Huntington Beach - Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 1.5 mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing.

Finally getting around to scanning these.

Film from our cross country road trip last summer, this was taken in California.

For some reason no one else was on the beach but us, at least not anyone close enough to see or hear. David and I laid in the sand and watched the seagulls run back and forth from the waves, it was something that I had never seen before; the seagulls would wait for the tide to go out, run down the sand and look for food, then run away from the water as it came back up.

Being near/in the Pacific ocean was so wonderful.

Inspired by Virginia's beautiful poppy pics!

This California Hairstreak was photographed on 5/18/08. The location is at Lake Shasta, in Shasta County, California. They were fairly abundant in multiple locations this day.

By the time my parents and I left Sequoia National Park, the sun was setting. This lake just outside of the park made the perfect view as the sun sank below the horizon.

Carmel Beach, Carmel, California. June 22, 2018.

Captured and imagined at Clear Lake SP in California.

This graphic was created in Corel Draw, which, although it isn't designed for photo editing, allows you to place a photo, or part of one, inside of a shape, such as letters. So I did. As you can, perhaps, see from my comment, below, all of this, except the shape and outline of the letters, came from previously uploaded photos (one by my wife, two by me) of California poppies, Eschscholzia californica. The orange was growing beside a road in Santa Ysabel, the yellow in the Grossmont Shopping Center, and the background in the Rancho San Diego Village shopping center, all in San Diego County, California.

I used Corel Photopaint to cut pieces out of the original photos for insertion in this graphic.

The typeface used for "California" is Scream, a freeware font by Samuel Park. For "poppies," it is Bookman Old Style.

Cheer up (or not) I've got more or these to show you, starting with tomorrow's post, God willing.

Located off the 1,100 miles of California coastline, the California Coastal National Monument comprises more than 20,000 small islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles between Mexico and Oregon.

The California Coastal National Monument is a biological and scenic treasure. Its thousands of islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles are part of the near shore ocean zone, which begins just off shore and ends at the boundary between the continental shelf and continental slope. The Monument, established by presidential proclamation in 2000, provides feeding and nesting habitat for an estimated 200,000 breeding seabirds, as well as forage and breeding habitat for marine mammals including the southern sea otters and California sea lions .

Also might be titled: "La Vie En Rose" or "Looking at life through rose-colored glasses" ;-)

Here I was in the parking of a strip mall wondering what to spend some money on, and then I saw some fluffy, light orange clouds behind palm trees. That's where my sun-glasses came into play and gave the sky a nice purple/pink tint.

Like people say, we always choose and even create what we see.

P.S. I still miss Texas.

California (pronounced i /kælɪˈfɔrnjə/) is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. Nicknamed "The Golden State," it is the most populous[5] and third-largest state by land area, after Alaska and Texas. It is home to the nation's second- and sixth-largest census statistical areas and eight of the nation's 50 most populous cities. Its five largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, and Fresno.[6] California's capital is Sacramento.[7]

California's diverse geography ranges from the Pacific Coast to the west, to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the east, to the Mojave Desert areas in the southeast and to the Redwood–Douglas fir forests of the northwest. The center of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, a major agricultural area. California contains both the highest (Mount Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the contiguous United States. After Florida, California has the second-longest coastline in the contiguous United States, which is approximately 840 miles long. Earthquakes are a common occurrence due to the state's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, with about 37 thousand recorded annually.[8]

Thank you for the information from my Flickr contact Jason Branz.

This is the best Poppy Field I have seen in northern California this year. I finally understand the meaning of "Golden State", when I stood in the sea of this golden poppy.

This salamander is quite poisonous to the touch, with skin that secretes the lethal neurotoxin tetrodotoxin. My mountain biking gloves are now ready to lace some Avatar arrowheads.

California Poppy (Eschscholizia poppy)

California poppies (Eschscholzia californica).

This is the third, and probably last, of my manipulated photos of poppies. The background was a photo of California poppies (Eschscholzia californica), as was the content of both the "California" and the "poppies" letters. Corel Draw has a bitmap effect called "Stained Glass" which I used on the background.

The typeface used for "California" is Scream, a freeware font by Samuel Park. For "poppies," it is Bookman Old Style.

For more on the originals, see the first photo in the series, which is here.
