While I explored Le Sixième Sens, I came cross this lovely place to stop and rest my pixels upon a high cliff.

It was lovely up there. The sound of the surf hitting the shore below, the gulls flying overhead making themselves heard and the strong breeze coming off the sea was just perfect.

It was just then that I started to think about where I was on the grid.....Le Sixième Sens....such a wonderful place, but what does the name mean?? If was time to go back to my days in French class...Le Sixième--The Sixth. Sens--Sense. The Sixth Sense!

Just then I started to hear voices, but I was alone! I checked the map, not a green dot in sight. I kept hearing the voices though....Was I losing my mind? Clear as day I heard a male voice speaking to a female. They sounded like they were good friends just relaxing. What was going on?!?! Was I in touch with my SIXTH SENSE?

Then I saw something out of the corner of my eye.....PEOPLE! They had been sitting on a swing on the other side of the cliff. Local voices on. So much for my sixth sense. (I need a new map too.....unless I was seeing DEAD PEOPLE! They wouldn't leave a green dot on my map, like these folks....right?!)

The Milky Way arches over the abandoned church in Dunlewy, Co. Donegal during an exceptionally clear night sky in late September 2020. This is a composite of 46 individual frames of the night sky and one single image image for the church. A 35mm lens was used for the night sky frames with a 1 minute exposure at F2.0 and ISO 800. The astrotracer function on the Pentax K1 rotates the camera sensor to compensate for the Earth's rotation; without the astrotracer other cameras would only allow for an exposure of up to 15 seconds before the stars become blurred by the Earth's rotation. Other cameras would also have to boost the ISO to compensate for the shorter exposure and result in noisier images.

The final mosaic of the 46 frames is about 30,728 by 21,189 pixels in dimensions; equivalent to a single 651 million pixel image! Social media doesn't do justice to such a high resolution image.

To the left of the church spire is Mars. The bright feature above Mars is the Andromeda galaxy, one of our nearest neighbour galaxies and is about 3 million light years away. To the left of Mars, in area of orange light pollution, is the cluster of stars called Pleiades in the constellation of Taurus. Also known as the Seven Sisters; although there are more than seven stars!. The Pleiades cluster is relatively close to us at 390 light years distance. The two bright dots above Pleiades and to the left of Andromeda are the double cluster of stars in Perseus; each cluster contains about 300 individual stars. The purple area roughly in centre left of the Milky Way is the North America Nebula in Cygnus (2,500 light year away). The pink-red spot in the lower right part of the Milky Way is the Lagoon nebula in Sagittarius which is 6,000 light years away.

These medieval structures, dotting the fileds and olive plantations, are a landmark of Southern Italy. They are called "furnieddhu" and were built in the dry wall technique typical for the zone. Farmers used them as shelters and to store their harvest.

During my August visit in the Salento region of Italy, I went to this furnieddhu, because it lines up perfectly with the vertical Milky Way and stands in a relatively dark part of this heavily light polluted region. What I did not know, was that a very popular open air discotheque is located on the other side of the road and bathing the structure with bright LED lights.

Sometimes, you have to bow with the blow... I adapted my low level lighting and used the headlights of passing cars to match the brightness of the discotheques flood lights and to avoid harsh shadows and highlights on the walls.

Fortunately nor the brightly lit foreground, nor the loud music affected the sky quality.

This image shows one of the coastal watchtowers that are dotting the perimeter of the Salento Peninsula (southern Apulia, Italy). Most of these towers were built in the 15th and 16th. century to create an “early warning system” against pirate attacks. Many of these towers are now in very poor conditions, which despite beeing a pitty, is a blessing for night photography, as this means that most of them are unlighted at night.

I just reurned back home from a two week vacation in the Salento. Staying 1000 miles away from my computer and without a stable internet connection guaranteed a relaxing time. Of course I nevertheless took my camera along and tried a few nightscapes, despite the rather fierce light pollution plaguing the region.

I took this image during a short trip to the same region in 2018, as I have not yet found the time to download the images from my current stay.

The coastline of southern Italy is dotted with medieval watch towers that provide picturesque photo opportunities. Unfortunately, many regions of Italy are also extremely light polluted. That's why many of these beautiful structures are not suitable for Milky Way nightscapes and most of the others can only be captured facing the darker sea. This makes them only available during certain times of the year, when the Milky Way is in a favorable position.

I captured this tower in August. The alignment of the Milky Way was already past its optimum, and the region below the core drowned in light pollution. On the other hand, the artificial light helped to give structure to the landscape and tower and I only needed to add a small LED light in the doorway for a pleasing result.

I spotted this fish in an aquarium. I know nothing of its species. The markings on its body reminded me of a satellite view of our planet. I photographed him, then in Xara Designer Pro XI I placed some starlike dots in the dark space surrounding him and so Planet Fish was born. Silly I know but sometimes silly feels good. Finished in Photoshop with a quick and faint lens vignette. Original Exif destroyed by processing but pasted here:

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

Shorebirds of Ireland, Freshwater Birds of Ireland and The Birds of Ireland: A Field Guide with Jim Wilson.

www.markcarmodyphotography.com

The Seven-Spot Ladybug (Coccinella septempunctata), family Coccinellidae, is one of about 5,000 species of ladybirds in the world. Most species come on a pretty basic chassis with a variety of dots and dashes against a background that varies from yellow to pink to red to black, sometimes within the same species.

