for it here

(see below)

original exchange:

he:

Rant # whatever: What is the deal with all of these creepy guys on Flickr? I go to so many girls' Flickrs and see some of the grossest, most obscene comments ever. You wouldn't talk to these ladies like this in real life so why on Earth do it here? It's repulsive, it's disgusting, these guys need to be taken out behind the shed and put out of their misery. BUT you girls certainly don't help by encouraging these losers. If you stop posting half-naked pictures of yourselves then these types of people would go away. It's that easy. Now I know you feel empowered by showing off your photoshop-enhanced body on Flickr but is it really worth it? There's a fine line between artful nudes and pornography and most of you are straddling it. Pun intended. Thank you and good night.

me:

f*** art

this project is about a very public form of self reflection

that we all

(for one reason or another)

have chosen to partake in

no one is demanding the "art" label for any other genre of sp

so why for the ones involving nudity???

as far as the comments go

A

rude comments are rude comments, saying they are deserved on a crappy nude photo but not on a crappy clothed photo is like telling the rape victim "well, you must have been asking for it"

and

B

if the protestations by these photographers about rude comments on their photostream bother you so much, then just stop clicking on those images, after all, i am sure you can tell a t&a shot from its thumbnail

basically i believe that however someone approaches this project is valid and courageous

he:

what in the hell are you even talking about? i think you took my rant and twisted and turned it into something completely different. comparing anything on here to rape is ignorant.

he:

and i'm not done. you show me a picture of a girl wearing a sweater, ear muffs, a parka, and a scarf on and see how many perverted comments she gets. take the clothes away and see how it changes. i think that rude comments suck no matter what the context is HOWEVERRRR i believe that there are moments, people, uploads that are seemingly "asking for it" flickr is a car wreck. i couldn't look away even if i wanted to. not that i look at car wrecks. i'm sure you'd like to twist that phrase around to make it sound like i like car wrecks. i'm not gonna fall for it again, sister!

how i really feel

the rape thing: rape in the physical world is abuse of a sexual nature, in the virtual world, gross obscene comments are abuse of a sexual nature, so while not 100% analogous, it's a reasonable metaphor to make.

anyway it's EXACTLY that "asking for it" attitude that i am objecting to and which i am surprised to encounter in this context, i find it to be a very misogynistic way of thinking. and i will say that i was really amazed at the number of women that came out in support of this viewpoint, back in the day that never would have happened.

flickr is a car wreck: not exactly sure about this metaphor, flickr is not something you happen upon, it is something you willingly look at, for what ever reason. some people click on cuddly cats, some on a beautiful balance of light and design, others on t&a, it's pretty simple and pretty easy not to look at things that don't interest you and very easy not to read other people's comments. i am not quite sure what the problem is here that a little self control wouldn't remedy.

about the suggested attire

I am wearing earmuffs but the only ones i have are 180s which make them hard to see hidden in my gorgeous locks, rest assured, they are a color coordinated green .

ok, not my locks - it's a wig; the only thing i am wearing that wasn't requested, but i was having a bad hair day and what with trying to be tasteful and all, it was just too much to get my hair looking even somewhat attractive.

i did substitute a vest for a parka since the color was better and i wanted to give my sweater a little more light

(if you know me at all, you know color always rulz)

oh, and the pillow, that's so there's no mistaking that this is Art

now, attire aside (surprisingly no suggestions for the bottom half) had i chosen to spread my legs, i am sure rude comments would abound so i hardly think clothing or lack there of is germaine.

the point is, if one express's themself by posing suggestively but lacks the where-with-all for meeting some yet to be defined standard of "artful" should they be disrespected for protesting the lewd comments they attract?

art & good taste: as my very wise brother in-law; the multi-talented flawless sabrina says: "good taste is what tastes good"

hey, i'm an artist, i have struggled with the "what is/what isn't" art question for years but my views are simply my views. and i guess, given that what i post can be deeply personal, i feel it is important to respect what other people post.

i think everyone here is trying to show the world what is important to them through the visual and it's ALL valid, the stupid kittens (i make people suffer through mine), the pretty sunsets, the conceptual explorations and yes, the crude and the lewd. honestly, i have learned from all of it.

