I had intended on going to Newhaven to shoot the waves crashing over the breakwater, but instead I diverted to Brighton.
Glad I did as the waves were good. but not large enough to have been impressive at the breakwater.
The conditions were on the tail end of storm "Doris" (who ever named it this needs shooting).
And gave for some fun times dodging the waves. (Was got twice..Tripod was nearly lost at sea).
Enjoy.
Comments welcome.

This widespread Central American butterfly has the most peculiar name of Doris Longwing (Laparus doris). The name Doris hasn't been in vogue since the singer Doris Day but it is a name straight from classical mythology. Doris was a sea-goddess in Greek mythology, mother of the Nereids. It was originally thought to be in the Heliconius genus but was found to have a different number of chromosomes. It is a highly variable butterfly in that the hindwings can be patterned red, green or blue. Moreover a single female can apparently give rise to all three colour forms but this must surely be from multiple matings. This is the blue-winged form by the way. The caterpillars feed on Passion-flower and like Bumblebees they feed on both nectar and pollen, the pollen helping them live longer than if they fed on nectar alone. I photographed this individual at Corcovado in Costa Rica.

As the tail edge of Storm Doris passes the south coast, a few breaking waves on the Cobb at Lyme Regis are watched by families on half term
High tide at Porthcawl during storm Doris. Unfortunately the wind had died down somewhat by the time high tide came around. Still didn't deter the many photographers that had gathered! There were many waves larger than this but my camera seemed to take forever processing my bursts. I think a new memory card is on the cards!
Doris Longwing (or Doris Butterfly or Rayed Longwing)
Scientific Name: Heliconius doris
Seen in a climate controlled Butterfly house.
The Doris Longwing or Doris Butterfly (Heliconius doris) is a butterfly of the big tropical Nymphalidae family. This butterfly has long, narrow black wings with vivid blue, red, green or yellow coloration at the base of the dorsal hindwing. Characteristics are the two white spots on the forewing.
The wingspan is 55 to 80 mm. The Doris Longwing is found in the tropical rainforests from Southern Mexico to the Amazon Basin in Brazil and Bolivia between sea level and 1800 m.
This species can live up to 9 months, an extremely long time. The most tropical butterflies normally live only a couple weeks.
This Green Doris Longwing had been taken in the butterfly house Vlindervallei (Butterfly Valley) of the Orchideeënhoeve (Orchid Farm) in Luttelgeest, the Netherlands.

New pet portrait... a little smaller than usual. I quite like drawing at this size, I feel like I am able to get more detail in somehow.
Also... does the cropping look a little uneven to you? I might fix it and re-upload. I have been staring at it for too long so I have no idea.
