Painted with friend today and I painted these poppies. I'm trying to use negative painting and it's a lot of fun, but I have to really study the painting and step away very often to get what I want.

Though a bit late for Memorial Day, it still seems fitting to post these poppies! We had the opportunity last week for a short visit to two gardens last week - both filled with wonderful poppies. From red to purple, pink, blue and California orange - the poppies were plentiful. Even along the highways of North Carolina, poppies dress the landscape ....

Poppies often represent beauty, magic, consolation, fertility and eternal life. The Egyptians included poppies at funerals and in burial tombs. The flowers were used by the Greeks in the shrines of Demeter and Diana. But more than anything, the red poppy has been associated with Flanders fields as an emblem of those who died in World War I. The tradition of poppies to memorialize our fallen soldiers continues as we remember the sacrifices of the men and women who have kept our country free. May we continue to remember and to honor them ...

I am heartsick with the tragedy of the Boston marathon and my heart and prayers go out to those killed and injured in this senseless event.

Though I painted this a while ago, it seems fitting today to remember those lost and hurt .... we are a people in mourning and bewilderment ....

Prayers for peace......

Seen yesterday during my evening walk at a nearby lake.

She was posing for me so nicely, striped by the last rays

of the sinking sun...

I had to use a large zoom and it looked too coarse to me.

So I decided to use some PSE-effects, trying to get a look

like Pointilism.

I hope, you will like it this way.

Die Ente posierte so nett für mich gestern während eines

Abendspaziergangs am nahegelegenen See.

Retirement has been a busy time for me - a lot to catch up with after 11 years on the road, and I'm thoroughly enjoying my time!!! But sometimes in all this catching up, cleaning, changing, organizing, I long for a bit of timelessness.

It was in such a moment that this photo www.flickr.com/photos/dubonnet/7251639712 stopped me in my tracks, and brought me right to that quiet space of contemplation and dreaminess.

With Sharon's gracious permission, I created this interpretation of Sharon's beautiful plum blossoms. As I painted, I was transported from the heat-filled, sagging heat of summer, to the fresh, new, potentiality-filled moments of spring ... a time both refreshing, and rich with the season''s promises ahead. I used Unryu paper and watercolor to highlight the 'dreaminess' of the image that inspired me. Thank you, Sharon, for your kindness once again. (Please take a moment to visit Sharon's flickr stream to view some awesome work!!)

I spent the day with a friend yesterday making peach jam -- the first jam of the season - and luscious it was! We had a light lunch and hours of wonderful sharing and companionship. Afterwards I returned phone calls and began arrangements for teaching various classes in the fall. I'm excited about this opportunity to share with my 'home' community and begin to build new relationships.

I'll be off-line most of week and weekend as I'm planning to visit my sisters and Mom and computer time will be limited.

Hope your week is wonderful!

With the rain and cold that has also blossomed with spring flowers, it felt like the right time to splash a bit of paint and create a flower abstraction. Though my bouquet of bright sunflowers is now becoming next year's compost, they inspired me to create a somewhat different view of them ... What I love about the creative aspect of splashing large amounts of paint colors, is the resultant 'Rorschach' test of 'finding' flowers' and using negative painting to 'carve' them out of the mass of color and shapeless paint. It's a meditative kind of approach that seems to quiet me while I also have a chance to delight in the possibilities before me. Fun.

Tomorrow is our 8-county area 'Senior Games' ... a time when we 'more mature' adults participate in different activities such as basketball, tennis, arts of all kinds and more. For my first entry into this annual event, I'll merely participate in the Opening Ceremonies and Senior Walk ... but it will be a real delight to see other mature adults taking an active role in their health and well being.

Hope the rest of your week is wonderful!