and i think this standard of "tasteful nudity" is a farce,

cleavage: yes | nipples: no

covered bush: yes | spread legs: no

curve of the ass: yes | hairy balls: no

give me a break, it's just a matter of personal limitations, but there are many, many people posting very seductive images in varying degrees of undress and who's to say what's "artistic" and what's not,

i mean really, seen any terry richardson lately?

as the old joke goes: "madame, we've already established what you are, now we are just haggling about the price"

curious about this person, i went to their profile, which led to their myspace:

"wishes someone would go ahead and knock Miley Cyrus up so we can get her out of the way and move onto the next 13 year old whorish child actress."

i rest my case

almost forgot, let's see what happens when you take the clothes away

GLOBAL WARMING HOAX EXPOSED BY CLIMATEGATE IN 2009. B3

Global Warming Hoax Exposed by Climategate, 2009, color poster series

www.climategate.com/

=============================================

EXAMPLE OF SHINNING INTELLECT: My experience as a missionary teacher in Africa opened my eyes to this simple fact: Without access to energy, life is brutal and short. The uncertain impacts of global warming far in the future must be weighed against disasters at our doorsteps today. Bjorn Lomborg's Copenhagen Consensus 2004, a cost-benefit analysis of health issues by leading economists (including three Nobelists), calculated that spending on health issues such as micronutrients for children, HIV/AIDS and water purification has benefits 50 to 200 times those of attempting to marginally limit "global warming."

Dr. John R. Christy, Nobel Peace Prize, United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

=============================================

TRUTH, FACTS AND REALITY: GLOBAL WARMING IS A NASTY LIE:

Nine Lies About Global Warming

Lie #1. Carbon dioxide is a pollutant.

Lie #2. The twentieth century has been the hottest in recorded history and the decade 1990–2000 the hottest ever.

Lie #3. The evidence linking anthropogenic (man-made) carbon dioxide emissions and current warming is decisive.

Lie #4. The scientific consensus is that anthropogenic CO2 emissions have already caused significant global warming and must be severely curtailed to prevent future climate catastrophe.

Lie #5. Anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and the global warming caused thereby are responsible not only for higher temperatures and more droughts than in the past, but also for more blizzards, unseasonal snow, and freezing weather. They are also responsible for increasing numbers of cyclones.

Lie #6. Because of anthropogenic emissions, the polar ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising. The rising sea levels threaten low lying island states in the Pacific and Indian Oceans with complete inundation.

Lie #7. Unless anthropogenic emissions of CO2 are reduced by 50–60 per cent of current levels by the year 2050, by 2100 our descendants will have to endure global temperatures of between 1.4 to 5.8°C warmer than the present.

Lie #8. Tropical diseases such as malaria and dengue fever will spread from the tropics to the temperate regions.

Lie #9. Shutting down coal-fired power stations and replacing them with renewable energy sources such as windmills and solar panels (or even nuclear power plants) will not cause unemployment or economic deprivation.

============================================

EXAMPLE OF SHINNING INTELLECT AND COMPASSION:

My Nobel Moment By JOHN R. CHRISTY (November 1, 2007)

I've had a lot of fun recently with my tiny (and unofficial) slice of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). But, though I was one of thousands of IPCC participants, I don't think I will add "0.0001 Nobel Laureate" to my resume.

The other half of the prize was awarded to former Vice President Al Gore, whose carbon footprint would stomp my neighborhood flat. But that's another story. Large icebergs in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Winter sea ice around the continent set a record maximum last month.

Both halves of the award honor promoting the message that Earth's temperature is rising due to human-based emissions of greenhouse gases. The Nobel committee praises Mr. Gore and the IPCC for alerting us to a potential catastrophe and for spurring us to a carbonless economy.

I'm sure the majority (but not all) of my IPCC colleagues cringe when I say this, but I see neither the developing catastrophe nor the smoking gun proving that human activity is to blame for most of the warming we see. Rather, I see a reliance on climate models (useful but never "proof") and the coincidence that changes in carbon dioxide and global temperatures have loose similarity over time.

