Day 7 : "Beginings"

-----

The Beginnings of Life...

-----

Coot with 1 of her babies...

I spotted 3.

And when she lifted herself slightly to let her 2 other little ones out, I could see another egg (Maybe there are still others...).

When I see this nest (and all the others for that matter), I say to myself: "What a job!"

But also: "What wonderful architects birds are!"

*****

*******************************************************************

My very first butterfly 2020, a small experiment which lasted 4 months, in mid September I recovered a swallowtail caterpillar with the hope of being able to observe the metamorphosis cycle, I fed this caterpillar for two weeks with fennel, it quickly turned into a chrysalis well attached to its small stem and this Sunday I had the pleasant surprise to see the imago fresh out of its cocoon, small photo shoot requires before giving it back its well-deserved freedom .

PS: any request to share with a group will be rejected immediately, I do not want any publicity on my work (I have largely passed the age to receive Oscars, Good Points and other nonsense of this kind .... ) , thank you for your understanding .

almost no clouds in the sky, almost no wind, clear winter air, the best conditions for reflections, I thought ... and once again drove to Castle Dyck.

My expectations were not disappointed!

I think I'll hike to a lake, she said. Not today, the wind said.

Recently in some comments, I was conversing with a wonderful Flickr friend about following one's heart while hiking rather than sticking to a rigid plan. My Stevens Pass hike ended up being very much about that.

My original hiking plan was to continue along the PCT to an alpine lake a few miles further down the trail. However as I reached the top of Saddle Ridge, where I took the photos I posted previously, and wandered off to the left of the main trail for more photo opportunities, I noticed a faint bootpath heading up a steep hill to my left. (Photo of the hill is in the first comment below.) For some reason I felt pulled to follow the path further along the ridge toward that hill, and started climbing up the steep and rocky slope, with no idea of what I would find at the top, other than perhaps some additional mountain views.

The top of the hill didn't seem too far away, so I thought it would be a brief detour, despite the slippery footing and challenging grade. However, when I got to the apex of the hill, I realized it was not, in fact, the top of the climb. That there was another equally steep slope behind it. And as I was to learn, yet another behind that. But my heart said to keep climbing. So I did. Until eventually the ascent ended and I was standing on the summit of what I would later figure out was Big Chief Mountain, at just under 6000 feet (1828 meters) elevation.

The higher I climbed, the better the views got, with mountain ranges visible in every direction. And as I stopped at this particular spot and looked back toward the south, I could even see the snowcapped top of Tahoma (Mount Rainier) just peeking out from behind the rows of mountains in front of it.

Awaiting at the summit were even more spectacular views, as far north as Mount Baker and Glacier Peak in the North Cascades. Surrounded by mountains as far as the eye could see, and taking in these extraordinary views in complete solitude was an incredible surprise and well worth the climb. I never made it to the lake that day, but the joy I found in those extraordinary moments at the top of that peak was the true gift of the day.
