Summer road trips are great for getting out in the middle of nowhere for sunrise ... and that is just what this was. Took this shot as we were heading into Nevada on our way towards Moab leaving out of the Lake Mono area.
California sure managed to get more than it's fair share of beautiful scenery. A closer look at McWay falls near Big Sur California. This is a single long exposure. This really is a magnificent location. The view, the sound of the waves and the smell of the eucalyptus trees around make for a magical experience. I can't recommend this location highly enough.
Drove up the mountain today for a class with National Geographic photographer, Phil Schermeister. It's the last day of a 3 day class and we were blessed with unseasonably good weather (for photography that is). Yesterday there was an amazing sunset on the Sonora Pass as thunderstorms were occuring in the distance. Early this morning there was a bit of mist and this golden glow of the water. It was a long and tiring weekend, but as usual when spending time with fellow photographers, it was a lot of fun. Now time for a nap.

California is an amazing place. I have vivid memories of my life over there. This particular afternoon in July was really memorable in terms of the light and conditions for photography. A really magical time. The structure is called Natural Bridges in the similar named beach in Santa Cruz. Surprisingly, there is a quite similar rock formation in the North of Chile called La Portada de Antofagasta. I am planning go some day to Antofagasta, and for sure, returning for more magic to Santa Cruz.
Taken along Anderson Valley California. Well known for its many vineyards. About 18 of them in fact. So many opportunities for wine tasting were passed up for photography instead. This can only mean one thing - another return trip!
This is Bodie California. It is the largest ghost town in the U.S. This is a late afternoon shot of part of the town. I will be posting more images of this fabulous place right along. I hope to be giving you more historical information as I post more images.

Beach life in Southern California.
Note that there are several great little things that came together for this photo:
• A lone surfer is exiting the water, with his footprints leading away from the waves, and his reflection below him.
• A group of surfers is floating in the waves behind the surfer in the middleground.
• A flock of Pelicans is drifting along the horizon in formation on the left.
• And of course, the one tiny, elusive patch of seasonal daisies on the entire coastline in this area!
Of course I didn't paint this canvas, God did. I just showed up in exactly the right spot at exactly the right moment to capture all the beauty that was already there to be experienced! And a great moment it was.
I must also of course give a ton of credit to Max Vuong, whose inspirational and award-winning image of this awesome spot inspired me to go there and seek it out in the first place. His work is really excellent and you can check it out right here on Flickr.
Also took a similar shot with my Fuji medium format camera and Kodak Ektar film. Makes for interesting comparison.
The California Thrasher is found only in California and Baja California. It is the only species of Toxostoma throughout most of its limited range. Like most thrashers, it rarely flies in the open, preferring to keep hidden in dense brush. Therefore, while it is common throughout much of its range, it is rarely seen.