There are some of us who remain so humbled by the task of measuring and understanding the extraordinarily complex climate system that we are skeptical of our ability to know what it is doing and why. As we build climate data sets from scratch and look into the guts of the climate system, however, we don't find the alarmist theory matching observations. (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite data we analyze at the University of Alabama in Huntsville does show modest warming -- around 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit per century, if current warming trends of 0.25 degrees per decade continue.)

It is my turn to cringe when I hear overstated-confidence from those who describe the projected evolution of global weather patterns over the next 100 years, especially when I consider how difficult it is to accurately predict that system's behavior over the next five days.

Mother Nature simply operates at a level of complexity that is, at this point, beyond the mastery of mere mortals (such as scientists) and the tools available to us. As my high-school physics teacher admonished us in those we-shall-conquer-the-world-with-a-slide-rule days, "Begin all of your scientific pronouncements with 'At our present level of ignorance, we think we know . . .'"

I haven't seen that type of climate humility lately. Rather I see jump-to-conclusions advocates and, unfortunately, some scientists who see in every weather anomaly the specter of a global-warming apocalypse. Explaining each successive phenomenon as a result of human action gives them comfort and an easy answer.

Others of us scratch our heads and try to understand the real causes behind what we see. We discount the possibility that everything is caused by human actions, because everything we've seen the climate do has happened before. Sea levels rise and fall continually. The Arctic ice cap has shrunk before. One millennium there are hippos swimming in the Thames, and a geological blink later there is an ice bridge linking Asia and North America.

One of the challenges in studying global climate is keeping a global perspective, especially when much of the research focuses on data gathered from spots around the globe. Often observations from one region get more attention than equally valid data from another.

The recent CNN report "Planet in Peril," for instance, spent considerable time discussing shrinking Arctic sea ice cover. CNN did not note that winter sea ice around Antarctica last month set a record maximum (yes, maximum) for coverage since aerial measurements started.

Then there is the challenge of translating global trends to local climate. For instance, hasn't global warming led to the five-year drought and fires in the U.S. Southwest?

Not necessarily.

There has been a drought, but it would be a stretch to link this drought to carbon dioxide. If you look at the 1,000-year climate record for the western U.S. you will see not five-year but 50-year-long droughts. The 12th and 13th centuries were particularly dry. The inconvenient truth is that the last century has been fairly benign in the American West. A return to the region's long-term "normal" climate would present huge challenges for urban planners.

Without a doubt, atmospheric carbon dioxide is increasing due primarily to carbon-based energy production (with its undisputed benefits to humanity) and many people ardently believe we must "do something" about its alleged consequence, global warming. This might seem like a legitimate concern given the potential disasters that are announced almost daily, so I've looked at a couple of ways in which humans might reduce CO2 emissions and their impact on temperatures.

California and some Northeastern states have decided to force their residents to buy cars that average 43 miles-per-gallon within the next decade. Even if you applied this law to the entire world, the net effect would reduce projected warming by about 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, an amount so minuscule as to be undetectable. Global temperatures vary more than that from day to day.

Suppose you are very serious about making a dent in carbon emissions and could replace about 10% of the world's energy sources with non-CO2-emitting nuclear power by 2020 -- roughly equivalent to halving U.S. emissions. Based on IPCC-like projections, the required 1,000 new nuclear power plants would slow the warming by about 0.2 ?176 degrees Fahrenheit per century. It's a dent.

But what is the economic and human price, and what is it worth given the scientific uncertainty?

My experience as a missionary teacher in Africa opened my eyes to this simple fact: Without access to energy, life is brutal and short.

Given the scientific uncertainty and our relative impotence regarding climate change, the moral imperative here seems clear to me.

===========================================

The "Man-made Global Cooling" and "Man-made Ice Age" to come in the very near future, caused by the Man-made CO2, will destroy all the humanity --- This was the topics of many science magazines first published in the United States and quickly spread around the world, and it even reached Japan's schools' classrooms in 1970s, when Dr. Takeshi Yamada was a child. It was the time of the disastrous economical policies of the President Jimmy Carter --- it was called "Oil Shock" in Japan. (American economists even invented "Misery Index" to measure the devastating economy conditions then).Young Yamada rejected such idea STUPID because 1) we can not tell weather of 7 days from now or 1,000 years from now. 2) CO2 is a food of plants and not poison. 3) Volcanos all over Japan actually produce more toxic air in a day than all the Japanese "air-polluting"companies combined in many decades.