At 7 to 10 mm long the Seven-spot is one of our larger ladybugs. It has seven spots distributed over its elytra (hard wing covers). The number of spots can be diagnostic in ladybug species, except when it’s not.

There are two white spots on the face, and its thorax is mostly black, with the head framed by two white “squares.” The large, black spot at the front of the elytra is bordered by a white “bowtie.”

They are widely distributed in Ireland.

This was taken in a hedgerow along the Wicklow coast.

Back on July, 2, 2013, I was given a heads up that NS' CNJ heritage unit would be coming into California for the first time, at around 2AM, but wouldn't make the trip into the Los Angeles basin. So I made the 2 hour trip to Barstow from home to hopefully get a somewhat decent shot, if the conditions were right. Unfortunately, around this same time, I had already noticed dead pixels (white dots in photo) when I'd taken previous night shots and knew the photos would suffer because of this, and was already setting money aside to buy another body; but hey, it's a NS heritage unit so off I went anyway.

With the shimmering lights of Barstow off in the distance, the conductor on the wb manifest gives a speeding intermodal a roll-by while waiting for Barstow yard to make room for their train.

Print size 4' x 11'.

Stacked and stitched using pixel shift on the Panasonic G9.

There was another moth but it walked off, pretty hit and miss with live subjects but sometimes it works out.

Explanation: A bright spiral galaxy of the northern sky, Messier 63 is about 25 million light-years distant in the loyal constellation Canes Venatici. Also cataloged as NGC 5055, the majestic island universe is nearly 100,000 light-years across, about the size of our own Milky Way. Known by the popular moniker, The Sunflower Galaxy, M63 sports a bright yellowish core and sweeping blue spiral arms, streaked with cosmic dust lanes and dotted with pink star forming regions. This deep exposure also reveals an enormous but dim arc extending far into the halo above the brighter galactic plane. A collaboration of professional and amateur astronomers has shown the arc to be consistent with the stellar stream from a smaller satellite galaxy, tidally disrupted as it merged with M63 during the last 5 billion years. Their discovery is part of an increasing body of evidence that the growth of large spirals by cannibalizing smaller galaxies is commonplace in the nearby Universe. Early summer is the best time in the mountains, because the alpine meadows explode with colorful flowers. My favorite is the Rhododendron ferrugineum. It is sometimes aptly called snow-rose or by its German name alpenrose, as it produces clusters of pinkish-red, bell-shaped flowers.

Thousands of such colorful dots sprinkling a whole mountain side are a sight to behold, especially when they are seemingly mirrored by millions of twinkling stars in the night sky. What do you need more for paradise? A calm mountain lake, a cozy camp fire and a shooting star?

No problem: Welcome to Switzerland!

Ok, the shooting star is a flash of a manmade Iridium satellite, but it fits the cliché.

"Red Spotted Purple Butterfly" by Debbie Oppermann. What a lovely Red Spotted Purple butterfly, Limentis arthemis, sipping on the nectar of the pink Buddleia bloom, in summer in Guelph, Ontario Canada. Mostly a black butterfly with iridescent blue, white and red spots on wings, it is frequently mistaken for a White Admiral which is from the same family.

Minimalism is a very subjective concept in the art world ... The Webster dictionary defines it as " ... a style or technique that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity ... ".

Some love it, others hate it, but no one seems to be totally indifferent against the general idea that minimalism represents. Many artists thrive in the openness of the concept, others have a problem with the lack of definition and direction. Many of us are drawn to ‘less is more’ with simple lines, geometric patterns, strong shadows, contrasting colors, lone subjects, etc. For others, deciding what to leave out of the frame to make a stronger image is a difficult exercise.

In my personal opinion minimalistic approach to photography combines two technical things ... Frame tranquility (derived usually from long exposure softness results) and few items in sight, whose loneliness actually delineates and overemphasizes them, makes them more important ...

The above scene was taken a few days ago, long before sunrise ...

This hyperlink exhibits a few more minimal attempts of mine through FLUIDR !!!!

There is a bonus object in the distance, a roe deer eating straw or grass or something. It was so dark that I couldn't see it when I took the photo. In this Flickr version it's only a pixel dot but in the original it can be seen clearly. It could had been polar bear or wolf or whatever, I think, it's exciting:)

Three miles east of Aberfoyle in the heart of the Trossachs is the Lake of Menteith, a regular feature in Scottish trivia quizzes as the answer to the question "What's the only lake in Scotland?" It is arguable that the correct answer to that question is that there are no lakes in Scotland: there just happens to be a loch called "The Lake of Menteith".

You can catch a small ferry from the Historic Scotland Pier for a seven minute trip to the island of Inchmahome, to visit Inchmahome Priory. You are unlikely to be alone on the lake: it is common to find it dotted with small green motor boats occupied by fishermen in tweeds and Barbour jackets.

El Capitan is in the background on the left. Bridalveil Meadow is in the center of the picture.

El Capitan rises nearly 3600 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. One of the largest exposed pieces of granite in the world, this behemoth attracts rock climbers from around the world. Everyone seeing Yosemite Valley for the first time is truly amazed at the enormous size of El Capitan as it dwarfs everything in its vicinity. But to be ready to gain a sense of scale, do not forget to bring your binoculars in order to spot the rock climbers. They appear as dots, tiny dots, moving along El Capitan's seemingly sheer surface.

The picture was taken from a stop called Valley View. In a park where I had several favorite places, this was perhaps my favorite stop of all. There are so very many ways to frame the image over the river and Bridalveil Meadow . . .
