MOST of the year red deer live quiet and unobtrusive lives, but for about three weeks in September, in Richmond park London the area echoes to the stags bellowing roars and the clashing of antlers. This is the rutting season, the courting and mating time when the stags move into the areas where the hinds live.

I drove up to Oak Creek Wildlife Area, Naches, Washington today to photograph elk at the feeding station. WDFW started feeding Wednesday after a few hundred elk migrate from the Cascade Mountains due to heavy snow. There are probably 300 elk in the feedlot but many more will likely arrive in the next few days.

Elk are also called wapiti, a Native American word that means “light-colored deer.” Elk are related to deer.

A bull Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) walks near the picnic tables at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Early European settlers in North America called this animal an "elk" which is a word usually used in Europe for a moose. This causes some cofusion among some European visitors. The other name used for elk is wapiti which is a Shawnee word which means "white rumped deer" or "white deer". To make things even more confusing, Cervus elaphus has also been called Cervus canadensis and that name is still in use by some. There are 3 subspecies of elaphus recognized currently in the United States. Of these subspecies, the Rocky Mountain elk have the largest population and the widest distribution.

Foto no crop. Abruzzo - PNALM

Deer. This male, one 15 points and the other more distant, an 18 points, if they are given of right reason, (to notice the wounds along the side assaulted by the flies), in the vain hope that the female in heat, that can be glimpsed lying in front of them, she succumbed to their flattery. Hidden under a camouflage sheet after 2 hours of walking in the mountains with the weight of the photo backpack on the shoulders. No crop photos. Abruzzo - PNALM