It is just stupid that those doomsday cult members and their children are now screaming that we are now causing the Global Warming, that will destroy all the humanity --- as if they never screamed the opposite in just 30 years ago! These people are all suffering by serious mental disorders and mental diseases. Dr. Takeshi Yamada, today, declairs that those mental disorders and mental diseases are caused by the LEFTWING COCKROACH, one of the most destructive and humanity-destroying killer Yōkai today in the United States and infected other nations.

The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition which opened in London and around Britain in May 1951. The official opening was on the 3rd May. The principal exhibition site was on the South Bank Site, London of the River Thames near Waterloo Station. Other exhibitions were held in Poplar, East London (Architecture), South Kensington (Science) and the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow (Industrial Power) as well as travelling exhibitions that toured Britain by land and sea. Outside London major festivals took place in Cardiff, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Perth, Bournemouth, York, Aldeburgh, Inverness, Cheltenham, Oxford and other centres.

At that time, shortly after the end of World War II, much of London was still in ruins and redevelopment was badly needed. The Festival was an attempt to give Britons a feeling of recovery and progress and to promote better-quality design in the rebuilding of British towns and cities following the war. The Festival also celebrated the centenary of the 1851 Great Exhibition. It was the brainchild of Gerald Barry and the Labour Deputy Leader Herbert Morrison who described it as "A Tonic for the Nation".

I think that it's nice to have pictures of buses out of town, as well as in Town. Seeing this Guy Arab motorbus loading in the centre of Chester, I jumped aboard (well, I could then, I was younger), and off I went on my merry way to the East side of the City. The bus had been destinated Grove Lane, but terminated here in Green Lane at Vicars Cross. Looking at the modern day Google map, I can see that it's near to the junction of Grove Lane.

Although you can just make him out in the cab, I recall the driver being fairly young, but he was very good at driving the bus and didn't seem to struggle with its manual gearbox as some driver's did. The conductress, was a rather plain, but talkative lady probably in her late 30s or early 40's? She had an Ulimate ticket machine, polished by constant use, and issued tickets from it almost without having to look down at the machine. It was great to see, and reminded of Wolverhampton's bus conductors and conductresses, who also used their Ultimate ticket machines in a very similar fashion; that was until WMPTE did away with the last conductor operated routes in 1980.

Anyway, I just had time to nip off the bus to take a couple of pictures, before setting back for the City centre. I'm almost sure that the conductress let me off having to pay the return journey.

Photo: 22nd April 1981.

Lyrics by Genesis. Listen to the song if you have never heard it. It is one of those songs that changes your life.

The only minute or two that the moon shone through that morning...

Also I noticed that if you're using Firefox 3.1 beta 1 this image is significantly darker than the other browsers (IE7, Chrome, etc).

I'm having trouble seeing everyones photos - I can sometimes see some and sometimes none. This has been happening for a couple days. I tried to get help through the forums but no luck. It's only happening with Flickr pictures and all other sites are fine. I'm stumped. I wish I could fix this so I can see and comment on my contacts photos.....

Well I switched back to Firefox from IE7 and it seems to be working fine now. Will do my best to catch up tomorrow!

Explore # 269 ! 27-10-'08 ! Another Place consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometers of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea !

The " Another Place " figures - each one 2m high and weighing 650 kilos - are made from casts of the artist's own body and are shown at different stages of rising out of the sand, all of them looking out to sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectation.

The work is seen as a poetic response to the individual and universal sentiments associated with emigration - sadness at leaving, but the hope of a new future in another place ! Some also see it as a response to the role of the port of Liverpool in the Slave trade !

For other photo's ~ images.google.com/images?q=another+place&rls=com.micr...

if you don't have safari or windows vista with IE7 you wont see the true colors of this picture. fuck firefox for having shitty color management and fuck windows xp for the same reason. thank you

Testing Mr Clayson's wonderful IE CSS discovery, with some quick changes.

All browsers get the basic version. IE7 and modern browsers get the full CSS after that, but IE6 gets it's own special stylesheet (above).

Help

In IE7 the site's main page images are washed out. Fine in Firefox 3 and Safari 4. If you know why, holler.

Some random observations...

1) Flickr is not very kind to converted RAW photo uploads.

2) Pictures look completely different depending on the browser I use. For example, this shot has significantly more contrast in safari than firefox. On my work PC, shots look significantly nicer in firefox than IE7, however. Hmmm.

3) I love my new XTi... I'm shooting everything in sight. I like the smaller f/1.80 50 a LOT more than my f/3.5-5.6 28-135 right now. Even though the latter is much more versatile, the former is lighter, faster and seems to take a better photo in general, although that may just be my biased imagination at this point...

It's getting more and more difficult for me to even contemplate taking a conventional picture of a bus these days. ;-)

National Express West Midlands, MCW Metrobus 2550 (POG550Y) captured crossing the A5 at Newtown, near Brownhills, South Staffordshire on Friday 29th May 2009.

This will be their last summer in service with NXWM, so if you want to photograph and/or ride on these 20-26 year old veterans, you really need to act now.

Where, are we? We're here:

maps.google.com/maps?q=newtown+brownhills&oe=UTF-8&am...

A busy scene on Pershore Road, Cotteridge, Birmingham on 3rd April 1982. WMPTE Metrobus 2306 heads a Bedford CA van and a Leyland Sherpa van passed a host of contemporary cars and shop fronts, as the Perry Barr based bus makes it way around the No11C Outer Circle route. No long after, 2306 was involved in a serious collision while operating on the 91N night serivce.

View it large if you're able to, and take it all in: pure early '80s nostalgia.

We are here:

maps.google.com/maps?q=Cotteridge,+Hockley+Heath,+Birming...

Upgrading to the new version of YUI3 (and doing nothing else) took almost a second off of our page complete time. The improvement came entirely from IE and Firefox (Safari and Chrome were already super fast):

- IE7: From an average of 4.5 seconds to 3.0 seconds

- IE8: From an average of 3.4 seconds to 2.2 seconds

- Firefox 3.5/3.6: From an average of 2.8 seconds to 2.2 seconds

Just started a new job as a software tester, it's such a blessing for me to have a full time job again.

The stuff I test is mainly facebook pages for companies, so I switch between IE7, IE8, Firefox 3.6, and Chrome to verify compatibility and uniqueness under XP, Vista, and occaisionally Win7.

I have two monitors, but I haven't gotten a new machine with a GPU capable of outputting dual

displays yet.

Running XP with Vista through Virtual Box in seamless mode.

In this painting, I used only one photo for reference. I usually use two or more. I wanted to get a sense of one coherent abstract head by putting together a multitude of individually observed pieces of information over time. This one evolved over eight hours.

Looking at it now, I'm reminded of certain toys I had as a child which were intended to give manual dexterity. One was Bill Ding and another favorite were Lincoln Logs -- a precursor of Lego.

I also was an an avid enthusiast of anatomy in high school and early college days. I had thought I wanted to be a surgeon, but those plans changed after I slacked off in sciences and took an interest in drawing and painting. I enjoyed studying art anatomy with a fine professor at UCLA, Jan Stuessy. Jan's teaching and work showed a devotion to the inexplicable harmonies of the human body -- how it is assembled and how it moves. His remarkable paintings also taught me that applied anatomy in art can also have an aesthetic beauty in and of itself in spite of all the clichéd academic endeavors to drain it of its vigor.

Of course, my strong affinity for the Cubist discoveries of Braque and Picasso persist -- as well as admiration for later satellite adherents to Cubism as Gleizes, Metzinger and later Duchamp and his brothers. Italian Futurists such as Severini and Boccioni also figure into the mix. Russian Suprematist Malevich, Russian painter Llubov Popova and Swiss Constructivist Kurt Schwitters are definite guideposts in my abstract work.
